Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented lF'eb. 5, 191.
Application filed October 1, 1917. Serial No. 194,289.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZACHARY T. SWEENEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Bartholomew, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switches for Concrete Railways, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and figures, all references being marked thereon.
The figure is a plan view of my invention.
No. 1 represents section of regular track passing entirely through the switch with cut-outs at 2. 2. through which the wheels of a car travel in passing from the regular track to the elliptical side tracks hereinafter described. The regular track 1 is composed of concrete having a tread 3 upon which the wheels of a car run. 4 represents a guard rail projecting upward from tread 3. to keep the car on the track. 5 represents integral crossties of concrete connecting the guard rails binding the whole track into one solid. piece and doing away with mechanical devices for holding the tracks together. 6 represents an elliptical side track on one or both sides of the regular car. When no turnout is necessary the car passes over the regular track, running through the center of the switch. The ends of the elevated portions of both the regular track and the elliptical side tracks are made pointed as they approach the cutout to facilitate the passage of the car from one to the other tracks.
7. 7 represent spaces between the regular track and the elliptical side track, or tracks as the case may be. These spaces may be filled with common earth or concrete, as may be desired. By the word concrete as used in this description is meant any plastic material that it may be convenient to use in construction.
In cases where it may be profitable to use but one elliptical side track in addition to the regular track the other elliptical side track may be dispensed with.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and hope to secure by Letters Pat ent is- 1. A switch for concrete railways consisting of a regular track with an elliptical side track on one or both of its sides composed entirely of concrete.
2. A switch for concrete railways consisting of a regular track with an elliptical side track on one or both of its sides composed entirely of concrete and also a cutout to enable a car to pass from the regular track to the side track or the reverse.
3. A switch for concrete railways consisting of a regular track with an elliptical side track on one or both of its sides composed entirely of concrete with a cutout to enable the car to pass from the regular track to the side track and having the ends of the elevated portions of the tracks brought to a point where they approach the cutout.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ZACHARY T. SWEENEY.
Witnesses:
