To all whom 'it may concern;

Be it lrnown that I, SIGMUND Nmnnnnneen, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in a protecting or reinforcing device designed for use primarily in connection with neglige shirts of sill; orV other thin or delicate material.

It is thought to be generally known that shirts of the character mentioned wear out with greatest rapidity around the collar band, or where the lower edge of the collar contacts with4 the body of the shirt. The delicate material of which the body of thcJ shirt is formed, is unable to withstand the wear the lower edge of the collar, and consequently this portion of the shirt wears out long before the remaining parts of the shirt, thus necessitating discarding ofthe shirt although the portions of the shirt eX- cept that with which the lower edge of the collar contacts, are practically new and show no signs of wear.`

It is the object of this invention to provide a reinforcing device to protect the shirt at the place of registration therewith of the lower edge of the collar, and thus to prevent wear upon the shirt at this point, with the result of materially extending the life of the shirt.

A further object is the production of a device as mentioned which, in addition to serving as a means of bearing the burden of the wear of the lower edge of the collar upon the shirt will, at the same time, serve as a stifening or reinforcing means for the collar band, the dual function of the device resulting in a simplified construction and one which is, at the same time, eective and well adapted for the purpose.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

With these objects in view, the invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

T he invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specication, and in which,

Figs. 2 and 3 are front and rear views of a conventional neglige shirt equipped with a reinforcing member embodying the invention, and

Fig. 4: is an enlarged vertical section through the collar band of the shirt and the adjacent portion of the shirt body, showing the arrangement of the reinforcing member in connection therewith.

The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawings, comprisesI a comparatively narrow elongated member 1 formed of any suitable, durable fabric, vthe fabric, for reasons which will be hereinafter set forth, being cut on the bias, as seen in Fig. 1. In the installation of the device in the collar band of a shirt, the longitudinal edge portion 2 of the member 1 4is inserted between the inner and outer walls 8 and t respectively of the collar band, being secured to said parts by lines of stitching 5 and 6. Said lines'of stitching are used at the present time in shirt constructions, the

stitching 5 securing together the layers of Y material of which the collar band is formed adjacent the upper edges of the same, andv the stitching 6 securing said layers together adjacent their lower edges, and in addition serving also as a means of connection kof the collar band with the body 7 of the shirt.

The arrangement is such that the longi-l tudinal edge portion V2 of the member 1 projects from the collar band, the same being secured to the bodj7 7 of the shirt by a line of stitching 8, which is arranged adjacent the outer edge of portion 2.. The portion 2 is intended to lie flat uponthe body of the shirt, conforming exactly with the contour thereof, adjacent the collar band. Through the cutting of the material, of which the member 1 is formed, on the bias, it is possible to Hare or stretch the portion 2 so as to adapt the same to conform with the formation' of the shirt body, thereby eliminating any wrinkling, puckering or unevenness in the body of the shirt such as would otherwise result were the member 1 not cut on the bias, and therefore not adapted to be stretched or flared at the edge portion 2 thereof. Also, with thearrangement set forth, wherein the portion 2 of the member 1 projects into the collar band the full height and length thereof, or so as to be eoextensive therewith, said guards against the portion of The sale of a portion 2 serves the function of a stiffening agent, avoidingthe necessity of an additional member which is employed at the present time in collar bands for this purpose. By forming the stiffening agent of the collar and the portion 2 integrally, as disclosed, the necessity of fastening, as by stitching, the inner edge of the portion 2 is eliminated, this edge of the portion Q being secured by the stitching 6 which kis employed in collar band constructions at present, thereby providing a construction which, to this extent, is no more complicated than that in use at the present time in collar band constructions, while, at the same time, a construction is provided which affords a fastening for the protecting or reinforcing' portion 2.

W ith a construction as described, it will b-e seen that when a collar, as shown at 9, is attached to and Worn in connection with. the collar band, the portion 2 will be positioned for registration with the lower edge of the collar and thus serve as a protection for 'the body of the shirt, preventing wear upon the latter. rEhe portion 2 being very narrow, the same is not noticeable, as the same is practically concealed by the collar. Als-o, in order to )revent the reinforcing member being noticed, the ends 10 of the portion 2 are offset and rounded so that the same terminate a distance from the front Opening of the shirt, or at the points where the lower edges of the collar curve upwardly at the opening or front of the collar, the arrangement being such that the protecting portion 2" registers with and the lower edge of the collar which otherwise would Contact with the body of the shirt, but terminates at the front of the shirt so as to not cover that portion of the shirt which needs no protection, and which is exposed to view when the collar is worn.

collar b and, with a reinforc- Cepiea et this patent, may be obtained for five een@ Gell, by addressing the Weshzwanef" I Y mg member already connected therewith, is of special advantage to one desiring to attach the same to a shirt body already in use inasmuch as the fastening of the reinforcing member in the collar band positively insures its proper positioning in connection with the 'shirt when the collar band is attached, thereby eliminating error in positioning the protecting portion 2 upon the shirt as might readily be the case when the portion 2 is separate from the collar band. The proper positioning of the protecting portion 2 upon the shirt is very important inasmuch as unless the same is properly positioned, one end or the other of the protecting member will be exposed to view when the shirt is in use, and the other end of said protecting member will not afford protection for the entire length of the lower edge of the collar.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of theappended claim.

Having described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

The combination with an outer shirt. comprising a shirt body and a collar band. of a comparatively narrow elongated reinforc ing member having alongitudinal edgeportion4 thereof secured in said collar band. coextensive in length therewith and forming a stiening agent therefor, and having the;

opposite longitudinal edge portion thereof projecting from the base of said collar band and secured to the shirt body, said last mentioned portion being of less length'than the collar band and having rounded ends, sube stantially as described'. 1
