CLARENCE c. BAKER, or ALAMEDA, AND EARL A. CHANDLER, or SAN FRANCISCO,
CALIFORNIA.
GHANGEAIBLE SIGN.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CLARENCE C. BAKER and EARL A. CHANDLER, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at Alameda, in the county of Alameda and State of California, and San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Changeable Signs, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide a device for exhibiting signs, and especially for indicating characters denoting the tare weights of railroad cars, which shall be simple and cheap in construction, compact in form, and can be easily changed to exhibit different signs as; desired.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a front view of our improved tare weight indicator; Fig. 2 is a rear View-thereof; Fig. 3 is a sectional ,view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4'is a similar view, the parts of the indicator being extended; Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5'5 of Fig. ,3; Fig. 6 is a section on'theline 66 of Fig. 4; Fig.7 is an enlarged broken detail view ofasign card; Fig. 8v is a sectional view on the line 8-8 of Fig. 7.
Referrin -to the drawing, 1 indicates a board forming part of the side of a car, to which is secured, by screws 2, a rectangular plate or frame 3, having flanged'portions 4, the edges of whichrest against the board 1. From standards 6 projecting from the face of the plate near the ends of its lower edge extend at right angles studs 7, on whichare pivoted arms 8, the outer portions '9 of which are of reduced width. Near the outer'ends of said outer portions'9 and of the inner portions of the arms are secured to said arms cross bars 11, which are semi-circular in cross section through almost their entire length and to which are secured, by screws 12, cross bars 13 which arealso semi-circular in cross section, so that the two partswhen placed together form a round'compound bar. Each of these barsll, 13 has secured thereto, or formed integral therewith, semi-circular plates or disks'14 having flanges 15, so that the bars when placed together have thereon round 'fiangedrings or disks. By means of said flanges 15 there are supported upon the several disks sheets 17 of metal or other suitable material, each sheet being crimped at the top, as shown at 18, for

greater strength and having, near the top edge, rectangular recesses 19 opening through said top edge by narrow openings 21. The openings 21 are of just sufficient width to permit the disks, but not the flanges, to pass therethrough, while the recesses are of sufiicient width to permit the flanges to pass therethrough.
The sheets are placed in position engaging the flanges 15 of the plates 14 of the bar 11, and then the bar 13 is secured to the bar 11 so that the metal sheets can revolve on said flanges throughout their whole circum ferenoe. Each of the upper groups of sheets displays only the numerals 0 to 9, as shown at 23, but the right-hand of the lower groups of sheets displays characters 24 indicating the month and year when the car was weighed and the left-hand groups each display the letters of the alphabet, as shown at 25, indicating by its initial or terminal letters the place where the car was last weighed. There are therefore many more sheets in the lower groups than in the upper. For this reason the lower disks are'of greater diameter than the upper disks and the lower portion of the plate 3 is recessed or closer to the board 1 than the upper portion. The plate is formed with holes 26 to receive said disks.
Pivoted on the studs 7, outside the'arms 8, are the lower ends'of arms 27, the upper ends of which are pivotally connected, as shown at 28, to the sides or flanges of a cover 29, which incloses the sheets and plate 3. Said cover 29 is formed with rectangular holes 31 throughwwhich the characters 23, 24, 25 are exhibited and is pressed out, as shown at 32, to receive'the disks. 1
The cover is held in position close tothe signs by means of upper and lower latches 33,34, which engage lips 35, 36 extending inwardly from the flanges of the cover. The lower latch 34 has astem 37 V which slides in a-guideway 38 secured to the backof the plate 3 and is pressed outwardly by a coiled spring 39 within said guideway and com: pressed between the inner ends of the stem and guideway. To said latch 34 is secured a rod 41 pivoted, as shown at 42, to an arm of a lever 43, pivoted, as shown at 44, on the back of the plate-3, the other arm'lof saidlever being connected rigidly to a stem 46 of the latch 33.
To remove the cover a sufficiently long instrument, as a chisel, tapered to a blunt 1 ally connected to said cover end is inserted between the lower flange 29 and the board 1 and the outer end of the instrument is pressed toward the side of the car, so that the inner end is raised, the thick portion of the instrument serving as a fulcrum. The movement of the lip 36 against the beveled face of the latch forces the latch inward, and'also forces the latch 83 upward. This action frees the lip 36 from the latch 34:, so that the cover is free both at top and bottom and can be raised so as to permit of free accessto the sheets 17 to revolve the same upon the disks, and to change the character'of the sign exhibited.
Secured upon the upper flange at of the plate 3 isa cylindrical casing in. which is received a stem 51, upon which is wound a sheet of paper or the like material, upon wh ch is marked other information inregard to the car.
, We claim:
