ANTHONY GIARDINO, 0F BROCKTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
HANDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented N ov. 13, 1917.
Application led June 13, 1916. Serial No. 103,428.
To all whom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, ANTHONY GIARDINO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain useful Improvements in Handles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements in handles, one object of the invention being the provision of a Collapsible handle for attachment to bundles and the like, and which may be readily placed in the vest pocket when not in use, and which is provided with swingingly mounted means that are normally concealed for engagement with the bundle fastener.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective View of the complete device with the various elements thereof extended.
Fig. 2 is a perspective of all of the elemeilits concealed and the members collapsed, anc
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through one of the hand grip forming members showing the construction of one of the hooks.
VReferring to the drawings, the numerals 10 and 11 designate the cylindrical members, each one of which is slotted as at 12 and 13 for the reception of the coupling member 14 which is pivotally connected in place by means of the pins 15. This coupling member is acted upon by the springs 16 to normally hold the parts either extended or collapsed as illustrated.
Each member is further provided with the socket or recess 17 in which is mounted the spring 18 to abut the shouldered or cam end 19 mounted for swinging movement u on the pin 20.
Copies of this patent may he obtainedlor ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
Detachably connected to the pivoted cam end is a hook 22 having the spring catch 23 by means of which the accidental releasing of the cord or other means connected to the hook is prevented.
The member 11 is provided with the longitudinal bore 36 which has slidably mounted therein the reduced shank 37 of the button hook 38.
From the foregoing description, it is evident that with a device of this character, a very handy tool is provided which can be carried in the vest pocket when collapsed, and which can be readily extended to permit the use of the bundle engaging hooks for the purpose of holding any package or article.
What I claim as new is In combination, a pair of similarly shaped cylindrical members, one end of each of said members being slotted and having the edges facing the slots curved, a coupling bar projecting into the said slots, a flat spring projecting longitudinally in each slot and secured in the back wall thereof, pivot pins passing through the slotted ends of said members and through the opposite ends of said coupling bar and holding the inner edge of said bar in contact with the two springs and also causing the curved edges of said members to abut and allowing one member to swing down to a substantially parallel position opposite the other member, and a hook carried by each member at its opposite end, said flat springs being tensioned so as to rise against the opposite ends of said coupling bar as one of the members is swung opposite the other member.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature.
ANTHONY GIARDINO.
