To all whom/ it may concern:

'Be it known that I, JAMES EDWIN Fonnear, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bale and Package Ties, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.

My invention relates to bale and package ties and more particularly to a type thereof adapted to secure a rope or cord in relation to a bale, bundle, package or other article.

A tie made in accordance with my invention is particularly adapted for use in a re lation where it is subjected to heavy stresses, the object being to provide an article of this character, which may be firmly attached to a length of rope or cord and repeatedly used without such material abrasion of the rope or cord, as would result in the rapid wear thereof. A tie made in accordance with my invention, not only permits the rope or cord used in connection therewith, to be rapidly drawn taut but the cord may be quickly secured in place after being drawn taut, without likelihood of any stresses upon the cord resulting in the slippage thereof in relation to the tie, and may be instantly released.

I secure the desired result by providing a tie so constructed that a series of bights are formed in the cord about the tie, the first of said bights being a running bight to facilitate the tightening of the cord, and the other bights being so arranged as to cause stresses upon the cord in any of the bights to increase the gripping action of the tie upon other bights, in a manner to positively prevent movement of the rope or cord in relation to the tie.

A device made in accordance with my invention may be made of malleable iron or other material sufficiently rigid to be unyielding under stresses upon the rope or cord, and having sufficient strength not to readily fracture.

The invention consists primarily in a bale or package tie embodying therein a stem adapted to have a rope or cord permanently connected therewith, fixed gripper jaws upon opposite sides of said stem, an open eye adjacent said stem and intermediate said gripper jaws and an oscillatory cleat having gripper jaws cooperating respectively with said first named gripper jaws; and in such Specification of Letters Patent.

In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings, a indicates a stem having therein an opening 6 by means of which the end of a rope or cord may be permanently connected with the device by means of a knot or splice. This stem is provided with a head 0 having two gripping jaws cle arranged upon opposite sides of said stem, said jaws facing away from said stem. One of the jaws as e is provided with an overhang oppositely disposed to a recess in the stem 11, forming an open eye adapted to receive a running bight in the rope or cord.

Intermediate the jaws d-e, the head 0 is provided with a projection 9 upon which is mounted a rocking cleat it having aws /1,'/L2 oppositely disposed to the jaws d-e.

The jaws h-h respectively are spaced away from the jaws cle, so as to provide a normally open mouth at the outer ends thereof, or the ends thereof most remote from the pivotal support of the cleat h, so as to readily receive bights in the rope or cord.

The construction heretofore described is common to all forms of the invention shown, and embodies the essential characteristics of a device made in accordance with my invention.

The form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3 embodies therein means designed primarily to prevent the accidental escape of the rope or cord from between the jaws c-h and an additional locking element serving as a factor of safety in preventing the accidental loosening of the rope or cord.

This mechanism comprises a spring pressed latch member 2' mounted within the cleat 7t and projecting toward one of the aws as 6 upon the head 0, this latch being in the form of a'bell crank lever having a notched member j adapted to receive a bight in the rope or cord with the two-told object of retaining the latch in position and giving an additional hold upon the cord.

In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3, the jaws d@ and hh are recessed slightly, this form of the invention being especially adapted for use with light weight ropes, while in the form of the invention shown in Fig. 4, the jaws are substantially straight, this form of the invention being adapted for use on lighter ropes or cords.

I have found in actual practice that it is desirable to provide at least one jaw of each pair with" teeth in order to secure a firm grlp upon a rope or cord, these teeth 7 being, however, sufliciently coarse to prevent the abrasion of the rope or cord.

l/Vhile a device made in accordance with my invention is designed primarily for use with a single length of rope or cord, it is apparent that it may be used for connectingand tightening one piece of rope or cord secured to one object, with relation to another piece of rope or cord secured to another object, and holding these separate sections 01": rope or cord in the proper condition relative to the object to which they are attached.

The operation of the herein described device is substantially as follows In describing the operation of the device, I will assume that it is used in connection with a continuous piece of rope or cord, in tying a bundle. When so used, one end of the cord is passed through the opening 7) in the stem at and secured by a splice or knot. The rope or cord is then passed about the bundle and a bight formed therein by passing it through the eye 7, the rope or cord being passed underthe head 0 and brought over the top thereof. By taking up the running bi ht thus formed, the rope or cord may be drawn as tight as desired, and when so drawn a bight is termed therein between the jaws (Z-h the cleat h rocking to open these jaws to the full extent, permitting the rope or cord to freely enter same. In this manner the rope or cord is secured, first by a running bight formed adjacent the eye f, a locking bight between the jaws d-h, and a second 7 lockin bight between the jaws eh Re'lerring now more particularly to the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to '3, as the rope or cord enters between the jaws ek it will engage the latch member j and rock it about its pivot, so as to afl'ord ample room for the insertion of the rope or cord between said jaws, this latch member immediately returning to its lormer position when the rope or cord has passed same, in a manner to retain this rope or cord between the said jaws. Thereafter, another bight is formed in the rope or cord about the notched member j, the notch Of this stem being sufiiciently deep to rip the rope or cord in a manner to hold it against accidental displacement.

I have found in actual practice that the jaws cZhand eh hold the rope or cord suiiieiently firmly to prevent its slippage through the tie, but under some conditions it is preferable to provide for one running bight and three holding bights, and the arrangement of the member j is such, that when the rope or cord is passed about same, it will react upon the latch member in a manner to minimize any tendency of such movement of this latch member as would permit the escape of the rope or cord from the jaws eh It will be observed that by providing rocking cleat, as described, the grippingand binding action of the jaws is caused by the stresses applied to the rocking cl eat, through the rope or cord. Hence, there can be no such slippage of the rope or cord, in relation to the jaws, as would. tend to abradc same. The two sections of the rope or cord may be brought taut and held in relation to each other with great rapidity and the rope or cord may be as quickly released by merely snapping the rope from the jaws eh and d-h successively and permittin the running bight to pass freely through the eve f. In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 3 when snapping the rope or cord from the jaws e-h the latch member y will recede within the cleat h and thus not, abrade the rope or cord as it passes from the jaws.

It will be observed that when the rope or cord is removed from between the jaws 6]L2, the cleat h is free to oscillate in a manner to permit the free opening of the other jaws (Zh.

By providing diverging jaws, the device is adapted for use with difierent sizes of rope or cord.

WVhen the device is in use upon a hale, bundle or package, it will lie perfectly flat thereon in a manner to prevent its projecting from the bundle to an extent to expose it to shocks, as bundles are frequently subjected to such shocks and blows as might tend to distort same or loosen the rope or cord from the jaws. At the same time, when the device is applied to a bundle, the portion of the rope or cord as it passes to the eye f, is positioned between the head a and. the

shown in the accompanying drawings, it

being apparent that such may be varied without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

Having described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to have protected by Letters Patent is 1. A bale or package tie embodying therein a stem adapted to have a rope or cord permanently connected therewith, a head having gripping jaws presented away from, and projecting upon opposite sides of said stem, an eye adapted to receive a running bight of a rope or cord formed adjacent said stem and said head, and an oscillatory cleat having gripper jaws cooperating with said first named gripper jaws respectively, whereby a pair of gripper jaws is formed upon each side of said stem through which successively, the rope or cord, may be passed after being drawn through said eye.

2. A bale or package tie embodying therein a stem adapted to have a rope or cord permanently connected therewith, fixed gripper jaws upon opposite sides of said stem, an open eye adjacent said stem and intermediate said gripper jaws, an oscillatory cleat having gripper jaws cooperating respectively with said first named gripper jaws, and a notched member projecting be yond said cleat and adapted to receive a bight in the rope or cord.

3. A bale or package tie embodying therein a stem adapted to have a rope or cord permanently connected therewith, fixed gripper jaws upon opposite sides of said stem, an open eye adjacent said stem and intermediate said gripper jaws, an oscillatory cleat having gripper jaws cooperating respectively with said first named gripper jaws, and a movable latch member carried by and projecting from one of the jaws of said cleat, whereby accidental escape of the rope or cord from adjacent said aws is prevented.

5. A bale or package tie embodying therein a stem adapted to have a rope or cord permanently connected therewith, fixed gripper jaws upon opposite sides of said stem, an open eye adjacent said stem and intermediate said gripper jaws, an oscillatory cleat having gripper jaws cooperating respectively with said first named gripper jaws, a latch member pivotally mounted upon said cleat comprising a bell crank lever, one arm of which is adapted to be projected beyond the gripping face adjacent the ends of one of the jaws upon said cleat and the other arm of which projects beyond said cleat and has a notch therein adapted to receive a bight in the rope or cord, and a spring acting upon said said bell crank lever.

6. A bale or package tie embodying therein a stem adapted to have a rope or cord permanently connected therewith, a head carried by said stem having an overhang at one side thereof toward said stem, said stem being recessed adjacent said overhang to form an eye, said head having gripper jaws thereon upon opposite sides of said stem and said eye, a projection substantially centrally of said head intermediate said jaws, and an oscillatory cleat mounted upon said projection and having gripper jaws thereon cooperating respectively with said first named gripper jaws.
