To al; whom@ 'may camera? Beit knpw'n 'am L raenenpa ijv. 1309K, ING, a citizen ofthe United- States, land4 a resident" tof Van Buren, inthe county ofv Crawford and State ofArkansa'S, have in#` vented anew and inproved'Needle-'Sharpener, ofV which the following is' `a` full, clear, an'dcxact desk'zri'ption.Y c,
'My invention'relates Jto adevice for sharpening the needles of talkin-gv machines and more particularly the dei/"eis intended for the-- sharpening of' ompioisi'tion needles largely employed owing to .their being less harsh on the recordthan ste'elneedles.l .The
sharpening of the composition needle on emery paper is ordinarily attended with great dii'liculty in the effort to produce a uniform t-aper on the needle, without which there is not a uniform sound produced, and there is a. liability of injuring the more delicate members of the record.
The prime object of my invention is to provide a. sharpening device whereby the needles may be given a desired taper and the sharpening be accomplished with facility, accuracy and despatch.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide a durable device of the indicated character` and made up of very simple elements, whereby it may be cheaply produced.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a needle Sharpener embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3, Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a. perspective view of part of the chuck holder. y
In carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example,asuitable frame or base is provided which may consist of an oblong block 10. The front end 11 of the block provides an upstanding elevated support for receiving a. suitable sharpening medium such as a piecejof emery paper 12 which is removably held in position by a clamping cap 13, the center of which is open to expose the emery paper' the sides or which' present" depending "flanges .tt'ed sn gly onto the top 4of the vsaid endfpci'r'- To' hpld a needle A, an elongated chuck lfl is proyided, 'the front" end of which may have' any apprv'e'd'meansfor holding`t-lie needle, there being conventionally indicated in the prese'r'it instance as at 15 an axial hole or socket. The Chuck 1:4, forits major por#v tion, is'prelfer'ably round cross sectionfto f'acilitater itsbeiiig'v turned between the fingers. Nearthe rearnend the chuck is formed an annular groove 16 and at said grooved portion the chuck is received in an upstanding holder or carrier designated generally by the numeral 17, the upper end of which is formed with a concaved depression as at 18 to receive the chuck. Said carrier 17 is hinged to the base 10 in any suitable manner as at 19 whereby the carrier may bc rocked forwardand back to carry the point of the needle forward and back over the surface of the emery paper 12. The height of the carrier 17 relatively to the supported emery paper is such that the chuck and needle will assume an inclined position. Suitable provision is made to vary the height o-f the chuck carrier 17 for which purpose the upper end 17 n thereof may be in the fo-rm of an extension piece which is vertically adjustable, there being a vertical slot 20 in the member 17a and receiving a wing screw 21, or the like, which is threaded into the body of the carrier near the upper end.
lVith the described construction the needle having been placed in the chuck and the grooved portion 16 of the latter received in the depression 18 of the carrier, the said carrier is rocked forward and back and at the same time the chuck is turned about its own aXis. Obviously the taper may be varied by adjusting the effective height of the carrier 17 to vary the pitch of the chuck and needle.
In order to limit the forward and backward movements of the carrier 17 I provide stops on the base 10 and these desirably may take the form, as shown, of Ornamental brackets 22 separated to permit the necessary limited movement of the carrier. By limiting the movements of the carrier the needle point is prevented from being dam` Y llO rection and prevented from being moved rearwardly oil' the said clamp 13.
In practice I provide the base with tapered sockets 23 constituting gages, Whereby to insert the point of the needle in the sockets so that the needle may be inserted only to the proper extent in the chuck. The gage sockets 23 may be formed vertically in the top surface of the base as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, and these sockets may be of varying depths. Also, a similar gage socket 24 may be produced in-a side, or sides, of the elevated front end l1 or other part of the base.
I Wish to state in conclusion that although the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not Wish to limit myself strictly to the mechanical details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied Without departure from the yspirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
l. A needle Sharpener includinga base having sharpening means thereon, a chuck adapted at its front end to receive a needle to be sharpened, and means to support the chuck for reciprocating movement to subject the needle to the action of the sharpening means, the said base having gage sockets therein adapted to receive a needle point.
2. A needle Sharpener including a base having sharpening means thereon, a chuck adapted at its front end to receive a 4needle to be sharpened and formed with an annular groove rearward of the front end, a chuck carrier hingedly supported to reciprocate the chuck and subject the needle to the action of the sharpening means, and an eXtension piece on the upper end of the carrier and vertically adjustable thereon, said eX- tension piece having a depression receiving the grooved portion of the chuck.
