ELECTRIC SOCKET. APPLICATION FILED NOV. fi, l 9!5- 1,247,820. Patented Nov. 27, 19m
INVENTOR' fyw Wi UNITED sTArEs PATENT oFFIoE;
DAVID D. GORDON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS,
ASSIGNOR TO THE Y OST ELECTRIC MANU- 5 FACTURING COMPANY, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
ELECTRIC SOCKET.
Patented not. 2,7, 1917.
Application filed November 6, 1915. Serial No. 60,045.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID D. GORDON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Electric declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of'the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
- broader aspect, it is capable of: embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in.which, I Y
Figure 1 a centrallongitudinal section of a socket of the brass-shell key type em- ..bodying my invention. Fig.2 is a different "longitudinal section of the socket with the cap arts removed and with parts'in full, and ig; 3 is-a side elevationof the socket with arts brokenaw'ay.
' Re erring to the drawings, nate the base and cap parts, respectively, the insulating body) 4 designate the respectively, i p10 ed in '.certain types-of sockets, This she I, however, forms no part of the present invention and. maybe eliminated from the 1 and 2 desigody and cap portions,
socket without departing from the spirit'of Socket; and I do hereby of the socket, and 3 and of the shell customarily em as is .well understood 'inthe,
customary center and side; contacts.
her (not shown),- are secured to the outer end of the basepart 1 of the insulating body and-are deslgnated 5 and 6, respectively. The side contact 6 is of the customary screw shell form and is provided in one side there-- of with an opening 7 which extends outward from its inner end and is for .the purpose hereinafter described.
- The base and cap parts I and 2 of the insulat ng body cooperate, in the present instance, to form a closed, or insulatingly closed, chamber 8 in which the terminal blndlng posts and switch mechanism, if such mechanism is employed, are preferably disposed. The lead wires 9 are intended to extend through registering openings 10 in the cap parts 2-and 4 of the insulating body and shell and are connected by bmding screws 11, one only of which is shown, to respectlve contact plates 12 and 13 secured withln the chamber 8 to the nner side of the cap 2. The contact plate 12 has a conductor finger 14 projecting therefrom lengthwise of the socket and in position to make contact with a conductor finger 15 secured to the insulating base part 1 within the chamber 8. The con uctor finger 15 is adapted, in the present instance, to have electricaloonnection with the center contact 5 of the socket through the medium of a bridging switch member 16 of any suitable form, which is operable to make and break contact with the contacts 17 and, 18, the former of Which' forms a part of or has electrical connection with the finger 15, while the latter forms a part of or has electrical connection with the center' contact 5. .If a switch is provided .to
formthe electricalconnection -between the contact finger 15 andcenter contact 5, as in the present illustration, such swltch may be either of the key or pull-chain type and. of any suitable construction, As the-form of switch shown is merely for illustrative purposes and forms no part of the invention, it will not be specifically described.
rojectin'g therefrom lengthw1se of the understood that-the screwing o an insulating sleeve which v as indicated at 21, which threads register with-and form continuations of the threads in the screw shell 6 so thata lamp or other connecting member, when screwed into the 5 shell 6, has threaded connection with the finger 19 and prevents a removal of the cap part 2 and a withdrawal. of the fingerlQ from the assembled position shown in Figs.
1 and 3. The threaded end. portion of the 10 finger 19 is preferably sprung slightly in ward with respect to the screw shell wall so as to insure a perfect electrical contact between said finger and the side contact-"of the plug or other attachment. It, will be other attachment into I the shell the threaded end portion of the ward into circular register wi walls. of the shell opening 7 22.61 g
is disposed between the shell part 3 and screw shello, and ay-be integral with'or made in'a separate piece from the insulating body base 1. v
It-is evident that the interengaging of the conductor finger 19 with an attachment plug,
or other device which isinse'rted into the screw shell 6,"" cau'ses a firmer looking together of. the base and cap parts 1 and 2 of the in sulating body of the socket, thus preventing a removal of the base part 1 from opera tive connectionjwith the cap untilthe plug or otherattachment has been removed from the screwshelldgfland also that the screw shell may be eliminated entirely and the plug or other attachment, when inserted into thesoc'ket, engaged alone to the finger 19.
I wish it understood that the present embodiment of my invention is merely for illustrative purposes-and that the invention is not 40 .1ir nited to the particular arrangement and construction of parts shown but, is capable of numerous modifications without departing from the spirit of the claims, I
Having'thu's described my invention, what {5 ,1 clam as new, and desire't'o secure by Letters Patent, is,-
7-1. In an 'electrlc socket, an insulating body having separable base and capmembers, .a screw shelland a center contact car- 501 ried by said base member, terminal binding means carried by said cap-member and having separable electrical connection with said center contact,.' and a second terminal binding means carried byzsaid cap memberand having a part projecting therefrom through a portion of said base memberand into position to make side contact with an attach-' mentscrewed into said shell. 2.'In an electric socket, an insulating body having separable base. and cap members, a center-contact carriedbysaid base ,nlembenriterminal binding means carried by said cap member and having separable elecftri'cal connection with said center contact 5 and -a 'asecond terminal bindmg means and a conductor finger both-carried. by said cap member 1n-electr1cal connectio said finger adapted to project through a part of said basemember-and to coact Wltl the side con-f tact of an attachment device, when inserted into the socket, toclose the electric circuit and to secure the cap and base members in assembled position. l
