EXTENSION-TABLE.
Application filed March 16, 1917.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES FAULKNER THoMAs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Faribault, in the county of Rice and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Extension- Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relatesto extension tables and it has particular reference to atable of the type generally known as a library table, the object of the invention being to so construct the same that it may be extended and utilized as a dining table.
A further object of the invention is'to produce an extension table of the type described which will be simple in construction,
- easily manipulated and in which the additional leaf or top member required for extension purposes Wlll be housed below the 1 top of the library table so as to be out of view when the table'is used as a. library illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claimsmay be resorted to when desired. r
In the drawings: 7 Figure l is a top plan view of the table collapsed, portions of the table top and of the auxiliary leaf having been broken away.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the table extended.
Fig. 3 isa sectional view taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 44 in Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3 but show ing the table top slightly tilted preparatory to extending the table.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 19,1918.
Serial No. 155,314.
Fig. 6 is a side view. of the table with parts broken away.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken on the line 7-7 in Fig. 1. I I
Fig. 8 is a detail view in side. elevation illustrating the locking device.
Corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings are denoted by like characters of reference. I
The permanent frame of the improved table which is rectangular in shape includes the side members 15, end members 16. legs 17, and blind end members 18, the latter being connected with the legs by lag screws 19, enabling the frame to be conveniently knocked down for shipping purposes and re assembled when required. There are two movable side members, viz., the drawer front 20 and the false drawer front 21. Two extension slides of well known construction, known as equalizing slides, are provided each of said slides including an inner member 22, an outer member 23, and an intermediate member 24. The extension slides are equipped with the well. known equalizing devices comprising pulleys 25 and wire ropes 26 or with equalizing devices of any convenient and well known construction, whereby when either the inner or the outer slide is projected withrespect to the inter mediate slide, its mate will be automatically projected in the opposite direction. It will be understood that two extension slides are used, the intermediate member of each slide being fastened atone end to the side rails 15 and at the other end to a blind side rail 27. The outer member 28 of each extension slide is fastened at one end to the blind draw front 21 by suitable means such as countersunk screws 28.
The table top A is provided at the sides thereof with rims 29 and 30 of suitable 7 of the end rims 31' between which the leaf is accommodated. It will be observed that by this construction, when the table is extended and the leaf 32 is placed beside the top SAQtIieEFeiidS' ofthe raisin teasers,
tially'"flushwitlrtheends of the top at one sideedge thereof,'the width of the end rir'ns 31 being so slight as to cause said rimsto be hardly perceptible when. the table is covered. One of the side. rims, 29, ofithetable top. is connected by means of hinges 33 with "the inner side members of the extension slides, the parts being so constructed and: ar- 5 ranged as topermit thefree edge of the table top to be lifted some four or five inches when the table isto 'be=extende' d. The rim 7 of the table top, when the table is'collapsed will rest onthe upper, endsof two 'offthe legs 17,1,adj'aent to the blind drawer;
front 21; Supporting cleats 3% for the table drawer 35 may be mounted, on. the inner faces of the inner sidemembers of the extension slides. The extension leaf 32,when. the table is'collapsed, is supported on'the extension slides 'below the-table top- A, the
sideandfend: rims'ofwhich form ,a' neat l housing within which the extension leaf is appropriately concealed;
, Pivoted on the outer face of each of the outer side members of theextension slides are the lower ends of links 36 the upper ends of which are pivotally connected with the lugs 37 on the under faee of the extension 'leaf 32, said links normally occupying an inclined position as clearly seen; in 'Figs. .3
and '5. One oft'he links 36 of each slide 3 has a downwardly extending'lever arm 38 [38 will strike the-stops 39, thereby tilting the links 36 to'an upright position, and thus in the path of which a stop: 39 is arranged. When'the table'is extended, the lever arms projecting the extension leaf in an upward may berequired I I From the foregfing p n, taken in:
, eXed, the roperat-ionand advantagesof this direction, the parts being so proportioned that the topface of the extension leaf when thus projected will lie flush with the top faceof the table top A. When the table top is collapsed, the extension leaf will gravitate to its normal position. v
A suitable catcher latchdevice' 40 is-provided whereby .the table drawer may be locked with relation to the inner side mem bers ofrthe extension slides. A suitable looking device 41 is also provided whereby the extension leaf and the table top maybe securely connected together to holdthe parts f securely "in extended or collapsed relation as connection with the drawings hereto andevice will be. readily understood. The imgproved extension table is, simplein construc- -.tron,-durable,f1nexpens1ve,andeasily manip- I '6o' ulated,and-it will befound extremely-use- 1 601 1. it ifixnt efntf iay h b i e m t i-J nary dining table can not well be accommodated. '[Thetable when-collapsed presentsthe neatcand attractive appearance of an ordinary library table, .there beingdno exslid'es or the sides or ends of the extension leaf, to' indi cate the possible use thereof as "a dining table. The table, of course, may be made in various dimensions and more or less ornamental It is proposed to make the ex-' .ful in flats, apartments; andjother pla'ces where, owing to scarcity o'f'r'ooiman ordi-l posedparts suchas-the endsof extension tension leaf as wellas the table top of built- 7 a up material which will be extremely durable and ornamental as well asligh-t in weight.
It may also bestatedthatby the ,construction herein shown the table'may be conveniently knocked downfor storing and shipnected with the'frame, movable side mem bers one of which is connected with the outer side members of the extension slides, a table top having rimsat the sides andends thereof, hinges connecting one side rim of the tabletop with. the inner side members of the extension slides, and-an extension leaf housed. between the side and end rirnsfof the table top ;said extension leafbeing con-' V v neeted with the outer side members of the extension slides thy-links some of which have downwardly extending lever arms, the table frame being provided with stops lying in the path of said lever arms.
frame including a blind side rail, extension slides keachrhavmg an intermed ate member and lnneran'd. outerjsidemembers, the 1ntermediate members-of said extension slides bemg connected with thepermanent frame,
two movable side members one of which constitutes a drawer front, a tabletop having 2.1m an extension table, a permanent downwardly extending'rims atthe sides and i ends thereof, said table top being hingedly connected with the inner side members of.
the extension slides, an-extension 'leaf'normally housedbetween the side and end rims 1 of the table top, means whereby the exten sion leaf is movably connectedfwith the outer I side members of the extension slides, and,
means wherebysa d extension leaf is aut0fmatic'ally projected in an upward direction when the. table is extended. 7 Q .In' testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
