Description

Patehted m, 41,1917;
I/l/l/E/VTOR GEORGE 1.. TuLLY Arman/Em ans 4 GEORGE L. TULLY, OF SOUTI-IBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOB T0 AMERICAN OPTICAL COMPANY, OF SOUTHBRIDGE. MASSACHUSETTS, A VOLUNTARY ASSO- CIATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
EYE rno'rncron.
Application filed July 30, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. TULLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Southbridge, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eye-Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in eye protectors and has particular reference to that type of goggle provided. with side screen or shield for protecting the eyes of the wearer.
The leading object of the present invention is the provision of an improved construction of side screen or shield member which shall have a portion formed from solid material toabsolutely prevent access of undue lateral light or the like to the eye of the wearer, and shall be additionally provided with a screen or protected apertured portion which will permit of free ventilation of the space inclosed by the protector lens and shield and will at the same time have a general protective action.
A further object of my invention is the provision of an improved manner of constructing a shield of this character which shall at once be simple and inexpensive of manufacture and at the same time produce a desirable construction.
Other objects and advantages of my improved construction should be readily apparent by reference to the following specification taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and it will be understood that I may make any modifications in the specific details of construction shown and described within the scope ofthe appended claims without departing from or exceeding the spirit of my inventlon.
Figure I represents a front view of a protector embodying my improvement.
Fig. II'represents an end view thereof.
Fig. III represents a sectional view taken as on the line IIIIII of Fig. II.
Fig. IV represents a plan view of the metallic stamping or blank.
Fig. V represents a plan view of a slightly modified form of my invention.
Fig. VI represents a sectional view taken on the line VI-VI of Fig. I.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes the bridge member of my improved pro- Specification of Letters Eatent.

tector having at each end a lens receiving rim or frame 2 for the protecting lens 3 and having pivoted to said rim or frame 2 one of my improved shield members. Temples or like head engaging devices a serve to retain the mounting in position on the face of the wearer.
By reference particularly to Figs. II and III it should be seen that my improved protector shield comprises a solid or nonperforated portion 5 and an apertured or perforated portion 6, being illustrated in Fig. V as formed with the perforations 7 to permit of ventilation of the shield, and. in Fig. II this portion being shown as hav ing a plain aperture backed by a mesh or screen 8.
In connection with Figs. III and IV it is to be noted that when the mesh 8 is employed the screen section comprises the main blank or non-perforated portion 5 and the frame portion 8 inclosing the aperture 6. In addition the portions 5 and 8 are provided with the rim portions 10 adapted to be reversely bent and clamped against the screen 8 to securely lock the screen in position. This action of the rim 10 is supplemented by the rim portion 11 on the straight side of the screen which is also adapted to be reversely inwardly bent onto the back side of the screen, thus providing a complete finished edge for the shield member and at the same time securely locking the screening in position. Attention is further invited to the fact that the member 11 is provided with the ears 12 adapted to overlie the ears 13 on the screen proper, the said parts having alined perforations 14 to -re ceive the pivots for the shield member.
In the form of construction specifically illustrated in Fig. V the general construction is the ame, in that the rim portions 10 and 11 are similarly provided to be reversely portion which may be disposed either at the top or at the bottom, as desired, and which will be an absolute protection against flying particles of metal, chips or the like when the protector is worn in the industrie and will thus to the greatest degree prevent possible injury to the eye, while at the same time I have provided the apertured portion of the screen disposed at a point not exfrom, including a pair of ears at two sides thereof, and a rim strip connecting one of the ears of each pair, whereby when the rim is reversely folded onto the shield the ears connected thereby will overlie the other ears of the pair and in connection therewith form a durable pivot joint for the shield, substantially as illustrated.
2. An eye protector including a pair of lens receiving frames, means for securing the frames in position on the face of the wearer, shield members pivoted to the frames and of substantially triangular form extending from the frames to the face of the wearer adjacent the temples and said triangular shield members each comprising a solid protective portion and a perforated ventilating portion disposed upon opposite sides of the center line of the triangular shield member.
3. An eye protector including a pair of lens receiving frames, means for securing the frame in position on the face of the wearer, shield members pivoted to the frames and of substantially triangular form extending from the frames to the face of the wearer adjacent the temples and said triangular shield members each comprising a solid protective portion and a perforated ventilating portion disposed upon opposite sides of the center line of the triangular shield member, each shield member having a plurality of members projecting therefrom, including a pair of cars at two sides thereof, and a rim strip connecting one of the ears of each pair, whereby when the rim is reversely folded onto the shield the ears connected thereby will overlie the other ears of the pair and in connection therewith form a durable pivot joint for the shield.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
