Be it known that I, MATHEW RODNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greene, in the county of Butler and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stock-VJaterers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stock waterers and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide means for maintaining the supply pipe, the controlling valve and a crank of a stock waterer at a temperature above freezing during cold weather and to keep the water in a palatable condition for the animals which drink at the trough.
lVith this object in view the waterer comprises a tank or trough having a supply pipe leading therein with a valve fixture applied A float controlled valve is adapted to open and close against the valve fixture and controls the admission of the water from the supply pipe to the tank 0 trough. The said tank or trough is mounted upon a casing which is suitably lined with asbestos and which is provided with openings for the admission of air. A partition is located in the said casing and a heater preferably in the form of an oil lamp is positioned in the lower portion of the easing and is arranged to discharge heated air through the opening in the partition immediately below the tank or trough. The said casing is provided at the sides and ends of the tank or trough with openings through which the heated air may escape thus pre serving a percolation of air through the easing and about the lower portion of the tank or trough.

The stock waterer comprises a metallic tank or trough 1 having a water supply pipe 2 leading into the same. A valve fitting 3 is applied to the end of the pipe 2 and a valve stem at is movably mounted therein. A valve member 5 is mounted upon the said stem and Specification of Letters Patent.

is adapted to close against the fitting 3 whereby the low of water into the tank is controlled. Lugs 6 are provided upon the valve fitting 3 and an arm 7 is pivoted at a point 8 between the said lugs 6. The arm 7 is provided with a laterally disposed extension 9 having an opening 10 adapted to receive a pin 11 whereby the said extension is connected with the stem 1- when the sternis in a horizontal position. The said arm 7 is further provided with an opening 12- which is adapted to receive the said pin whereby the said arm may be connected with the stem 4 when the said stem is in a vertical position. The centers of the openings 10 and 12 are located in planes which intersect each other approximately at a right angle at the center of the opening 8. A float 13 is mounted at the free end of the arm 7..
It will be observed that the arm 7 may be adjusted and turned so that it may operate in conjunction with the valve stem 4 whether the said valve stem is in a horizontal position or in a vertical position. Thus the supply pipe may be led into the tank through the bottom thereof or through the side thereof as desired. A guard 14 is mounted upon the tank 1 and extends over the float 13 andprevents the animals from coming in contact with the float and interfering with the operation thereof and also partitions the tank so that two animals may drink at the same time, each animal having access to the water at one side of the guard 14. The tank 1 is mounted in the upper end of a metallic casing 15 which is in turn provided with an asbestos or other suitable lining 16. A partition 17 is disposed horizontally across the casing 15 in a plane spaced below the bottom of the tank 1 and the said partition is provided at an intermediate point with an opening 18. An oil lamp 19 may be positioned in the lower portion of the casing 15 with its chimney arranged to discharge through the opening 18 in the partition 17.
The casing 15 is provided at its lower portion, at points below the partition 17. with openings 20 over which are located hoods 21. The said casing 15 is further provided at its sides and ends and above the partition 17, withopenings 22 over which are located hoods23. In cold weather the lighted lamp 19 is placed in position in the lower portion of the casing 15 and the heat and products of combustion from the said lamp pass up through the opening 18 into the upper portion of the casing 15 and around the bottom sides and ends of the tank 1 and up and out through the openings 22. At the sametime cold air is drawn into the lower portion of the casing 15 through the openings 20. Thus a circulation of air is maintained in the casing and as the cold air comes in contact With the lamp it is heated. and discharged up through the opening in the partition against the tank. Thus the heated air maintains the tank at a comparatively high degree or" temperature and prevents the contents of the tank or the supply pipe and the valve mechanism from freezing.
By referring to Fig. l of the drawing it will be observed that the opening 18 is located between the sides of the guard and that the side portions of the said guard are located at the opposite sides of the valve fitting 3. Therefore the said guard will nee-ayes retain the heat which comes from the lamp about the valve and prevent the same from freezing in cold Weather.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A stock Waterer comprising a casing, means for heating the same, a tank located in the casing, a supply pipe entering the tank, a valve member located in the supply pipe a valve arranged to control the passageway through the valve member and located in the tank, a guard mounted on the tank and having side portions which enter the tank and lie at the epposite sides of the valve said guard also being located directly above the heating means and adapted to retain heat about the valve.
