, PLATE `FOR BOOTSIAND p Speeicaton4 of Letters Patent.
PatentedFeb. 12, 1918.
Application-tiledApril `19, 1917. Y. Serial No. 163,196.-
To all whom/it may concern:
' Be--it known that I, CHARLES-"E: MORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing@ at Metaline, inthe countyiof Pend'Oreilleand State of tlVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plates for Boots and Shoes; and I` do herebydeclare the following to be aefull, lclear, and exact descriptionof the invention,-such as `will enable others skilledin the art to whichit .appertains to make and usejthe same.
This inventionrelates to half sole and heel plates for boots, shoesand the like.
`The object ofthis invention-is to provide a metal plate for" shoes--particularlyfthe styleused by carpenters, shinglemen, lum'- berinen, woodsmen and all persons .engaged in occupations where they are continually walking on smooth orlslippery surfaces, and the object-'lof this invention being to produce a `shoe that will absolutely Aprevent the wearer from slipping orjskidding in `either direction and thus Vpreventing him from being injured.
Another object of this invention is to provide a half sole and heel plate being formed or stamped from a piece of sheet steel to provide a plurality of `depending calks or teeth, which are vso construct-ed as to reinforce the portions from which they are stamped, and thus prevent the calks or teeth from being bent parallel with the body diie l to pressure placed thereon.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a device of this character, which will be simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive in construction, and which may be manufactured and sold at a low cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and set forth in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a bottom plan view illustrating the manner in which the plates are secured or attached thereto,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a shoe with the plates secured thereto,
Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2,
1Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the heel p ate,
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken through the plates to illustrate the manner in which the calks are reinforced,
Fig- 6: is a sectional view taken on the line .G+-6` off'Fig; 5. i i
Like numerals of reference designate correspondingiparts in all the figures of the drawings. i Referring moreparticularly to the draw* ing, ythe numeral 1 designates a shoe and 3 are the4 metal-plates; shaped `to conform'J vto theshape ofthe heel and sole respectively of the'shoe. ,"Each `plateis formed of suitable sheet ysteel: orthe like and has struck therefrom,`the teeth il, which teeth are bent downwardly at right angles to.` said plates land are substantially 4triangular and have their apexes constituting sharpened gripping points. The teeth are arranged translverselyacross theplates and each transverse rowof teeth are arranged at a spaced distance apart and the teeth-are alsoV formed near the side peripheral edges of each of the plates as at 6 to prevent the wearer from slipping in reither direction.` j The plates each are provided with 'the cut out portions 7 ,which are arranged between the rovvs of the teeth `as shown, and these cut out portions reduce the amountl of weight. y
The teeth of each of the plates deinea provided and itheir openings substantially-)Vlshaped opening 8, the walls of which are bent downwardly at right angles as at 9 to reinforce the same. The side edges of the teeth curve rearwardly as at 10 and the points slightly curve upwardly as at l1 to deine substantially cup-shaped teeth, which reinforce and prevent the collapsing of the teeth, due to excess pressure placed thereon.
Each of the plates is provided adjacent its marginal peripheral edge with the spaced openings 12, which is adapted to receive suitable fastening means 13, such as screws or the like and thus detachably securing the sole and heel platerespectively to the heel and sole of a shoe respectively.
The screws or the like 13 are inserted in the openings 12 and arranged at spaced relation around the peripheral edge of the plates and adapted to be embedded in the sole and heel of the shoe respectively, thus rigidly securing the plates in position and preventing the surface of the sole or heel from being worn upon, during the wearing of the shoe, it being understood that the calks of the plates or teeth of the plates assume all of the pressure of the wear plates thereon and prevent'V skidding or sliding of the person in either direction.
In operation, the plates are stamped as described to provide the substantially triangular openings, thus providing the teeth, which depend from the under sides of the plates and at right angles thereto, the walls of the openings are bent downwardly at right angles to .reinforce the same, the side edges of the teeth are curved rearwardly to provide the substantially cup-shaped teeth, which have the sharpened apexes 6, which prevent the skidding or sliding of the wearer of the shoe ineither direction.
I claim:
-' 1. A plate for soles and heels stamped of a sheet ofV metal to Vprovide depending triangular shape teeth and the walls of the openings from which the teeth are struck being bent downwardly at right angles tothe plate to reinforce the same, the side edges of f the teethfcurved rearwardlyand their apexes curvedV upwardly to reinforce said teeth to provide shallow calks, and means for securing the plates to the sole and heel respectively, as and for the purpose specified.
2.` A plate for the soles and heels of shoes, each plate formed or stamped from a single piece of sheet steel and shaped to conform to the configuration of the heel and sole respectively, each of the plates provided with spaced transversely arranged rows of teeth, which teeth are struck from the body of the plate and depend downwardly at right angles thereto, the walls of the openings delining the teeth curved downwardly and outwardly to reinforce the same and the Copies of this patent may be obtained'for side edges of the teeth being curved rearwardly to reinforce,V and strengthen the teeth when applied to the heel Vand sole of the shoe, and means adjacent the periphery of theplates `to facilitate the securing of the plates to the sole and heel of the shoe.
3. A plate for soles and heels Vcomprisingplates adapted to conform to the conzguration of the sole and heel respectively, each of said plateslformed` of; a sheet of steel andmhaving struclrdtherefromfa plurality of transversely arranged rowsof subp stantially triangular teeth, said teeth being arranged at a spaced distancev apart and `1 each row at a relatively spaced distance apart, the yteeth definingsubstantiallv triangular. openings, fthe, wallsV offwhich are bent downwardly'at, rightangles to the plates, and curvediforwardlyito reinforce the openings delined'by theteeth, the side ledges of saidteeth being curved rearwardly to form substantiallyshallow calks, which will reinforce and strengthen the teeth and prevent them fromrcollapsing when'under (neiARLns n.1 "Moliets y f' Witnesses: -V GARFIELD HOLLEY, j
