To all wiiom it may concern lie it known that I, PETER BROWN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Expansi ble Mop-Heads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clearyand exact description of the same, reference being" had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to an improved form of mop head adapted to receiveatta ched thereto a well known type of oilmop fabric in a manner permitting ready detachinent of the mop fabric when necessary for washing, and againadmitting replacement of the mop upon the mop head in a simple manner. By this invention, it is only necessa ry to actuate a single member which contracts expandible members, thus permitting the mop fabric to fall away from the mop head. The mop fabric may be again attached upon the mop head by expanding the members to cause the mop fabric to be tightened and retained upon the mop head.

lit is an object therefore of this invention to construct a device provided with expandible means grooved to engage a mop fabric and when expanded serving to tighten thereon upon the device, holding the same securely retained thereon for use.

it is also an important object of this invention to construct a device provided with eirpandible means actuatable into expanded position by toggle levers which move beyond a dead center position to prevent aecidental retraction of said expandible members.

ltis also an object of this invention to construct a device consisting of a base plate provided with expandible members pivoted thereto and with toggle levers connected to actuate the expandible members toward and away from one another and to hold the same in an expanded position to retain a mop fabric attached upon the device.

The device consists of. a main or base plate 1. of oval shape and pointed atone end, and having integral ears 2, struclrupwardly therefrom projecting vertically from the upper face of the base plate to afiorda pivotal connection for a handle socket member 3, by means of rivets at, engaged through said ears and through tongues 5, formed on each side of the handle socket member. An expanding mechanism for tightening a mop fabric upon the mop headis provided, which consists of a pair of similarly constructed members adapted to.be spreadapart from one anothen and each comprising plates of metal 6 and 7. having curved or outwardly concave flange elements 8 and 9, respectively,

Said expandible members are connected to the base plate 1, by means of a rivet pin or stud 10, and for this purpose the upper pl'ate'6, of one of-the clamping members and the lower plate 7, of the other clamping member are cut away, so that said expanding members may lie flush with one another upon the base plate 1.

Near the rear end of each of said ex pandible members pins or studs 11, are secured thereto which engage through slots 12, in the base plate 1, said slots being of arc shape and concentric about the pivot pin 10, asa center. Also pivotally connected upon the upper end of said respective studs 11, ar'e actuating toggle links 18, which are each connected at their ends to a common stud 14;, mounted on the end of an actuating link 15. For the purpose of operating said actuating link 15, a plate 16, is provided, pivoted by means of a Stud 17, upon the base plate 1,. and disposed between the webs ofthe expandible members with the end of said actuating link 15, pivotally connected eccentrically thereon. Said plate 16, is provided with an actuating handle 18, which, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, is bent upwardly to permit the same to swing over the web or plate 6, of either one of the expandible members. The mop fabric for attachment upon the head consists of a plurality of strands of fabric 19, which, at their upper ends, are secured together by stitching and bound with fabric 20, thus affording a ring or continuous closed loop adapted to be engaged around the mop head within the concave expandible members thereon.

In the modification illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9, I have provided a modified means of operating the toggle links, and for this pur pose the toggle links are connected at their ends upon a common pivot which is provided with an internally threadedhead or nut 21. In place of the eccentric mechanism for actuating the toggle links, I provide a lead screw 22, threaded through said head 21, and journaledin tongues of metal 23 and 2 1, struck upwardly from the base plate 1, there being a collar 25, secured on said lead screw adjacent the tongue 28, and a knurled actuating head 26, on the end of the screw, ,which coacts with said collar, preventing longitudinal movement of the screw itself, although permitting rotation thereof.

' The operation is as follows:

'In order to detach the mop fabric from the mop head for the purpose of washing themop fabric after the same has been used "a considerable time, the handle 18, is swung {from the longitudinalposition shown in Fig. l, to a position such 'as shown in Fig. 2, thereby pulling inwardly on the toggle links ;13, and retlracting the expansion members, t e. fi. ses -,9, t ieh fi eh op fabric. Of course in connecting the map fabric upon the mo head the reverse operation takes place, that is the mop head is inserted within the continuous loop ill, of the mop fabric, and with the outwardly concave flanges of the expandible members of the mop head loosely engaging the same. The handle 18. is then pulled around into a longitudinal position, thus causing the actuating lever 15, to thrust the toggle links 13, rearwardly past a dead center position, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, such. position of the toggle links preventing an iltftiltltllltll retraction of the expandible members which maintain the mop fabric attached to ihc mop head.

In the modified form of device illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9, the lead screw 2, erves the purpose of actuating the toggle levers 13, and of course the threads on said screw are of relatively large pitch, in order to secure a considerable movement of the thrcaded nut or head 21, when the lead screw is rotated. However, in the latter construe tion the expandible members may be adjusted apart to any desired position and will be retained therein for the reason that the threaded connection is irreversible except when properly actuated by the knurled head 26. The pivoted handle socket member 3%. as clearly shown in Fig. 7, permit; an easy use of the mop upon the floor or any articl wherein the mop is moved toward and away from the person, the handle socket member 3, swinging with the handle and permitting the mop to lie flat in all positions.

I am aware that various details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.

I claim as my invention:

1. In a device of the class described a base plate, grooved expandiblo members pivoted thereon, and links connected to said base plate and to said members for actuating said members into expanded position. to en gage a mop fabric.

2. The combination with a continuous looped mop fabric of a mop head comprising a base plate, cxpandible means flatly disposed thereon and pivoted thereto adapted to expand within the loop of the mop fabric to firmly secure the same in position by expansion, a plurality of links connected to said expandible means, and means connected thereto and to said base plate adapted to expand or retract said links when actuated.

3. In a device of the class described the combination with a base plate of a unitary loop shaped mop fabric, horizontally exp'andible means pivoted on said base plate adapted to releasably engage said mop fabric, a lever mounted on said base plate, and

4t. In a device of the class described a base plate, a plurality of expandible memhers pivoted thereon, a handle socket pivoted on said base plate, toggle links connected to said expandible members, and means to actuate said toggle links to ex pand said members away from one another.

In a device of the class described amop head comprising a base plate, pivotally mounted horizontally expandible means flatly disposed thereon adapted to be eX- panded to maintain a mop fabric upon the mop head, toggle links for actuating said means, a link mechanism connected to said toggle link for operating said toggle links past a dead center position to prevent accidental retraction of said expandible means, and attaching means for a handle on the mop head.

6. In a device of the class described, a mop head comprising a base plate, expandible members pivotally connected therewith, a toggle link on each of said members, a plate pivotally mounted on said base plate and an actuating link having one end there of connected to said toggle links and the other end thereof connected on said plate,

The combination with a looped mop fabric, of a mop head comprising a flat base plate, expandible members pivotally connected with one another and to said base plate, a grooved flange on the outer edges of said expandible members affording a channel surrounding said base plate, toggle links connected with said expandible members, and. a lever connected with said links to expand said members to secure the mop fabric against the flange.

8. The combination with a looped mop fabric, of a mop head comprising a base plate, expandible members pivotally connected with said base plate, a grooved flange on the outer edges of said expandible members affording a, channel surrounding said base plate, and means adapted to expand said members and to secure the mop fabric in the channel.
