RAIL-FASTENER.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL I-I; HANSEN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of'Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rail-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to rail fasteners and more particularly to the kind employed in connection with portable railway tracks.
Portable railway tracks are usually made in sections, which sections are either made up and when transported to the place of use, are merely laid on the ground and coupled together, when the railroad is ready for traflic; or, the rails, ties, etc., may be shipped and assembled on the ground. j The rails are laid on steel ties, and my invention relates to the device for fastening the rails 'to the ties, its object being to provide ya fastener, which will hold the rails securely in position and prevent the rails from tilting due to the pressure of the wheels. A further object of my invention is to provide a device in which the rail is held securely in position without having ,the fastening devices pass through openings cut into the ties and which tend to weaken the construction.
To these ends, my invention comprises the is a plan view of a portion of a tie and rail showing my improved fastener; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3, Fig. 2.
The numeral 2 designates the rail having the flanges 3, which rest upon the tie 4. The tie 4 is a channel-shaped member with the depression or groove 5 rolled or otherwise formed therein longitudinally thereof.
The fastener comprises the clutch-bolt 6, which has the inturned end portion 7, the straight shank portion 8, and the threaded end portion 9. The inturned portion 7 and the shank 8 are preferably formed oblong in cross-section, the upper face of the shank being preferably formed flat. The end portion 9 is preferably upwardly inclined for the purpose more fully hereinafter set forth.
The inwardly turned end portion 7 of the clutch-bolt engages the flange of the rail on one side, the shank portion 8 passes under the rail in the depression 5 of the tie, and

the upwardly inclinedend portion 9 passes through the opening 10 formed in the plate 01' abutment 10a of the clip l1. The clip 11 is secured by the rivets 12, or in any other suitable manner, to the tie 4, the lip 13 extending over the adjacent flange of the rail. The clip 11 is formed with the projection 14, which extends below the bottom face of the rail base, and the shank of the clutch-bolt in passing beneath said rail, engages said projection 14.
The clip 11 is vprovided with the swell 15 to accommodate the upwardly extending portion 9 of the clutch-bolt, and said swell has the plate or abutment 10a in which the openin 10 is formed, through which the upwar ly extending inclined portion 9 of the clutch-bolty passes, said abutment being slightly outwardly inclined.
A. nut 16 engages the threaded portion 17 of the upwardly inclined portion 9 of the clutch-bolt, and when said nut is drawn up tight against the abutment 10, the inner end 7 of the clutch-bolt is forced into contact with the flange of the rail, and the opposite flange is forced into close engagement with the lip 13 of the clip 11. By having the projectionv 14 on the clip 11 extending below the rail base and engaged by the shank of the-bolt, when the nut 16V is tightened up and the inner end 7 of the clutchbolt is forced into contact with the flange of the rail, the clutch-bolt is drawn up tight against the projection 14 and is held in a horizontal position so that it cannot lift up. If it were not for this contact between the clip and the clutch-bolt, the rail would be liable to lift away from the' tie to some extent if the track lsections were lifted by the rails. The clip 11 is made of a steel or other metal having a suitable amount of resiliency, so that the plate or abutment when engaged by the nut 16 for drawing up the clutch bolt can yield so as to make a tighter hold and at the same time acts as a lock for 100 and cars tends to tilt the rail outwardly, and 105 .the clip lwhen placed on the outside, is not so eflicient to prevent this.
'By my improved fastener, the clips may be riveted on to the ties and the clutch-bolt inserted loosely so that to assemble the 110 a media? tracks, the rails only need to be laid down on the ties with one edge inserted under the clip, and the nuty on the clutch-bolt is then tightened up' by a few turns of a wrench. lin this way, by having the parts all attached to the tie, the rapidity with which the track sections may be `formed is greatly increased; and, at the same time, the parts are not liable to become lost or mislaid.
What ll claim is:
l. ln a rail fastener, the combination of a tie having a longitudinal groove therein, a clip secured to said tie having a flangeengaging lip, a projection on said clip extending below theprail base, an outwardly inclined abutment extending down into said groove and having an opening therein, a bolt having an` inwardly extending end portion, a shank portion passing through said groove engaging said projection, an npwardly inclined end portion passing through said opening in said abutment, and a nut engaging said upwardly inclined end portion beyond said abutment.
2. ln a rail fastener, the combination of,
a tie having a longitudinal groove therein, a clip secured to said tie having a flange engaging lip and outwardly inclined resilient abutment on said clip having an opening therein, a bolt having an inwardly extending end portion, a shank portion passing through said groove, an upwardly inclined end portion passing through said opening in said abutment, and a nut engaging said outwardly inclined abutment.
