sELr-MAsKINe FILM.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patentgd Dec, 11.; 1917',
Application filedMay 25, 1916. Serial'No. 99,848.
- To all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, DELOS A. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Ames, in the/county of Story and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Masking Films, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a self-masking film and has for its object the production of a film or plate or other sensitized negative wherein the film or plate is provided with a mask border around the edges thereof in order that a print may be taken therefrom, and a white border be formed around the edge of the print without the necessity of employing an additional or substitute mask.
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and efiicient means whereby the mask is formed directly upon the film or other negative, thereby allowing a clear cut border to be formed around the edge of the picture.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will appear throughout the following specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan View of a portion of a film after the same has been developed showing the mask formed there-on.
' Fig. 2 is a plan view of the print taken shown in Fig. 1.
from one of thepictures taken upon the film Fig. 3 is a plan view of a sensitized plate prior to the development thereof. showing the mask formed around the edge of the plate.
By referring to the drawing it will be seen that 1 designates the film which istmade of the usual or desired structure, and this film is provided with a mask border 3 around each side edge thereof, which'mask border 3 is connected at proper intervals to suit the different size or shape of the picturedesired to be taken by means of a mask bar 4. This mask borderand bar 4,
of course, form a continuation around the edge of the picture, the bar 4 being substantiallytwice as wide as the border 3 so as to allow sufiicient space at each end of each film to produce the desired border upon the any othercolor. However, as stated above,
it is not desired to limit theinvention to any particular color of border or mask formed around the film.
As illustrated in Fig. 2 it will be /seen that a print 2 has been shown taken from the negative indicated by the numeral 5, wherein a border 6 is shown formed around the edge of the print, the border showing upon the print white and the other shades being formed upon the face of theprint as is usual with such prints taken from a negative. o i
In Fig. 3 there is shown a modification of the invention wherein a sensitized plate Y 7 is employed having a border or mask 8 formed around all four edges thereof of suitable width to produce a desired border upon aprint, this mask or border 8 being formed preferably of a. ruby color or any other desired color to suit the convenience end of the print which is'to be printed. It
of the person using or manufacturing the sensitized mediums, such as a plate or film. Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is H As a new article of'manufacture, a sensitized medium for use in photography, said medium having separated exposure fields and being provided with margins of actinically opaque material formed along its edges, said, sensitized medium being-further provided with a plurality of equally spaced transverse stripes of actinically opaque material extending between its ex posure fields, said transverse stripes being ofsubst-antially twice the width of said margins, whereby a border of equalwidth may b e-formed around a print made from a detached negative, formed in any one of said fields.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature. DELOS A. DAVIS.
