Specification of Letters Eatent.
- Application filed January 22, 1917. Serial 1% o. 1%,722.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, GAsPnR HUoo GRINGS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Waterloo, Blackhawk county, Iowa, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Covers for Wind- Shields, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in removable covers for wind-shields, and the object of my improvementis to provide a simple, inexpensive, easily attached and removable cover or flexible awning or hood fora motor-car wind-shield, or for any window or the like to be protected from the elements.
This object I have accomplished b the means which are hereinafter describe and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of'a sectional wind-shield, with my improved cover mounted thereon; Fig.2 is an enlarged-detail perspective, with partsin section, of one of the resilient engaging clips as mounted upon the top of a wind-shield; Fig. 3 is a cross-section ofparts of the device shown in Fig; 2; Fig. 4 is a perspective detail of the resilient corner connections of the flexible cover or awning to the side standards of the wind-shield;

My wind-shield cover or awning 12 is of rubberizedcloth or any other suitable flexible material to be removably supported over the front surface of the upper section 11 of a wind-shield by my improved detachable supporting-means, so as tobe positioned at an inclination from the plate 11 to ward or rain or snow and thus preserve the surface of the, latter clear for unobstructed vision therethrough. 1W1 snares. We n a wirerod bent into an elongated medial loop 1 with divergent members, this loop being removably received in a pocket 13 on the lower surface of the awnin 12. Eachmember is then bent downward y and then upwardly to form a downwardly extending loop 2, then bent circularly into a loop 3v hll adapted to be mounted upon the horizontal part of the upper wind-shield frame-20, the members then extending downwardly in the rear of the shield section 11 to form arms 4: have extremities 1O bent horizontally toward eachother in alinement. These extremities 10 form supports for a tubular casing 6 having shoulders 5 to engage the arms 4: to prevent relative displacement of the casing, the casing having a forwardly extending socket in which is fixed an elastic pad of rubber or other material adapted to contact with the rear surface of theupper glass section 11 of said wind-shield.
The numeral 9 denotes a short rod on which is mounted a piece of tubular rubber 8, the ends of the rod being detachably mounted in the loops 2, and hooked to prevent their escape, and this tube or roller 8 contacts with the front surface of the glass section 11 nearly. opposite the elastic pad 7.
To keep the awning 12 taut and properly positioned upon the wind-shield, I have adopted the following means for resiliently connecting the front corners of the front shorter edge of the awning to the side standards of the frame-20,-but it is to be under-. stood that the details of these connections may be varied without departing from the principle of my invention.
The front longitudinal edge of the awn ing 12 is overlapped upon itself and then seamed to supply a tube 14 receiving a strap 15 which is secured therein and which pro-- jects from either end thereof, havingterminal loops 21 adjustably connected in each case with a slide 16 for shortening or lengthening the loop, the rear longitudinal edge of the awnin being stitched faston the loop 1. Each hoop 21 has an interlinked eyeplate 17, the latter connected to one end of a coiled tension-spring 18, the other end of the latter being connected to a looped hook 19, the latter engaging one ofthe side standards of the frame 20. The loop 21 may be shortened by. shifting the slide-connection 16, to place the spring 18 under tension when thehook 19 is enged with the frame 20, to draw resiliently laterally uponvthe awning 12, thus keeping the latter taut and secure in an inclined position. v
The awning l is easily removed from the wind-shield, v e clip-supports 1 remaining in the pockets 13, and the awning maythen be folded up in small compass, leaving no objectionable or unsightly mountings or projections upon the wind-shield frame when not in use.
When the loops-1 are inserted in the 7 pockets 13, and then placed with their curved parts 3 riding upon the horizontal bar of the frame 20, the rollers 8 and pads 7 engage opposite parts of the shield section 11 without marring the glass and are tightly held in contact therewith by the tension-producing springs 18. Sudden shocks therefore, do not endanger the glass 11, since the elastic pads and said springs counteract them.
My device may with no or slight alterations, be used upon a window sash or the like, to cover the glass therein, or used in any other desired position or relation to a surface to be protected.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a device of the character described, the'combination of a plurality of resilient brackets secured removably upon an object to be shielded, a flexible awning fastened upon said brackets, and resilient connections between the outer edge of said awning and said object adapted to place said awning and said brackets under lateral tension.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plurality of resilient brackets secured removably upon an object to be shielded, a flexible awning fastened upon said brackets, and adjustable resilient connections between the outer edge of the awning and said object adapted to place both the awning and the brackets under yielding tension.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plurality of resilient brackets secured removably upon an object to be shielded, an awning provided with pockets in which said brackets are fixedly seated, and connections detachably secured to and between the said object and the outer parts of said awning.-
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plurality of elastic brackets detachably mounted upon an object to be shielded, each bracket consisting of a rod medially bent into aloop with downwardly looped members having terminal hooks riding upon said object, the downwardly looped members positioned abutting 5. the combination of a plurality of elastic brackets/detachably mounted upon an object to be shielded, each bracket consisting of a rod medially bent into a loop with downwardly looped members, the members then bent into hooks adapted. to ride detachably upon said object, the extremities, of said hooks depending to abut upon onesurface of said object, the downwardly looped parts of said members abutting upon the opposite surface of said object, and an awning fastened upon the medially looped parts of said brackets, and connections between the said object and the outer parts'of said awning adapted to place the medially looped parts of the brackets under tension.
6. In a device of the character described, the combination of a plurality of elastic brackets mounted removably upon an object to be shielded, each bracket consisting of a rod bent into a medial loop, its members bent into spaced loops depending adjacent to one face of said object and then bent upwardly intohooks to ride detachably upon the upper part of the object, then bent 7. elastic brackets detachably mounted upon anobject to be shielded, a flexible awning fixedly mounted upon said brackets at an angle to said object, a flexible strap secured longitudinally along the outer edge part of said awning to project oppositely therefrom, clips detachably secured to opposite sides of said object, the tension springs adjustably connected between said clips and the extremities of said strap adapted to place the latter and also said awning and brackets under tension.
