PORTABLE FAN.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRED C. HOWE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in the city and county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Fans, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to portable fans, and aims to provide improvements therein.

The fan of the present invention is intended principally for personal use, and provides a portable fan which is adapted to be conveniently held or carried in the hand, or set upon a convenient object, such as a table or a shelf. The invention, furthermore, provides a device which is simple, efficient, and cheaply manufactured.

The device is preferably self-contained, having an electric cell or battery in the handle thereof.

Other features of improvement will be hereinafter set forth.

An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherem- Figure 1 illustrates the device in side elevation, with the parts in position most convenient for hand use;

Fig. 2 illustrates the device partly in side elevation and partly in longitudinal section,

the parts being shown in the position most convenient for setting upon a table or the like; and

Fig. 3 is a front view of the device, the protecting casing in front of the fan being shown in section.

Referring to the drawings, numeral 1 designates a motor-driven fan, comprising a fan 2 preferably of the propeller type, and 3 any suitable electric motor for driving the same. The motor is preferably inclosed in a casing 4, and the fan is preferably provided with a wire guard or casing 5. The fan is preferably directly mounted upon the shaft of the motor. The fan, the motor, and also the casing, when present, are compactly arranged, so that the whole constitutes a compact unit.

By loosening the nut 10, the handle 6 may be turned upon the pivot 9 to a suitable position with relation to the'fan, and the nut tightened so as to hold the handle in the desired adjusted position.

Means are preferably provided for supporting the device in such manner that the fan may direct the current of air produced thereby outwardly when the device is set upon a table or the like. This means is preferably a pair of legs 11 the inner sides of which preferably have a contour corresponding to the underside of the casing, and.

When it is desired to set the fan upon a table or the like, the handle is turned preferably to the position shown in Fig. 9, and the legs 11 are turned down beneath the fan, the clamping screw 10 being turned to hold the parts in this position. When set upon a table the fan will have a position wherein the fan is upright. The handle and legs are, furthermore, capable of being adjusted in such manner that the fan may be pointed up or down to some extent.

The handle 6 is preferably made hollow and adapted to receive an electric cell 14:. The cell 14 may connect with one side of the motor circuit through a contact 15, and may contact with the other side of the motorcircuit through a make and break device 16, and the framework of the device on this side of the motor circuit may be grounded.

The make and break device 16-is preferably in the form of a disk or wheel having a conducting segment 17. By rotating the disk 16 until the segment 17 thereof is in contact with the shell of the cell, a circuit is made. The circuit may be maintained without further action upon the part of the user. When it is desired to break the circuit, the disk 16 is turned until the segment 17 is out of contact with the cell. The handle 6 is preferably provided with a removable portion 18, to permit the replacement of cells.
