W. GJUST. SPRING DOOR CLOSER. ARPucAnoN man AuG.21,191s.

INVENTOR ATTORNEY WILLIAM Gr. JUST, 0F BGYID, MINNESOTLA.
SPRING DOOR-GLGSER.
Application A'filed August 21, 1916.
T0 all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM fG. `J-Us'i, a citizen of the 'United States, residing at Boyd, in the county of Lac qui Parle and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new vand useful Improvements -in Spring Dooi'eClosers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to -a spring door closer and has for its object to provide a simple, strong, inconspicuous and cheap device for application to doors, gatesand like hinged parts for automatically closing them after the same have 'been swung open to permit a person to pass through.
Another obj ect of the invention is to provide a spring door closer which may be made almost entirely of sheet metal, the various parts being connected together by bolts and rivets. In connection with these sheet metal parts are two coil springs for providing the pro-per resilient means necessary for closing the door.
With the above as its principal objects and other objects which will hereinafter be mentioned in detail, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the appended claimsand illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a door and door frame with the spring closing device applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the door closer in position on the door and door frame, the latter parts being shown in section with the door fully closed.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the door partly open, and
Fig. 4 is a view of a detail of the invention.
In the drawings, 10 indicates a door frame and 11 the door hinged thereto as at 12.
Fastened to the door frame 10 by screws or otherwise is a rectangular or other shaped plate 13 preferably made of sheet metal, near one edge of which is riveted or otherwise secured a bracket 14 having two outwardly projectingarms 15 perforated to receive a hinge bolt or pin 16. Pivotally supported at one end on the hinge pin 16 is a horizontal arm 17 here shown as made of sheet metal of channel shape, the upper and lover .flanges 18 of which .Open towel-fl the Specification of Letters Patent.

door to prevent a smooth unbroken outer surface as at 19. jThe length of the arm 17 may vary to suit conditions but near its free swinging end `the upper and lower flanges 18 are rcut as in Figs. 2 and 3 andthe arm bent as `shown at 20, the free end 21 inclining toward the door and carrying at its eX- tremity on a vertical pin 22 a roller 23. The flanges 18 at the 'bend 2O ofthe arm 17 overlap as shown and may be connected together by rivets for the purpose of increasing the stiffness of said arm.
F astened to the door 11 by `screws or bolts and in line with the arm 17 is a loop 24 preferably lmade of two strips of sheet metal connected together at their ends, one .of said strips `25 being perfectlystraight while the other strip v26 is bent outwardly between its ends to forma long slot 2.7 in which the roller23 is adapted to travel.
Near the roller 23 but without or exterior to the loop 24 a vertical pin 28 is secured to the flanges 18 of the arm 17, to which pin is connected one end of each of two spiral springs 29, the opposite ends of said springs being fastened to loops 30 formed on the plate 13. These loops 30 when the plate is made of sheet metal may be formed by cutting tongues in the plate and bending them outwardly as shown in Fig. 4.
The springs 29 are at all times under tension and tend to swing the arm 17 inwardly against the door and so cause the door to close. INhen the door is swung open the arm 17 swinging about the hinge pin 16 as an aXis puts the springs 29 under increased tension because of their attachment to the plate 13 in front of said hinge pin. This increased tension serves to store up power for the purpose of returning the door to closed position when released, the roller 23 moving freely in the slot 27 of the loop 24.
It will be understood that the door closer hereinabove described as being made of sheet metal may if preferred be made of cast metal or certain parts be cast and other parts be made of sheet metal. For the sake of simplicity and cheapness the whole device with the exception of the springs has been shown and described as formed of sheet metal.
What I claim is 1. A spring door closer comprising a base plate fixed -to the frame of thedocr, an arm pivotally mounted on the hase plate and constructed of channel iron having its side flanges disposed in a. horizontal plane, one end of the said channel iron being bent at an angle, the said llanges being cut and overlapped, the said overlapped portions being riveted or otherwise fastened together whereby the eXtreme terminal of the said arm is disposed at an angle with respect to the main portion of the arm, means mounted on the end of the said angularly bent portion to slidably engage the door, the latter being provided with an elongated opening for the reception of the said means, and tension springs fixed to the angularly bent portion of the arm and to the said base plate.
l 2.l A spring door closer comprising a base plate constructed of a substantially rectangular piece having its edges provided with incisions, the incised portions being bent to form loops, an arm pivotally mounted on the plate and constructed of channel iron having its free ends bent at an angle, the flanges of the channel ironbeing out and overlapped and secured together, tension springs engaged by the said loop and fastened to the said angularly bent portion of the channel iron, an elongated loop mounted on the door and a roller carried by the said Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
iron having its free ends bent at an angle, Y
the flanges of the channel iron being cut and overlapped and secured together, ten-A sion springs engaged by the said loop and fastened to the said angularly bent portion of the channel iron, an elongated Aloop mounted on the door and a roller carried by the said angularly bent end of the arm and received in the said loop, the terminals ofY the flanges of the channel iron being disposed on the opposite side of the said loop,
and having the said roller mounted therebetween.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence ot tivo Witnesses.
