BOILER-TUBE FIERRULE.
Application filed December 28, 1916.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. FINNIGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and btate of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Boiler-Tube Ferrule, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to boiler tube ferrules, and aims to provide novel and improved yet extremely simple and efficient means for securing a boiler tube ferrule in place within the boiler sheet, to prevent the inward or rotary displacement of the ferrule, which if it occurs causes a leakage.
With the foregoing and other objects' in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can -be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a face view of a boiler sheet illustrating the ferrule in place, portions being broken away and shown in section.
Fig. 2 is an4 enlarged sectional detail taken on the line 2-2 of F ig. 1 illustrating the ferrule and boiler tube in place.
The drawing illustrates the boiler sheet 1 having the circular opening 2 in which a ferrule 3 of copper or other suitable material is fitted, to snugly receive the boiler tube 11 which has its end beaded, as at 5, to overlap the outer surface of the sheet 1 for securing the tube in place and preventing leakage.
In carrying out the invention, before the ferrule 3 is applied in the opening 2, the sheet 1 is provided with any suitable number, preferably four equi-distant chamfered arcuate notches or indentations 6 in the outer edge formed by the opening 2, and after the Speccaton of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 139,396.
ferrule is slipped into place, it is felled or otherwise worked into the notches G to provide the arcuate lips 7, which in fitting in said notches will prevent the inward movement of the ferrule or the rotary movement thereof. The portions 7 of the ferrule are flush with the face of the plate and do not interfere with the beading of the tube 4, but are of advantage since they prevent the slipping or displacement ol the ferrule, thereby giving longer service and eliminating repairs. Furthermore, the ferrule has a holding power superior to ferrules which are simply litted in the boiler sheet openings in the ordinary manner'. The present invention is extremely simple, but nevertheless is thoroughly efficient in practice.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A boiler tube sheet having an opening and a notch in the edge formed by said opening, and a boiler tube-receiving ferrule fitted in said opening and having a portion worked snugly into said notch flush with the face of the plate.
2. A boiler sheet having an opening and notches in the outer edge formed by said opening, and a boiler tube-receiving ferrule fitted in said opening, the outer edge of said ferrule having portions worked snugly into said notches flush with the face of the plate.
3. A boiler sheet having a circular open ing and arcuate chamfered notches in the outer edge formed by said opening, and a boiler tube-receiving ferrule fitted in said opening, the outer edge of said ferrule having arcuate lips fitting snugly within said notches flush with the face of the plate.
In testimony that I claim theforegoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN JOSEPH FINNIGAN.
