CIRCUIT-MAKER FOR OSCILLATING FANS.

Be it known that I, GUSTAF OLSON, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Circuit-Makers for Oscillating Fans, of which the following is a specification.

The fan illustrated in the drawings is of a type more Afully described and claimed in my copending application Serial No. 112,090, filed July 29, 1916, but it will be understood that this style of fan is used here merely for the sake of illustration and that the circuit making device is equally suitable to other types of oscillating fans.
^ The fan herein shown comprises blower mechanism 6 pivotall mounted on a shaft or member 7 byk having lugs 8 depending from amotor casing 9 pivotally connected to arms 10 formed on the member 7. The member 7 rotatably supports the blower mechanism 6 on the base or support 11 in such manner that the blower mechanism is free to oscillate back and forth in a horizontal plane under the action of gyratory forces set up by tilting of the blower mecaanism 6 in a vertical plane, as has been more fully described and claimed in a patent of lillai-d M. McEwen, No. 1, 214,198, issued January 30, 1917. The mechanism for tilting the fan comprises a sleeve 12 concentrically journaled with respect to the member 7 and having formed thereon an outwardly disposed annular flange of wavelike form. The flange 13 provides a track 141 with which rollers 15 journaled on the motor casing 9 are adapted to coact during the relative rotation of the sleeve 12 for tilting the blower mechanism. The rotation of the sleeve 12 is caused by a pinion 16 meshing with a rack 17 formed on the periphery of the flange 13 and driven by the fan motor.
kThe circuit making device as applied to the above style of fan comprises three sliprings 18, 19 and 2O mounted on a. member 21 which is secured to the end of the shaft 7 so that the rings are rotatably suspended within an open-sided ring-shaped member 22 in such manner as to be engaged by brushes 23, 2-land 25 respectively, mounted in the sides 26 and 27 of said ring-shaped member 22.
The .ring-shaped member 22 has formed thereon hubs 28 and 29, the former of which is adapted to be seated within the end of the base 11 and secured thereto by a set screw 30, and the latter of which serves as a bearing for the shaft 7 and sleeve 12.
The slip- rings 18, 19 and 20 are formed substantially as shown in Fig. and are arranged in superimposed relation upon an insulating tube 31 which is rigidly secured to the member 21 in the manner shown in Fig. 3. Disks 32 of fiber, mica or other suitable material are interposed between the rings so as to properly insulate them one from another. Bolts 33, 34 and 35 are connected to the rings 18, 19 and 20respectively, by having the heads thereof seated in suitable recesses 32.1. The bolts protrude beyond the lower insulating plate 32 as indica-ted in the figures, and constitute binding posts to which are connected respectively the conductors 36, 37 and 88 leading to the motor of the blower mechanism 6.
The brushes 23, 24e and 25 may be of any of the usual forms, to which are connected in a suitable manner the conductors 39, 40 and #il leading to a connection such as a rheostat la (shown in dotted outline in Fig. l) in the bottom of the support 11.
rIhe hereinbefore described construction and assembly of slip-rings and brushes provides a compact and readily accessible arrangement which is suitable for either alternating or direct current uses. If it is to be used for alternating current, all thre slip-rings and brushes are made use of; whereas if it is to be used for direct current, but two of the slip-rings and brushes are needed.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention has been herein shown and described, it will be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claims.
I claim:
l. In an air circulating device the combination of a support provided with an open sided, ring shaped portion, motordriven blower mechanism,l a shaft carrying said blower mechanism and journaled on said support adjacent to said ring-shaped portion, a member secured to said shaft and rotatably suspended within said ring-shaped portion, electrical contact elements on said ring-shaped portion and said member normally urged into engagement with each other, conductors leading from the contact 4 elements on said member to the motor of said blower mechanism, and other conductors leading from the contact elements on said ringshaped member to a connection on said support.
2. In an air circulating device the combination of a support provided with an open-sided, ring-shaped portion, motordriven blower mechanism, a shaft carrying said blower mechanism and journaled on said support adjacent to said ring-shaped portion, a member secured to said shaft and rotatably suspended within said ring-shaped portion, electrical contact elements on said ring-shaped portion and said member normally urged into engagement with each other, conductors leading from the Contact elements -on said member to the motor of said blower mechanism, other conductors leading from the contact elements on said ring-shaped member to a connection on said support, and detachable plates adapted to cover the open sides of said ring-shaped portion.
3. ln an air circulating device the combination of a support provided with an opensided, ring-shaped portion, motordriven blower mechanism, a shaft carrying said blower mechanism and journaled on said support adjacent to said ring-shaped portion, a member secured to said shaft and rotatably suspended within said ring-shaped portion, slip-rings mounted on said member, brushes mounted in said ring-shaped pon tion and normally urged into contact with the respective slip-rings, conductors leading from said slip-rings to the motor of said blower mechanism, and other conductors leading from said brushes to a connection yon said support.
4. In an air circulating device the combination of a support provided lwith an opensided, ring-shaped portion, motordriven blower mechanism, a shaft carrying` said blower mechanism and journaled on said support adjacent to said ring-shaped portion, a member secured to said shaft and rotatably suspended within said ring-shaped portion, slip-rings mounted on said member, brushes mounted in said ring-shaped por tion and normally urged into contact with the respective slip-rings, conductors leading from said slip-rings to the motor of said blower mechanism, other conductors leading from said brushes to a connection on said support, and detachable plates arranged to cover the open sides of said ring-shaped member.
5. In an air circulating device the combination of a support provided with an open-sided, ring-shaped portion, motordriven blower mechanism, a-shaft carrying said blower mechanism and journaled on said support adjacent to said ring-shaped portion, a member secured to said shaft and rotatably suspended within said ring-shaped portion, three slip-rings arranged on said member in superimposed relation and insulated from each other, a pair of brushes arranged inl one side of said ring-shaped por tion and normally urged into engagement with the upper'and lower slip-rings, a brush mounted on the opposite side of said ringshaped portion and normally urged to engage the intermediate slip-ring, conductors leading from said slip-rings to the'motor of said blower mechanism, and other con ductors leading from said brushes to a connection on said support.
6. In an air circulating device the combination of a support, an open-sided ringshaped member, hubs on opposite sides of said member, one adapted to engage said support for attaching said member thereto and the other serving as a bearing, motordriven blower mechanism, a shaft carrying said blower mechanism and journaled on open sides thereof, conductors leading from said bearing, a plurality of slip-rings insusaid slip-rings to the motor of said blower 10 lated from each other and attached to said mechanism, and other conductors leading shaft so as to be rotatably suspended Within from said brushes to a connection on said said ring-shaped member, brushes on said support. ring-shaped member normally urged into Signed at Chicago this 22d day of July,- engagement with said slip-rings, detachable 1916.
