Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 5, 1917. Serial No. 172,889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD C. REYNOLDS, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Mineola, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Trunk-Roping Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is intended more particularly for embodiment in a trunk roping de; vice, although capable of use as a tying means for packages, etc.
The prime object of the invention is to provide a tying means employing a rope, string, or like flexible strand formed into loops at right angles to each other together with novel means co-acting therewith at the intersection of the loops and arranged to permit of the tightening of the strand and the fastening of the free ends thereof, with facility and despatch.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tying device embodying my invention, showing the same applied to a trunk;
Fig. 2 is a plan View.
In carrying out my invention in. practice, two plates or blocks 10 are provided and each is formed with pairs of holes disposed at right angles to each other, so that the holes correspond in positions with the angles of a diamond-shaped figure, the numerals 11, 12 indicating the holes of one pair, and the numerals 13, 14: indicating the holes of the other pair in each element 10. A rope, string, or the like, designated generally by the numeral 15, is formed into transverse loops 16, 17 and a longitudinal loop 18, the elements 10 being disposed at the intersection of the loops.
The string or rope 15 runs from one terminal of one transverse loop through the adjacent lateral hole 14: of the adjacent element 10 and obliquely beneath the said element and through the adjacent hole 12 of the longitudinal pair of holes and is then formed into the longitudinal loop 18 which a at its opposite end is passed through the corresponding hole 12 of the other element 10 and obliquely beneath said element, the cord being then formed into the second transverse loop 17. Thus, the cord, rope, or string runs from one terminal of each transverse loop through an element 10 and is then contlnued to form the longitudinal loop 18. The string 15 at the opposite terminals of the transverse loops presents free ends, the end from the terminal of one loop 17 being passed through the adjacent laterally disposed hole 14 and brought under the opposite end of the loop to be. frictionally gripped between the said loop and the outer surface of the adjacent element 10. The
string, if desired, may be given a bend as at 14* about the plate at the hole 14; From the second transverse loop 16 the free end of the string is carried through the adjacent holes 11 of the respective plates 10, that is to say, longitudinally of the package and then returned on itself and passed beneath the longitudinal loop to be gripped between the same and the plate 10 adjacent to the loop 16.
By the described device the loops may be readily passed about the trunk A or the like, and properly positioned thereon, the loops being then readily tightened by the string being drawn through the plates 10. It will thus be seen that the tightening of the loops and the fastening of the ends of the string will be efiected conveniently and quickly.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A trunk roping device including a continuous flexible strand and two like co-acting fastener elements, each having strandreceiving holes disposed in pairs at right angles to each other so that the holes correspond in position with the angles of a diamond figure, the said strand being formed into two transverse loops emanating from the holes in opposite sides of the respective elements, said strand running obliquely through each element from one end of each transverse loop and formed into a longitu- Patented Dec. 11, 1917.
