One of the features of the invention is the provision of a castingcapable of horizontal oscillation, and in which casting a shaft is mounted having a crank arm at one end and the vertical revoluble beam at the other end there being a link connecting said crank arm, and adjustably connecting a segmental gear, which in turn operates a rack, to which the pump rod is connected. By virtue of the adjustable connection of the link to the segmental gear, a longer or shorter stroke may be imparted to the pump rod, according to the different depths of wells and the like.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view of the improved gear mechanism constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in elevation, showing the blade of the revoluble beam adjusted in other positions, and showing the link connected to the segment gear in another position.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a portion of the tower of a windmill, which comprises the standards or posts 2, which are secured at 3 to the member 4, in which the sleeve or bearing 5 rotates. The sleeve Specification of Letters Patent.

or bearing 5 is carried by the casting 6 having a turn table 7. The turn table 7 is mounted upon anti-frictional members 8, which are located between the turn table and the member 4, so that the turn table will oscillate horizontally easily. Rising upwardly from the side of the turn table is a lug or pin 9, on which an elbow 10 is mounted. Threaded at 11 in one of the tubular arms of the elbow is a laterally extending rod 12, to which, as shown a tail vane 13 is secured by the straps 14 and bolts or screws 15. A set screw 16 is designed to be adjusted to bite into the threads of the rod 12 to prevent the same from turning. it rod or wire 17 connects to the casting 6 and to the rod 12, thereby preventing the same from sagging. Connected at 18 to opposite sides of the rod 12 are the ends of the coil springs 19, which coil springs extend toward the casting 6 and at angles upon opposite sides of the rod 12, and have their other ends in turn connected at 20 to the casting 6, so as to hold the vane and the rod 12 yieldably and laterally with relation to the casting. The casting 6 is provided with a pair of upwardly extending arms 21 and 22, and mounted in a bearing 23 of the arm 21 is a shaft 24, one end of which has a sleeve 25, in which the beam 26 is secured adjustably, as shown at 27, and is designed to rotate or move with the shaft 24. The other end of the shaft 24 has a crank arm 28. Mounted upon the stub shaft or pin 30 is a segmental gear 31, the teeth of which mesh with the teeth of the rack 33. This rack in cross section is rectangular, and extends through the casting and the sleeve or bearing 5, in order to be reciprocated in the casing and said sleeve, and while reciprocating it rotates with the casting and said sleeve. The segmental gear 31 has a plurality of apertures 34, through any one of which a suitable bolt or the like 35 extends, for adjustably connecting one end of the link 36 to the segmental gear. The other end of the link 36 is pivotally connected at 37 to the arm 28 of the shaft 24, so that when the shaft 24 rotates, the crank arm will impart movement to the link 36, which in turn will rock the segment gear on its ivot. The segmental gear when rocked or oscillated, and owing to being in mesh with the rack 33, will impart a vertical reciprocatory movement to the rack and the pump rod. By adjusting the link 36 with relation to the segmental gear, a longer or greater or shorter movement will be im parted to the gear, thereby increasingor decreasing the stroke of the rack andthe pump rod, according to the different depth of wells. Carried by the end portion of the revoluble beam 26 are blades 39, which are adjustable upon the beam, by loosening and tightening the straps 40, which are secured at 41 upon the blades 39.
