TUMBLING TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 22, 1918.
Application filed March 21, 1917. Serial No. 156,241.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Hunnn'r A. il'lvnns, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Toledo, Lucas county, Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement-in Tumbling Toys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to toys of that kind in which a shifting weight, such as a ball, is arranged to shift back and forth in a guide-way, by gravity, so that the toy, although oblong, will roll or tumble end-overcnd down an inclined surface.
A11 object of my invention is to provide a novel and improved construction whereby a toy of this kind can be made with very little expense, but in an attractive manner, from paper or similar sheet material.
It is also an object to provide an improved construction whereby a toy of this kind is adapted for advertising purposes.
To these and other useful ends, my invention consists in matters hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation or face view of a tumbling toy embodying the principles of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a top view of said toy, in the position shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an edge or side view of Said toy.
Fig. 4 is a vertical section on line H in Fig. 8.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on line 55 in Fig. 4:.
As thus illustrated, my invention comprises a pair of oppositely disposed sections A and B, of paper or other sheet material, which are oblong and formed with rounded ends. The two sections can be alike, or the front section A can have the picture of a figure, and the back B can have advertising thereon. A guide-way C having side walls 1 and end walls 2 is interposed between said sections, longitudinally and centrally there of, and is of such length that it extends approximately to the ends of the toy. These walls are formed, for example, from a strip of paper or sheet material having the edges thereof glued or otherwise secured to the inner surfaces of said sections A and B, so that the latter are spaced apart and arranged parallel. In this way the walls 1 and the central portions of the sections A and B combine to form a sort of square tube which forms said guide-way. The ball D is inclosed in the guide-way l and is movable back and forth therein. The fillers E are disposed at opposite sides of the guide-way to prevent bending of the sections A and B, and to strengthen the general construction. Each filler consists of a strip of paper or other suitable sheet material bent at angles at the ends thereof, so that each filler forms an inclosed space. The edges of the fillers can be glued or otherwise secured to the inner surfaces of the sections A and B, so that the latter are rigidly connected and braced against bending.
When placed on edge on an inclined surface, the toy will tumble over, of its own accord, and roll down the incline, as the ball is heavy enough to tilt the toy upright as soon as it rolls down to the end of the guideway, so that the toy tumbles or rolls endover-end on th edge of the sections A and B, in a manner that will be readily understood.
As stated, the sections A and B are rounded at their ends, and by this is meant that the ends of these flat pieces of cardboard or other sheet material are so shaped that the toy will be operated by the ball in the desired manner, and while in the drawings the rounded. ends of these sections are formed by semi-circles, so that the toy tilts over first about one axis and then about the other, it will be understood that the ends of said sections can be given any suitable or dc sired formation, and may be in effect or for all practical purposes rounded in anysuitable manner, without departing from the spirit of my invention.
While the fillers or braces E, which serve to reinforce the construction, are shown as consisting of straight strips with their ends bent at right angles, it will be understood that these can be of any suitable or desired shape or formation, and it will be understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown .and described.
lVhat I claim as my invention is 2- 1. A toy comprising two oppositely disposed oblong sections of sheet material having rounded ends, transverse walls spacing said sections apart and forming a central longitudinal guide-way having closed ends, and a ball movable back and forth in said guide-way to roll the toy down hill upon an inclined surface.
in claims 1 and 2) having fillers between said sections at opposite sides of said guide-way, each filler comprising sheet material secured edgewise to sald sections, so that lnclosed spaces are formed at opposite sides of the guide-Way.
l. The said toy (substantially as set forth 1 in claim 1) in Which said guide-Way has the shape and form of a square tube, the two opposite sides of which are formed by the central portions of said sections.
of said guide-Ways.
Signed by me at Toledo, Ohio, this 16 day of March, 1917. V V v HUBER-T A. MYERS.
