LIFTING AND SWING-ING GATE.
Application filed July 17, 1916.
T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD FELTMAN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Ottawa, in the county of Putnam and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting and Swinging Gates, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to fences and more particularly to new and useful improvements in lifting and swinging gates, the primary object of my invention being to provide an improved type of swinging gate having means associated therewith for raising the gate before swinging to permit the same to escape obstructions such as snow and ice in a roadway.
Another object of my invention is to pro vide a gate of the class described which is simple in construction, strong and durable and cheap to manufacture and install.
A further object of my invention is to provide a mechanism of the class described which may be readily applied to various types of gates now in use without materially altering the gate structure.
Other objects and advantages to be derived from the use of my improved lifting and swinging gate will appear from the following detail description and the claim, taken with an inspection of the accompanying drawing, in which:

Fig. 3 is a fragmental end view of the latching mechanism for holding the gate in lifted position.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein similar characters of reference designate like and corres endin arts throughout the various views, 1 and 2 indicate fence posts of the usual type. A gate is designated 3 and is composed of a plural ity of slats f supported by standards 5, 6 and 7. the gate.
The hinge means of my invention includes a plurality of bearing brackets 9, 10 and 11 carried on the post 2, said brackets support ing a vertically arranged bearing rod 12. A plate 13 is bolted as at 14 to the standard 7 of the ate, said plate having loops 15 on its opposite end for engagement with said rod Specification of Letters Patent.

12. The plate 13 and the loops 15 thereof serve as a hinge for the gate, the loops in normal position resting upon the brackets 1.0

The raising mechanism of my invention includes a lever 16 arranged diagonally across the face of the gate 3, said lever being pivoted on a lateral extension 17 of the rod 12, a cotter pin 18 serving to prevent dis placement of said lever. A guiding bracket 19 embraces the lever 16 at a point intermediate its ends, said bracket having apertures 20 in the free ends thereof through which bolts 21 or the like fastening means are adapted to be engaged, said bracket member being mounted on the standard 6 of the gate. The free end of the lever 16 is adapted to engage a ratchet bar 22 carried by the gate, arranged diagonally thereof adjacent the free end of the gate. The lever 16 is recessedas at 23 to more securely engage the teeth of the ratchet bar 22.
A strap 24 is carried by the lever 16, said strap having the free ends thereof spaced as at 25, to receive the hook portion 26 of a lifting rod 27, the lower'end of said rod being formed with a similar hook 28 for engagement with a strap 29, said strap 29 being similar to the strap 24:. It will be seen that when the lever is raised the lifting rod 27 will cause the gate to be raised, the loop 15 sliding on the rod 12. The gate is maintained in raised position by virtue of the engagement of the lever 16 with the ratchet bar 22. Of course, the lever is inherently resilient permitting its disengagement from the ratchet teeth to lower the gate. A conventional form of latch 30 is provided on the post 1, said latch being arranged whereby to lock the late at any point in its vertical movement. The gate is permitted to swing at any point in its vertical movement owing to the slidable and rotatable engagement of the loop 15 with said rod 12. Thus it will be seen that in the provision of my improved gate I have afforded means for raising a gate to escape obstruction and to render more efiicient gates of this class.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, I.
desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I The combination with a gate post having a vertically disposed spaced bar extending parallel therewith, a gate slidably and swingably mounted on said bar, a lever eX- tending diagonally across said gate, one end of said lever being pivotally mounted on the upper end of the vertical bar, a guiding bracket for said lever mounted on the gate and rigidly secured thereto, a strap member carried by the lever intermediate its ends, the free ends of said strap being straight, a second strap carried by the lower edge of the gate,a link member, hook portions formed on the ends of said link, one hook adapted to be received between the straight ends of the first mentioned strap and the opposite hook being adapted to be retained in the second mentioned strap, and means on said gate for retaining the lever in various adjusted positions.
