Copy-Holder Attachments for Type-Writers,
of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates generally to copy holder attachments for typewriters,
and morev particularly to structural improvementsl in the line spacing mechanisms described and claimed in my co-pending application Number 789650, filed September 13, 1913, and myFatent Number 144190, dated June 22, 1915.
The object of my improved invention is to simplify the construction of many of the parts going to make up the line spacing mechanism in order to both reduce the cost of manufacture and incre-ase their effectiveness in the respects to be hereinafter pointed out. Another object resides in the structure of the copy-holder itself, more particularly the adjustment of its parts and their susceptibility of dismantling, with reduced cost of manufacture and increased effectiveness also in mind.

Referring now to these figures, and more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, I have utilized for purposes of illustration an Underwood typewriter, the frame of which is generally indicated at 10, its carriage at 11, its platen roller at 12, its line spacing lever at 13, the function of which is to turn the platen roller,

'the wing-nut in the relatively opposite diand its adjusting piece at 14, the function of which is to control the extent of rotative movement or" the platen roller under actuation of the lever 13 so as to either single, double or triple space as desired.
According to my present invention I mount the copy holder plate 15 in vertically adjustable relation upon an upright stem 16, the lower end of which stem is adjustably held in connection with the supporting base 17 in such manner as that the stem may be adjusted angularly with respect to the base and the copy' holder plate thus supported in either a truly vertical or slightly inclined position.
Thus the base 17 has a centrally upstanding and transversely apertured lug 18 through which is extended an eye-bolt 19, the lower end of the upright stem 16 depending through the eye of this bolt adjacent one side of the lug 18 and the opposite end of the bolt being threaded to receive a wing-nut 2O having a single wing 21 extended to form a handle. In this manne-r when the nut 20 is rotated in one direction the lower end of stem 16 is forced, tightly against the adjacent side of lug 18 and clamped in immovable relation, irrespective of whether the stem is in truly vertical or inclined position. Rotative movement of rection of course operates to release the upright stem and permit of either its entire removal or adjustment as desired.
In the adjustable connection between the copy holder plate 15 and the upright stem 16 I eliminate all necessity for riveting or spot welding by upsetting portions of the plate rearwardly at its center to form vertically spaced and `horizontally projecting ears 22 and 23, the upper ear 22 having a central opening 24 of substantially the diameter of stem 16 and the lower ear 23 having a central recess 25 extending inwardly from its edge and small apertures 26 therethrough at the sides of the recess. With these ears is adapted to coperate a bracket 27 having a curved body andv upper and lower extensions 28 and 29 to lap the ears 22 and 23 respectively, the upperextension 28 having an opening 30 for registry with the opening 24 and the lower extension 29 having a central recess 31 to cooperate with the recess 25 and upwardly projecting side lugs 32 for engagement within the apertures 26. In this'manner the stem 16 may be projected through the recesses 25 and 31 and through the openings 24 and 30 and may be clamped at any de sired point by means of a thumb screw 33 operating through the central threaded aperture 34 in the body 27 of the bracket.
Thus it will be seen that the bracket 27 as well as the upright stem 16 may be wholly detached from the copy holder plate 15 in laterally and forwardly bent flanges 37 disposed against the inner surface of coperating forwardly extended flanges 38 which are provided with slots 39 for the recep tion of a clamping bolt 40 extended therethrough and through apertures in the iianges 37 of the indicating bar, this bolt having a nut 41 and operating to permit the indicating bar to be clamped in adjusted position with respect to the. copy holder plate 15.
In accordance with my invention thev barA 35 is provided with upset ribs 42 along its longitudinal edges and with which the upper and lower flanged portions 43 of the letter indicating slide 44 coperate, instead of forming the bar with inturned longitudinal edges, the operation of forming these upset ribs 42 being much more simple and less expensive.
The Slotted flanges 38 are`bent forwardly from the upper and lower portions of the body plate 45 forming part of the `casing containing the means for shifting the indicating bar 35 upon the copy holder plate, this casing also comprising a cover plate 46 best shown in Figs. 12 and 17.
As will be seen by reference to Figs. 13, 14 and 16, the body plate 45 slides upon the rear surface of the copy holder plate 15 adjacent the left hand edge of the latter, the
vbody plate 45 of the casing having bent arms 47 at its inner edge which slidably embrace the usual rack bar 48 secured vertically along the rear surface of the copy holder plate 15.
Intermediate of its outer vertical edge, the body plate 45 is provided with a twisted extension in the form of a horizontal bracket arm 49 having clamps 50 and 51 at its forward and rear ends respectively, each of these clamps being controlled by a threaded set screw 52 to respectively clamp the outer ends of projecting sheaths 53 and 54, through the former of which projects the flexible chain 55, the outer portion of which extends along the bar 35 as best seen in Fig. 11 and through the clamp 56a carried by the letter indicating slide 56 in order that the latter may be adjustably positioned thereon. The outer extremity of this flexible chain 55 is extended within and connected to the tensioning device 36 before Maaate extension at its lower end forming a finger piece 61, the inner end of the arm 58 of this lever being fulcrumed at 62 upon the lupper portion of the yoke 63 fulcrumed at its lower end at 64 centrally of the lower edge of the cover plate 46. This yoke 63 is provided at its upperend with a lateral stem 64a which projects 'outwardly through an arcuate slot 65 in the cover plate 46 and to which is connected the end of a flexible wire or similar connection 66 extending ythrough the sheath 54 before mentioned. The yoke 63 also has a side extension 67 having an inturned end lug 68 for a purpose to be hereinafter described. i
The body plate 45 supports a shaft 69 on which is mounted a gear wheel 70, this gear wheel being inmesh with the rack bar 48 and having a ratchet wheel 71 rigidptherewith and engaged by a spur 72 adjacent the inner fulcrumed end of 'the lever arm v58 so that when the yoke 63 is moved to the right `in Fig. 13 under actuation of the flexible connection 66,the ratchet wheel will 'be turned, rotating the gear wheel which through its engagement with'the. rack bar 48 lowers the casing of 'the copy holder plate, the lever 60 being held in engagement with the ratchet Wheel 71 by gravity alone.- The extent to which the casing is shifted upon the copy holder plate depends upon 'the length o f movement of the yoke 63, a full stroke of which brings lug 68 into engagement with the ratchet wheel as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 13 and thus prevents further and accidental rotation of the ratchet wheel 71 and the gear wheel 70.
A pair of dogs 72 and 73 are respectively pivoted at 74 and 75 upon the body plate 45 above 'the gear wheel 70 and above one another, the upper dog 72 having its nose 76 engageable with the rack bar 48 and the lower dog having its nose 77 engageable with the gear wheel70, this engagement of the dogs being normally maintained by a spring 78. rllhus the parts effecting the shifting movement of the indicator bar 35 are locked at each step in their movement by the dogsl 72 and 7 3 and are effectively prevented from movement beyond the desired extent.
The dogs 72 and 73 are simultaneously movable out of engagement with'the rack bar 48 and gear wheel 70, however, by means of their relatively engaging lugs 7 9 and the lower dog 7 3 is provided at' its free end with an angular extension 80 overlying the arm 58of the lever 60. Thus when'the lever is raised by means of its linger-piece 61 to dis* engage its projection 72 from the ratchet wheel 71, the dogs 72 and 7 3 will be simultaneously rocked on their pivots and out of engagement with the gear wheel and rack bar- 48 in order that the casing may be free to move upwardly and in order that such movement may so follow raising movement of the lever 60 as to be practically. continuous.
After each actuation of the yoke 63 by the flexible wire or other connection 66 to shift the indicator bar to the desired extent, the parts are returned to normal position by means of a return spring 81 mounted upon the upper surface of the cover plate 46 and one arm of which engages the yoke projection 64.
The relatively opposite end of the sheath 53 of the letter indicating connections is sethe flexible chain 55 passing around the pulley 85 journaled on said bracket and extending along the rear portion of the typewriter in the rear of its carriage 11 and connected at its extremity to said carriage by means 0f a button 86 detachably engaged within the recessed wing 87 of a bracket 88 secured on the carriage atthe right hand end thereof.
The relatively opposite end of the sheath 54 through which the flexible connection 66 of the line spacing mechanism extends, is engaged in a clamp 89, controlled by a thumb screw 90 and carried by a plate 91 having a rear depending lug 92 and a connecting pin 93, the said plate when mounted in c0nnec tion with the typewriter, having its lug 92 extended into a recess 94 at the end of a bracket 95 secured upon the left hand end of the carriage 11, this brackethaving an aperture 96 in which the connecting pin 93 is engageable in order to prevent disengagement of the said lug from the said re- Y cess. The flexible connection 66 passes from this latter end of the sheath 54 and is con` nected to an adjustable clip 97 removable with the detachable plate 91 before mentioned.
The clip 97 has an over-hanging arm 99 and an vadjusting pin 100 mounted through apertures in this over-hanging arm and the lll@ clip body, for engagement 'with a selected aperture 101 of an arc arm 102 upon which the clip 97 is adjustable.
According to the present invention the arc arm 102'forms a lateral extension of a plate 1 03 which is pivotally mounted at 104 in which is pivotally mounted an eXtension arm 109, the latter being adapted to swing on its pivot 110 to horizontal and vertical positions respectively within and out of the path of movement of the upright linger piece 131J of the line spacing lever 13, as will be clearly seen by reference to Fig. 5. Thus with the arm 109 turned'to upright position as shown in Fig. 5 the line spacing lever 13 of the typewriter may be actuated without affecting the line spacing mechanism of the copy holder. IVith the arm 109 turned down to horizontal position, however, it will be Vcarried along by the line spacing` lever in the movement of the latter and thus the line spacing mechanism of the copy holder will be actuated in the same degree as the platen roller 12 providing the clip 97 is adjusted to a position corresponding to the adjustment of the controlling member 14 before mentioned. It will thus also be seen that when the arm 109 is turned to upright position it forms a finger piece by which the plate 103 may be swung on its pivot to actuate the line spacing mechanism of the copy holder independent of the action of the typewriter.
kThe plate 91 before mentioned is detachably connectedupon the bracket 95 in the manner set forth in order that it may bereadily removed and utilized in connection with manual operating means where it is desired to control the line spacing mechanism of the copy holder otherwise than automatically in connection with a typewriter as before set forth.
To this end plate 91 may be readily removed by lifting the pin 93 out ofthe bracket opening 96 and removed from the typewriter carriage with the clip 97 which is readily detachable from the arc arm 102 and plate 91 maythen be attached to a stationary bracket 111 rigidly secured upon the table or other support upon-which the typewriter is mounted, and at one side of the. typewriter, as seen in Fig. 1', and provided with .an upright portion having a recess 112 and an aperture 113 at its rear end to accommodate the lug 92 and pin 93 of the plate in the same manner as these parts are accommodated by the recess 94 and aperture 96 of the typewriter carriagel bracket 95.
The forward end of the stationary bracket 111 carries a screw or bolt lliexten'ding through an intermediate'aperture 115 of a lever 116 at the forward end of which is a iinger piece 117 and at the rear end of which is an upwardly projecting arc arm 118 having apertures 119 to receive the clip 97, lever 116 being thus intermediately pivoted so that downward movement of its forward end will actuate the line spacing mechanism of the copy holder manually in substantially the same manner in which it is actuated ceiving the upper end of a suitable depend-l ing connection 12a carrying a stirrup or other foot piece 125 at its lower end, whereby the leve-r 116 may be actuated either by the foot of the operator within the stirrup 125 or by means of hand pressure app-lied upon its finger piece 117. The stroke of the plate 103 is also controlled by means of a bracket 126 rigidly secured upon the typewriter carriage and having an upwardly projecting linger 127 disposed in the recess in plate 103 for this purpose.
Thus from the foregoing it will be seen that my present invention provides numerous differences both in construction and operation with respect to my applications mentioned before, and it will be seen that these differences materially simplify` and cheapen those structures employed in connection with my previous applications. It will further be seen that I attain these advantages as to simplicity and reduced cost not only without decreasing-the strength and effectiveness of the structure constituting my applications referred to but I materially increase both the strength and effectiveness and provide connections susceptible of both automatic and manual operation, with different lmethods of manual operation from which the operator may select that which best serves his purpose or his convenience.
I claim:
1. In a copy holder attachment for typewriters, the combination with the line spacing lever of a typewriter, of an arcuate arm movablel with the lever, a clip adjustable on and detachable from the said arm, a bracket mounted on a portion of the typewriter, a clamp having a detachable connection with the said bracket, a copy holder plate, an indicator bar movable thereon, mechanism for shifting said bar with respect to said plate, a flexible connection between the said mechanism and the said adjustable clip, and a flexible protecting sheath through which said connection works, having one end thereof engaged by the said detachable clamp. 4. In a copyholder attachment for typewriters, the combination with the line spacing lever of atypewriter, of a supportingo bracket, a plate pivotally mounted `on the bracket in vertical alinement with the fulcrumof the lever and having an arcuate arm, a clip adjustableon the arm, an extension arm pivoted on a portion of the plate and movable into and out of the path of movement of the said line spacing lever, a copy holder plate, an indicator barmovable thereon, mechanism for shifting the bar on the plate, and a flexible connection between the said mechanism and the said clip, all for the purpose described.
5. In a copy holder .attachment for typewriters, the combination with the line spacv ingi lever of a typewriter, ofl a bracket mounted in connection therewith, a plate pivotally mounted on the bracket in the same vertical plane with the pivot of the spacing lever and provided with a laterally projecting arcuate arm and a forwardly extending portion, an extension arm pivoted on the forwardly extending portion oi the plate and normally projecting horizontally into the path of movement of the line spacing lever, said extension arm being movable to a vertical position out of path of movement Vof the line spacing lever and in such position forming a handle whereby the pivot plate and its arcuate arm may be moved manually independent of the spacing lever,
able thereon, mechanism for shifting the bar on the plate, a exible connection for actuttt a copy holder plate, an indicator bar movating the said mechanism, and a clip adjusti able on .the arcuate arm and to which the said iexible connection is secured, all for fthe purpose described.
6. In a copy holder for typewriters, the combination of a copy holder plate, an indicator bar movablethereon, a rack bar car. ried by the copy holder plate, mechanism-for shifting the vindicator bar onthe plate and including a casing slidable along one edge of the copy holder plate and to which the iindicator baru is attached, a gear wheel mounted in the casingy and in engagement with thev rack bar, a ratchet wheel rigid with the said gear wheel, a yoke pivotally mounted "in the casing, a lever including a horizontal arm pivotally connected at its inner end to the yoke and having a depending spur held by gravity in connection with the ratchet wheel, and an outer depending arm provided with a finger' piece at its lower end, and a flexible connection leading to said yoke for actuating the said mechanism, all for the purpose described.
7. Ina copy holder attachment for typewriters, the combination with acopy holder plate having a rack bar, anindicator bar movable'on the copy holder plate, .mechanism for shifting the arm on the plate including a casing slidably disposed on one edge of the copy holder plate, a gear wheel mounted in the casing and engaging the rack bar, av ratchet wheel rigid with the gear wheel, a yoke pivotally mounted in the casing .and having a side extension provided with a bent extremity arranged to en-v vgage'the ratchet wheel when the yoke is moved to the limit of its stroke, a lever pivotally mounted at its inner end to the yoke and having a depending spur in engagement with the ratchet wheel to form a pawl, and a flexible connection leading to said yoke for actuating the said mechanism, all for the purpose described.
8. In a copy holder attachment for typewriters, the combination of a copy holder plate, an indicator bar movable on the said plate, a mechanism for shifting the indicator "bar including a plate having a twisted eX- tension forming a horizontal supporting arm and provided with an end clampfa flexible connection for actuating the said iis shifting mechanism, and a flexible sheath in which said connection operates, engaged at one end in the said end clamp of the supporting arm, all for the purpose described.
9. In a copy holder attachment for typewriters, the combination of a copy holder plate having a rack bar, a line indicating bar movable on the plate, mechanism for shiftin the said bar and including a casing slic ably mounted upon one edge of the copy holder plate, a gear wheel mounted in the casing and in engagement with the rack bar, a yoke pivotally mounted in the casing, a ratchet wheel rigid with the gear Wheel, a lever pivoted at its inner end on the yoke and havinga depending spur forminf a pawl and in engagement with the rate iet wheel, said lever having an outer depending arm provided with a linger piece at its lower end, a pair of spring controlled dogs pivoted in the casing and respectivelyl engaging the rack bar and the gear wheel in order to lock the operating parts between operative movements thereof, means whereby toefect a simultaneous disengagement of both of the said dogs by upward movement of the lever to release its spur from the ratchet wheel, whereby to permit of manual adjustment of the casing, and a fieXible connection leading to said yoke for actuating the said mechanism, all for the purpose described.
10. In a copy holder attachment for typewriters, the combination of a copy holder plate having arack bar, an indicator bar movable on the copy holder plate, mechanism for shifting the indicator bar including a easing slidably mounted upon one edge of the copy holder plate, a gear Wheel mounted in the casing and in engagement with the rack bar, a ratchet wheel rigid with the gear wheel, a yoke pivoted in the casing, a lever pivoted at its inner end to the yoke and having a depending spur in engagement with the ratchet wheel, a pair of dogs pivoted in the casing and respectively engaging the rack bar and the gear wheel in order to lock the `operating parts against accidental displacement and having relatively engaging lugs whereby to effect their simultaneous disengagement, one of said dogs having a lateral projection extending above the lever whereby to move the dogs out of engagement with the gear Wheel and rack bar when the lever is raised to disengage its pawl from the ratchet' wheel, and a flexible connection leading to said yoke for actuating the said mechanism, all for the purpose described.
