. a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark. in the county of Essex .and State of New Jersey, have invented cer- My invention relates to bag fasteners, and
more particularly to a type thereof applicable to bag frames having` pivotally connected frame members, and embodying therein a lift latch adapted to lock said frame members when closed. The' jaws of the ordinary forms of hand bags, pocketbooks, satchels, and the like7 are all provided with interlocking members,l such as liftlatches, balls or heads which spring or snap past each other to hold the jaws together. If the hand bags or the like be unusually7 full or if either the proj ecting members constituting the fastener', or the jaws themselves, become bent or loosened, it often happens that the jaws are accidentally opened and the contents of the bag are lostor abstracted without the knowledge of the owner.
My invention comprises a new and improved locking means for hand bags and the like, and by which l seek to overcome the objections found in those heretofore employed.
In order to eliminate the above-mentioned evils, and overcome these objections, I have devised aV new lock, which has all the aclvantages of manipulation of a center lock, and to combine with it the feature of lockingthe bag frame at two points, said lock being designed to co-act with the ordinary lift lock for preventing accidental loosening or unfastening` of the same.
The invention consists primarily in a bag fastener embodying therein a frame consist- `ing of hinged frame members, one of which has an opening in the top thereof, alift latch member or knob provided with :a lug adapted to project through said opening` and within said frame, a spring, one portion of which is adapted to be operatively connected Specification of Letters Patent.

with said lug, and another portion of which is projected substantially radially of said lug and adapted to engage a side wall of said frame, and a nose or catch carried by the other frame member and adapted to be operatively connected by said lift member, and a slidably secured locking device secured to the side of one of said frame members for engagement with the lift latch or catch member, said locking device being designed to co-act with the lift. latch member for preventing accidental loosening or unfastening of the same.
lilith the various objects of my present invention in view, the same consists in the novel bag` frame fastener hereinafter set forth; and, furthermore, this invention consists in the various arrangements and the parts thereof, all of which will be fully described in the accompanying specification and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim thereof, which are appended to and form an essential part of this specification.

Referring now to the drawings, 1 and 2 represent a pair of frame sections, which are pivotally connected at their lower end portions in the usual well-known manner. One of said frame sections as 2 is provided in its upper surface with a suitably-arranged opening for the reception of an extension 3 formed on the catch member to be presently The catch member 6 which may be of any desired form or configuration, consists of the closed casing, provided with a down- `wardly-projecting spring-holding member or extension for the reception of the spring 8. The catch member 6 is further provided in its under side with another suitable recess 9, so that: when the bag frame .sections are closed, the locking member to be presently described, will be received into said recess 9 and will co-act with the catch member to iirmly secure the bag frame sections in locked position.
In my improved device, I provide a second locking device for holding the jaws together, which locking device is preferably secured to the frame member 1,V and'is operated independently of the catch member above described. In the specific form illus- Y trated, I employ a chambered cap 10, and a backing plate 11, the chambered cap 10 being secured to the frame member 1, by
means of a pair of integral tongues 12 formed on the cap, which are inserted through recesses in the backing plate and pass through suitable apertures formed on the frame ,member 1, and clenched overin any suitable or convenient manner.
Slidably secured within the chambered cap 10 and suitably guided therein by means of a guide 13 formed in the top of said cap, is the locking member 14, one end of which is adapted to project outside of the chambered cap, and to engage with the recess 9 or other means formed in the underside of the catch member and in close proximity to the recess 5, in order to have locking engagement therewith. The locking member 14, as illustrated in the drawings, is preferably made from a single piece of suitable sheet metal, and is provided with an aperture 15, designed to receive the eccentric 16. The eccentric 16 is also preferably made from a single piece of suitable sheet metal, and is provided with a circular raised portion 17, designed to engage with and rotateV in an apertureformed in the chambered cap 10. The circular raised portion 17 is further provided with an opening 18, to receive a loop 19, by means of which a pull piece 2O is pivotally secured to the circular raised portion 17. In order to manipulate the eccentric 16, the ends of the loop 19 are clenched over on the under side of the circular raised portion 17, as clearly indicated in the drawings, The
chambered cap 10, as clearly indicated in the drawings, 1s provided with a marginal flange 21, against which the backing plate 11 bears, in order to forni a closed casing. The fastener just described serves foradditionally holding the frame members 1 and 2 in locked position, and is independently opn erated from the catch member 6.
AIn order to operate my improved fastener, it is -rst necessary to turn the pull piece, `thereby causingthe locking element 14, by means of the eccentric 16,V to assume the position indicated in dottedV lines in Fig. 2, in which case it is in locking engagement with the aperture 9 of the catch member 6. In order to open the bag, the pull piece is again turned, when theV locking member 14 returns to the position indicated in Figs. 4 and 6 of the drawings, thereby causing the locking element to become disengaged from the aperture 9 of the catch member 6. If upward pressure is now brought to bear upon the casing by the thumb Vof the operator, the catch member 6 is swung backward en the spring holder member 3 and out of lockingengagement with the nosing or projection 4, causing the nosing 4 to clear therecess 5 therein. y
Experience has demonstrated that the organization above described is a highly eiiicient one, and while the device described is the preferred embodiment of my present invention, I d0 not care to restrict myself to the exact details of construction, combination and arrangement herein set forth, it being obvious that minor variationsthereof, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made by any skilled mechanic, and such departures from what is herein described and claimed, not involving invention, I consider within the scope and terms of my claims. Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim andsecure by Letters Y Patent is 1. In combination, two frame members movable relatively to each other, a catch member carried by one of said frame mehr bers and having locking engagement with the other of said frame members, of a Vslidably secured locking device secured tothe front of the other frame member for en-V` gagement with the under side of the said catch member. Y 2. In a lock for satchels, the combination with a Satchel having a catch member carried by one'of the frame members for normally holding said satchel closed, of alocking member secured to the front'of the other of said frame members, a chambered cap mounted 0n said last-named frame member, a single locking member slidably secured within said cap,said locking member being further provided with an eccentric for operating the Same to cause it to have locking engagement with the under side of said catch member.
