Be it known that I, JOHN B. F nnonowroz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful improvements in Awnings, of which the following is a specification.

The general object of this invention is to effect the winding and unwinding of an awning upon a roller when the awning is being raised or lowered, and thereby prolong the life of the awning and retain the efficiency of the fabric forming a part there` of. And to these ends the invention consists of the details of construction set forth in the following specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention in operation.

Fig. 2 is a detail vertical sectional view showing the roller and the means for actuating the same.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modified form of the device.

As shown in the drawings the invention consists of the awning body 5, the awning receiving roller 6, the actuating roller 7, and the actuating means 8.

The awning body is formed of the usual material, such as canvas or the like, and may be of any length desired and of a width corresponding to that of the window. It will be readily seen that upon the length of the body will depend the length of the brackets or arms 9, which are pivoted at 9 to the window frame as shown. The arms may be formed of any material and are connected at their outer ends by a cross-piece 10, to which is secured the end of the body 5.

In order to carry the rollers 6 and 7, brackets 11-11 are provided of any suitable material, and are adapted to be secured by the screws 12 to the window-frame or such suitable support.

The roller 6 may be made of wood or metal, and is preferably provided with re` duced ends which are journaled within the brackets 13 and by virtue of providing reduced ends, shoulders are obviously pro` vided, and these shoulders bear against Lthe brackets and so retain the brackets and roller in fixed relation. Spaced from either end thereof, the roller is provided with integral annular shoulders lf-li, which co- *oper-ate to form a suitable spool whereon is wound the body of the awning 5, when the roller is rotated, and it will be obvious that these shoulders operate to protect the edges of the body when the same is wound on the roller. The roller is provided at one end with a gear or pinion 15 meshing with an` other gear 16, secured to the roller 7; this roller 7 is journaled in the brackets 11, and by virtue of the gears meshing with each other, the rollers are adapted to rotate in correlation.

The roller 7 is adapted to rotate the roller 6 as before mentioned, and for the purpose of operating the roller 7, straps or other flexible elements 17 and 18 are carried thereon. The roller 7 is provided with a plurality of spaced annular shoulders 7 which coperate to form spools for the straps as shown.

lt will be noted that the straps are wound on the roller in reverse directions, and are positioned so that upon pulling the strap 17 the awning is raised, and upon pulling the strap 18 the awning is lowered. lt will also be seen that as one strap is being unwound the other strap is being wound, and thereby the straps are always in operative position; and by virtue of the arms 9 being pivoted as shown at 9, they are adapted to swing upwardly as the awning is raised. As shown, a guide plate 19 is provided which has suitable slots 2020, so that the straps may depend in alinement with each other, and thereby be in ready position for operation. -As shown in Fig. 2, a suitable cover 21 is disposed over the rollers and thus protects the rolled up awning from the weather.

The modilied form shown in Fig. 3, is provided with only one roller 21, which is journaled in the brackets 22 and 23, and is provided at one end with the annular shoulders 24; which form spools similar to those on the roller 7 in Fig. 1. Wound around these spools are the straps 25 and 26, which are wound oppositely and operate in similar manner to the straps in Fig. 1. It will be seen in Fig. 3 that the bracket 22 is provided with a forwardly extending plate 27, which is provided with slots 28-28 for the purpose of forming guideways .for the straps.
