' WASHING-MACHINE;
Application fi1ed;3' une 18, .1917. 1 Serial No. 175,495.
T 0 all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, LOUIS J. MIGHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake City, in the county of Calhoun and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVashing-Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in washing machines The object of the invention is to provide a washing machine of improved construction. strong, durable and easily operated and adapted to wash and rinse thoroughly, the clothes placed therein.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the body of the de vice, Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view, Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view, Fig. 1 is a detail perspective view of the container and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the presser frame.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference characters refer to similar parts, 1 denotes the body of the machine substantially semi-cylindrical in form supported at each end by a pair of legs 2 and inclosed by a cover 3 hingedly attached to the upper margin of the body at 45 a semi-cylindrical container 5 rigidly supported on a shaft 6 axially and removably mounted in bearings 7 at the base of vertical slots 8 radially disposed at 0pposite ends of the body. The shaft 6 is rectangularly upbent at one end and disposed quadrantally and in a plane parallel to the ends of the container thereby providing a handle 9 for the actuation of the device as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. A clothes compressor 10 comprising a series of vertical bars 11 formed integrally with the shaft 6 and disposed oppositely to the handle 9 is rigidly connected to the inner wall of the container. An oblong rectangular cover frame 15 of the length of the interior of the container and rigidly I Specification of Letters Patent.

attached to a shaft 13 adjacent to the squared trunnions 1 1 is adapted to fit removably within the slots 8 and is bent midway of its ends to form sides substantially equivalent in depth to the radius of the container 5 said sides being inclined to each other at an obtuse angle. A series of bars 16 is similarly disposed on each side of the frame 15 here shown as parallel to the shaft 13 and formed integral with the ends 17 of the frame. Braces 18 support the container and prevent lateral displacement.
In operating the machine the required quantity of water is placed in the container 5 after which the clothes to be Washed are placed therein on both sides of the compressor 10. The frame 15 is placed in po sition by slipping the trunnions 14 within the slot 8, the cover 3 is closed and an oscillatory movement is imparted to the container through the medium of the handle 9 forcing the contents of the container alternately against the respective sides of the to the top of said casing, a shaft axially mounted in the casing. a semi-cylindrical container suspended from the shaft, a compressor frame comprising a plurality of vertical slats formed within the container, a second shaft mounted in said casing, an angular cover frame rigidly connected to said second shaft and depending on opposite sides of the compressor frame, said cover frame having a plurality of lateral slats and means for imparting an oscillatory motion to the container.
2. A washing machine comprising a cy' lindrical casing open at the top, a cover hingedly attached thereto, a shaft axially mounted in the casing, a semi-cylindrical container suspended from the shaft and rigidly attached thereto, a normally vertical compressor frame comprising a plurality of vertical slats formed within the container and bisecting said container in the plane of its axis, a second shaft moimted in said easing, an angular cover frame having a affixecl my signature in the presence of two plurallty of lateral slats rlglclly connected wltnesses.
to said second shaft and depenclin on 0 1 posite sides of the compressor fra me, MR1 LOUIS MIGHJJL' 5 means for imparting an oscillatory motion Witnesses:
to the container. L. C. DREESEN, In testimony whereof I have hereunto J. R. DAvIs.
