PENCIL AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan.. fullo..
Application led July 5, 1916. Sera1l\To. 107,643.
To all whom z't may concern Be it known that I, LOUIS W. BELLAMY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of Jefferson and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Pencils and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pencils, and like articles, and has for its object to incorporate with the pencil structure one or more ingredients which will give a distasteful lavor to the material of which the device is made so that the habit of biting upon pencils and the like can thus be broken.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear` as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure l is an elevation of a pencil embodying the present improvements.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing a pencil in course of formation.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference l designates the body portion of a pencil or the like which, in the present instance, is formed by rolling into a compact stem a sheet of paper 2 or like material on which is arranged a partial or complete coating of some distasteful substance, such as quinine, aloes, red pepper or the like, this material being contained between the convolutions of the rolled strip and which convolutions are held together by any suitable adhesive. Thus it will be seen that should the device be placed in the mouth, the taste thereof will impel the user to promptly remove it and, consequently, the habit of biting upon devices of this kind will be quickly broken.
The present improvements can be used in connection with pencils, pen holders and like articles, and while it is preferred to incorporate the distasteful substance in the manner hereinbefore pointed out, it is to be understood that it can be used in other ways.
@ne solution which has been used with efhcient results for the purpose of impregnating articles of wood or paper has been made by saturating water with red pepper, aloes and tannin, leaving a certain percentv age of these ingredients in suspension. rThe mixture thus produced is applied thickly to paper used in the formation of the article and after it has been largely absorbed by the paper, leaving the undissolved particles adhering to one surface of the paper, said paper can be rolled into proper form and secured by means of an adhesive applied to one surface of the paper. A mixture such as above described can also be used in connection with paper pulp which is afterward made into the desired form.
Vilhat is claimed is A pencil or the like including a sheet of paper having a distasteful substance distributed over one face thereof, said sheet be ing rolled to form the body of the pencil or the like and to distribute the distasteful substance at different distances from the center of the pencil or the like.
ln testimony that l claim the foregoing as my own, l have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
