ACETYLENE-TORCH.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, NICHOLAS BARRY andCLYnE ALLEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Muscatine, in the county of Muscatine and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Acetylene-Torches; and we herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear,

These torches have been usually made in such manner that the full flame burns continuously unless the operator separately closes the valves and extinguishes the flame; which renders it necessary to repeatedly relight the torch when used intermittently, and causes considerable loss of time. If the operator allowsthe torch to burn continu ously a great waste of gas results; and frequently causes serious accidents.
The principal object of 'our invention is to provide such a torch with means Whereby the gases are under the instant. control of the thumb or finger of the operator; and by simply depressing a finger lever a heat ing flame may be produced as and when it is desired to use the torch; and when the torch is not in actual use the flame can be cut 01? by merely releasing such finger lever, while a pilot light will be maintained ready to ignite the flame when it is again wanted; so that the operator can handle such torch with safety and use it efiectively'. as and when he may desire.
A further object of our invention is to save the acetylene and oxygen gases by having them both under the control of the operator, who can, by merely moving the thumb or finger of the hand holding the torch open or close the controlling valve means so that after an operation is performed the flame can be shut off while leaving a pilot light; and this is a great advantage where the nature of the work requires intermittent use of the torch; and it also .prevents injury to workmen by accidental contact with the flame when the torch is not in actual useful operation; and it also protects fellowworle Specification of Letters Patent.

We will explain the invention in connection with the embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings in Which- Figure l is a side view of the complete torch.

The invention is shown as applied to a torch having a handle 1 provided with a head 1 in which are two gas passages 2 and 3 that are respectively connected at their inlet ends to pipesQ and 3, that are in turn to be respectively connected, by suitable tubing or hose, to reservoirs of oxygen and acetylene gases, or other suitable gases used in such torches.
The outlet of the passage 2 is connected by a pipe 2 with the burner-head or mixing chamber 4, which may be of usual or any suitable construction. The outlet of the passage 3 is also connected with the head 4 by means of a pipe 3".
The passages 2 and 3 are controlled by suitable valve means adapted to be simultaneously operated. In the example shown a taper valve 5 extends through the head 1 and intersects both passages 2* and 3, and said valve 5 is provided with two ports, 5 and 5 which are adapted respectively to establish communication between the inlet and outlet ends'of the passages 2 and 3 or to close said passages when the valve is properly adjusted.
The ports 5 and 5 are preferably so arranged and constructed that port 5 will be closed after the port5 -is closed, and will be opened before port 5 is opened; this is for the purpose of insuring that the acety-.

in a convenient position to be depressed by the thumb or finger of the hand of the workman grasping the handle 1 of the torch. The valve may be closed, or normally returned to closed position, by suitably arranged spring means; in the drawings a helical spring 8 is shown as connected to the projecting end of the valve and to the casing.
The head 1? of the handle, is preferably provided with lugs 1 and 1 projecting on opposite sides of the lever 5 and through said ln s 1 and 1 are tapped, screws 6 and 7 whic serve as adjustable stops to limit the throw of the lever 5 and consequently the extent of rocking movement of the valve The extent of rocking movement of the valve is regulable by adjusting stops 6 and 7. The stop 6 should be so adjusted that when the finger piece 5 is disengaged the spring will cause the valve to shut ofl the oxygen gas and partly shut oil the acetylene gas, but permit enough acetylene, or other suitable gas, to pass to the mixing head i to support a pilot light at tip of head 4. The stop 7 should be adjusted to such position that when the finger piece 5 is depressed the valve is turned so as to admit the proper amount of oxygen and acetylene gases, or other suitable gases, to the mixer-head t to produce the desired operative flame.
Operation.
The torch should first be properly connected with. suitable gas supplies. Then when the operator desires to use the torch the pilot flame should be ignited at tip of the, head i; and when he is ready to apply the flame he depresses finger piece 5 with the thumb or finger of his hand holding the torch; thereby operating the valve 5 and opening both passages 2 and 3 and admitting the proper supply of oxygen and acetylone or other suitable gases to flow to the head 4, and produce the working flame; and this flame is continued so long as he depresses the finger piece 5. If he desires to inspect the work, or upon completion of the work, he can release lever 5 by moving his finger or thumb without letting go of the handle; thereupon the gas will be shut off, except such as is required for the pilot light. WVhen the workman wants to again use the torch he simply depresses the finger piece 5 and immediately the service [lame is produced.
lVith such a torch there is no danger of the workman injuring himself or adjacent workmen by carelessly handling the torch when the flame is on, as is the case with the present commonly used burners or torches and such torch greatly economizes gas, fa-
cilitates working operations, and obviates a great deal of the danger heretofore attendant upon the use of such torches.
What we claim is:
1. A torch, having a handle provided with passages for acetylene and oxygen gases, a mixer head, pipes connecting the outlets of said passages with the mixer head, and means for conducting suitable gases to the inlet of said passages, valve means intersecting said passages having ports adapted to communicate therewith, a spring for closing the valve, a finger lever connected with ing the valve when the thumb lever is re leased; with stops for limiting the opening and closing movements of the valve means whereby a full fiameis maintained when the said lever is depressed; and apilot light maintainedwhen the lever is released.
3.18, torch, adapted to be held in the hand, having a handle provided with gas passages, means for supplying gases to said passages, a mixer, pipes connecting the mixer with the passages, valve means controlling the flow of gases through the passages, a .valve controlling lever adapted to be operated by the finger to open the said passages when. the lever is depressed, and spring means for closing the valve means when the lever released; with stops for limiting the opening and closing movements of the valve means whereby a full flame is maintained when the said lever is depressed; and a pilot light maintained when the lever is released.
