Be it known that T, WALTER l. TU'r'rLE, a citizen of the United States, .and a resident of Providence, in the county, of Frovidence and State of Rhode lsland, have invented an Improvement in Beam Construction, of which the following is a specification. y
This'invention relates tothe construction of warp beams and the like. @ne of the objects is to provideapparatus of the above type of simple and practical construction and efficient action. Another :object is to provide `apparatus of the above type in which the parts are securely held iniposii tion and yet well adapted to meet the conditions of use in textile machinery. Another object is to provide apparatus ofthe above type of 'inexpensive construction and low cost of maintenance in efficient condition. @ther objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of partsl which will be exemplified in the structure hereinafter described and the scope of the application ofwhich will be indicated in the following claims.

Referring now to Fig. 2 of the drawing, there'is shown in sectionthe end construction of a warp beam, it being understood that 'both ends `are substantially identical, and one end only being shown in `order to avoid encumberingV the drawing. lThis warp beam comprises acentral barrel or cylinder1 which isrigidly constructed and may be built up according to any desired specific form `such asvthat indicated in my cio-pending application Serial No. 102,369, filed June 8th, 1916. It may here be noted that the term cylinder isused in a broad sense to denote broadly the body portion of `a warp beam on which the material is wound and beyond which the heads project in a radial direction whether such member be built u or integral.
Extending from end to end through the cylinder 1 is a shaft 2 provided at each end with a journal 3 which is supported in a suitable bearing in the machine. The cylinder 1 at the end `portion through which the shaft passes is recessed as at Lland provided with an` outer clutch ring 5 having the usual conical inner surface. This ring is secured to the cylinder in any desired manner to turn therewith.
Mounted upon the shaft 2 is a flanged hub casting `6, the inner end of `whichprojects within the recess 4 and terminates in a i clutch portion 7 radially cutl as along the lines `8, shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. This clutch member mates with the clutch member 5 within the cylinder 1 and is held in position by the lock nuts 9 threaded upon the shaft andbearing against the outer end of the hub. By these nuts 9, the pressure of contact of the clutch members is adjusted and the parts locked in adjusted position.
On the flange 10 there is mounted a head member 11 preferably formed of sheet steel and provided with a central opening through which the hub 6 fits. The head member 11 is riveted as at 12 to the flange 10, thus being securely held in position atthat point, and its outer surface bears firmly against the outer portions `of the cylinder l. The head member 11 extending past cylinder 1 terminates 'at its outer edge in a flange formed integral with its body and so shaped as to provide a belt race 13.

rection away from the cylinder 1 as indicated 4at 14.
iAlthnugh the head portion 11 is of sufficient rigidity to make a firm engagement with the end of the cylinder 1, it nevertheless has a capacity for slight yielding to permit appreciable movement of the ca st hub6, thus permitting the pressure on the clutch to be adjusted or wear to be taken up. The sheet metal member, moreover, is firmly and evenly urged against the barrel by the flange 10 about which it is secured and thus forms a light and yet strong head construction for the'end of thebeam. The pressure onv the clutch, however, is not restricted or .limited by the lightness of this head con struction for it is brought to bearmupon solid central hub castings and may thus be increased to any desired extent. In the action of the apparatus, the ends of the shaft 2 being mounted in suitable bearings, the beam is freely rotatable and its endwise or axial movement as a whole is limited by the lnuts 9 which serve this purpose as well as i thence through the frictional clutch to the vobvious from the above beam itself. The sheet metal portion of the head permits'any desired diameter of belt race to be employed without waste of metal, and Yyet where the metal is needed in larger amount as to take up the heavy compression at the shaft, there is provided a casting which effectively transmits the power to the beam. This form of head member accordingly has little inertia7 thus being readily susceptible to changes in drive, and yetfby the economical disposition of the metal, makes an effective frictional connection with thebeam which will permit relative rotary movement of these parts should the threads become entangled or for any other reason the load upon the beam become excessive.
The use of the apparatus will be'largely description of its features of construction and action, and it may benoted that these features are especially adaptedl to meet the conditions of the hardest practical use in textible machinery.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention and as various changes might be made in the embodiment above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown inthe accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

in combination, a cylinder having a clutch g portion formed Vin its end, and a'two-part Vand isheld by said iirst head, one portion of which is of cast metal and co-aets with saidclutch portion, and the outer part of which is of sheet metal part against the outer portions/of the end of said cylinder.
In construction of the class described, incombination, a cylinder havingA a clutch portionY formed in Vits end, a two-part head, one` portion. of which is of cast-metal and co-acts with said clutch portion and is provided with a radially extending part, and
the outer part of which head is formed of sheet metal and secured to the radially extending part of said cast metal portion 1.o bear against the outer portion of the end of said cylinder, a shaft extending through said cast portion, and means adapted to force the portions of said clutch together.

In construction of the class described, in combination, a cylinder, a sheet metal head member having an edge portion shaped to form a belt race whereby it may be rotated, and a cast central member about which said first head member is secured and having a clutch portion thereon, said cylinder having at its end a clutch portion with which said first clutch portion eo-acts.
5. In construction of the class described, in combination, a cylinder having a clutch portion in its end, and a head provided with a clutch portion co-acting therewith, said head having its outer portions bendable relative to the central portion to bear evenly upon the outer portions of said cylinder when said central portions are clutched together.
6. In construction of the class described, in combination, a cylinder, a sheet metal head member bearingagainst said cylinder, a shaft passing through said cylinder and through said head member, a central head member rigidly secured to said irst member, and nuts threaded upon said shaft and bearing against said rigid central member to force it toward said cylinder.
7. In construction of the class described, in combination, a cylinder provided with a clutch portion, and a head having its central portion in rigid engagement with said clutch portion and its outer portions yieldngly engaging the outer portions of the end of said cylinder.
8. In construction of the class described, in combination, a cylinder, a head having a cast central portion engaging the end of said cylinder and an outer sheet metal portion provided with a flange forming a belt race, a shaft passing through said cast portion, and means on said shaft adapted to force said cast portion toward said cylinder.
9. In construction of the class described, in combination, a cylinder having a clutch portion formed in its end, and a two-part head, one portion of which co-acts with said clutch portion and the outer part of which is held by said Iirst part against the outer portions of the end of said cylinder, said outer portion having formed integral there with at its outer edge a belt race through which it is adapted to be driven.
0 In construction of the class described, in combination, a cylinder having a clutch portion in its end, and a head provided with a clutch portion co-acting therewith, said head having its outer portions bendable relative to the central portion to bear evenly upon the outer portions of said cylinder When said central portions are clutched together, and the outer portions of said head being bent into a belt race whereby it is adapted to be rotated.

In construction of the class described, in combination, a shaft, a cylinder mounted on said shaft and provided with a clutch member positioned Within a recess in one end thereof, a cast hub member having a portion entering said recess and (3o-acting with said clutch member, and an outer Harige, means upon said shaft adapted to force said cast member toward said cylinder, and an annular sheet metal head memw ber secured to the flange of said cast member and extending outwardly therefrom.
