EDHON'D L SALTEB,
BOLL-WEEVIL EXTEBMHATOR To all whom, it may concern: Be it known that I, EDMoNn A. SALTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cypress, in the Parish of Natchitoches and State of Louisiana, have invented-'certain new and useful Improvements' in Boll-Weeof `whichthe following is a specication.
This invention relates bollI weevil exterminating machinefid'ivthe principal object of the invention to provide a machine of the character in which the plants may be shaken' or agitated to cause the boll Weevils to drop fronthe. plants and to further provide improved means for removing the `boll' weevils from the ground and Vfrom the cotton plants, the weevil collecting portion of the machine including a suction tank for receiving the weevils and an air pump for driving the weevils to the inlet nozzle of the suction tank, the air supply pipe of the pump leadpending stand 13 ing from the to create a suction therein.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this machine that the aumiliary frame carrying the air pump and weevil receptacle may be vertically adjusted to bring the nozzle of the blast pipe and suction pipe into the proper position with relation to the ground.
This invention is illustrated in the accoiriu` panying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view showing the improved machine in side elevation, i
Fig. 2 is a view sho 1.5 e its in rear elevation, v
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the improv machine,
F ig. 4 is a view vertical longitudinal section,
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the nomle operating device, and,
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view through the weevil receptacle taken along the line 6 6 of F 3. c
This machine is provided with a tongue 10 having side bars or arms 11 and 12 extending rearwardly and :ww: in defor the axle or main driv i' the machine inI Patented Dec. 1s, 1917.
11 and 12. A driven shaft or pump actuating shaft 18 is rotatably carried by the side arms 11 and 12 and carries a large pulley Wheel 19 and a. small pulley wheel 20, the small pulley wheel being positioned in alinement with the large pulley'wheel 21 mounted upon the shaft 15 thus permitting rotary movement to be transmitted from the shaft 15 to the shaft 18 through the medium of the pulleys 20 and 21 and belt 22 passing around these pulleys. A clutch 23 is slidably mounted upon the shaft 15 and is engaged by latch lever 24 so that this clutch may with the clutch 25 of the pulley 21 thus controlling the rotation of the pulley 21.
The auxiliary frame 26 is positioned within the main frame and has its arms mounted upon the axle 18 and is provided at its forward end with an eye 27 with which is connected the line 28 carried by the 29. This cam 29 is pivotally mounted in a slot 10 formed in the tongue 10 and is conneet@ with the yoke 30 by means of a pin 31 so that when the shaft-32 with which the yoke is connected, is moved longitudinally of the machine, the cam will be rocked upon its pivot 29 and the aliary e vertically adjusted. This shaft 32 extends longitudinally of the frame and is provided at its rear end with a lever 33 b means of which it may be rotated or oscl ated to actuate the nozzle operating mechanism to be hereinafter described. A latch lever 34 vis ced by the toe 10 and is provided l with an eye 35 whi engages the rdnced intermediate portion 36 of the R32 and provides means whereby the shaft may be moved longitually to k the 29 vertically when the latch lever is moved.
,A sleeve 37 is mounted upon the shaft 32 to rotate 'th the shaft d cae a depen 0F CYPRESS, LOUISIANL-ASSIGNOB OF ONE-BALI TO CHARLIE l.
PHABIS, OF NATCHITOCHES, LOUISIANA.
into 1 opening 39 formed in the plate 40 extending from the bar or head 41 connecting the nozzle moving or actuating arms 42. This head 41 is slidably connected with the cross bar- 43 by clamps 44 and when the shaft 32 is rotated or oscillated by means of the lever 33, the actuating bar will be moved transshaft 46 through the medium of the pulleys 24 and 47 and belt 48 passing around these pulleys. The iiexible outlet pipe49 for this pump terminates in a nozzle 50 positioned opposite the inlet nozzle 51 of the flexible l pipe 52 leading to the tank or weevil receptacle 53. This receptacle 53 is provided with a removable closure 54 carrying a Wire cage 55 to receive the Weevils andhold the same against passage from the housing into the pipe 56 leading to the pump 45.. It will thus be seen that when the pump .is in operation, the air will be sucked through the pipe 52 ,into the housing 53 and through the pipe 56 into the pump from which it will be forced through the pipe 49 and out thr0ughthe nozzle 50. This air blast will strike the plants thus driving the boll `weevil over toward the nozzle 51 into which they would be sucked and drawn upthrough the pipe 50 into the receptacle 5 3 where they" would accumulate in the cage 55. It will thus be seen that there has been provided a boll weevil exterminator which can be drawn across a field with the machine straddling a row and the boll weevil caused to drop from the plants through the operation of the collector, the auxiliary frame being adjusted vertically and the head 41 shifted so that the nozzles will be held adjacent theQplants to act upon the weevils with the blast from the nozzle 50 driving the weevils toward the nozzle 52 into which they will be sucked and drawn into the housing 53.
