Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 19, 1916. Serial No. 98,683.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD T. Dvsox, citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland. in the county of Alameda an State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to containers and more particularly to a light weight device constructed of corrugated board.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a strong, inexpensive, easily assembled container for the handling of ruit, vegetables and the like.
Another object of my invention is to so fold the material contained therein that the container is to all intents water tight. Also to reinfcrce the ends in such a manner as to permit the stacking of one on the other without crushing the lower \Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein illustrated and more specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a view in perspective showing the improved container assembled, except for one corner which is slightly moved apart to show the manner in which the material forming the container is folded.
Fig. 2 is a view partly in plan in section.
Fig. 3 is a view in section on 3-3, Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a view in section on ,Fig.
Referring to corresponding parts of the several views by the same numerals of reference, the container consists of the bottom 1, side walls 2 and end walls 3. These parts are all formed from a single sheet of fibrous corrugated material folded along the edges 5. the surplus material at the corners being bent inwardly in triangular shape as shown at 6. This triangular flap is attached to the side walls by means of suitable metallic clips 7 there being in this manner formed a container without any seams and which by the application of a suitable moisture-proofing to the material will hold water.
To provide and partly greater rigidity and strength 1 provide certain reinforcements such as cleats 8 on the bottom. the vertical struts 9 at the corners, coinciding with the cleats, a strip 10 across the top of struts 9, and over which the upper edge of the end walls 3 are bent as shown in Fig. 4. Secured on top 0 this turned over edge and extending between the side walls is a cleat 12 which is naile to strip 10 and also secured to the struts 9 by the metallic reinforcing members 18. As an additional reinforcement the bottom corners have secured thereto pieces of fabric material ll, and the upper edges of the sides 2 have pieces of similar fabric 15 which when the box is folded come under the pieces 13, thus the nails which are used to hold the latter in position are driven through this reinforcing fabric to prevent the side walls from being torn out. Holes 16 are out in the ends 3 just under the horizontal strips 10 wh ch enable the box to be easily lifted.
In use the principal weight of the contents of the box of course rests on the bottom 1. The corrugations in the latter run lengthwise as shown in Fig. 3. Thus this construction together with the strips 8 prevent sagging of the bottom. The container is stiffened sidewise by means of the frame consisting of the struts 9 and strip 10. Also when one box is stacked on another the we ght is borne entirely on these struts. the fiber material of the container withstanding little or no strain due to the weight of the superimposed containers. In carting or dragging the box along a rough surface the cleats on the bottom serve as a protection to prevent the same from being torn or mutilated.
\Vhile I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention it will be understood that minor changes may be made in detail and design without departing from the scope of the claims.
I claim as new and wish to cover by Let ters Patent 1. A container having bottom. side and end walls formed from a single piece of material, vertical struts in the corners thereof, strips connecting the tops of the struts at the respective ends of the container, the uper edges of the end walls being bent over said strips, and means for securing said bent over edges to said strips.
2. A container having bottom, side and end walls formed from a single piece of ma terial, vertical struts in the corners thereof, strips connecting the tops of the struts at the respective ends of the container, the upper edges of the end walls being bent over said strips,
cleats resting upon said turne doc over edges, and means for attaching said cleats to the strips and the struts.
A container having bottom, side and end Walls formed from a single piece of material, vertical struts in the corners thereof, strips connecting the tops of the struts at the respective ends of the container, the upper edges of the end Walls being bent over said strips, cleats resting upon said turned over edges, metallic reinforcing strips engaging the first mentioned strips and the contiguous sides of the container, and means for securing said metallic strips to the first mentioned strips and to said struts.
In testimony WhereofI aflix my signature;
EDWARD T. D'YSUN.
