1,245,284. eci en To all whom it concern:
Be it known that I. JOSEPH H. STANNABD, acitizen of the United States, residing at Columbia, in the county of .Richland and 'State of South Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Draft-Regula tors and. Spark-Arresters, of which the following is aspecification;
This invention relates to steam boilers for engines, and the like, and hasparticular reference to a, combined spark arresterand draft regulator.
' This invention as itsobjects to providea spark arr-ester which will effectively prevent burning ciriders and the like from] being thrown from the boiler orengine and which might result in a disastrous tire; to
provide means 'for obtaining proper draft through ,the" engine and thus. provide an economy in the consumption of coal or other fuel; to provide means for so regulating the draft that the upper hues of the boiler as well; as the lower flues may at all times he employedf and generally-to obtain a lxitl'er,
'rno're equalized and stronger draft through the fire box and fire fines.
Other objects of the invention are to prolong the life of the flucs or other'parts ol the boiler by preventing rapid burning out of the same'due to improper drafts, and to provide means whereby the draft may be easily and quickly regulated. I i The above and other objects of the inven tion are obtained in the structure described in the following specilicati in and illus' trated in the accompanying drawings, and wherein- Y A Figured is a central longitudinal seoJ tional view taken through the front end of a locomotive engine and showing my inven tion appliedthereto, although it is to be uhderstood that my invention applicable for use in engines other than lmwmotives.
Fig. 21s a sectional view taken on line- 2-2; Fig. '1, and
Fig. Bis asectionnl view taken on line M, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, wherein like numerals represent like parts in the several views, 10 designates the Usllal lmllvr having a, front tube sheet ll througluwhich the forward ends ol the fire llur-s 'lz project.

the box havingthe usual front door 14 whereby access to the interior of the boiler or engine may be had. pipe 15 leads from the upper 1ler 10 to the engine linder not shown) and the discharge nozz e 16 .is connected to "the exhaust portsthereoff The exhaust steam from the cylinder is discharged through the discharge nozzle 16 into the usual lifting ipe 17 whichis located oentrally beneatli the smoke stack. 18. The
c'allyrelative to the nozzle 16. 2 0 designates a baflleplate connected at its upper end to the tube sheet 11 immediately above the uppermost fire trbe 12 and extendingdownwardly and forwardly of -the smoke box .to' a distance ,approximately onehalf that'between the uppermost and The usual steam. art. of'the lifting pipe is adjustably carried by the brackets 19 so that it maybe adjusted verti- The minimum 20, as shown in the draw- I lugs, is pi ovidcd witha plurality 'of perforations which preferably are about onefourtl'i'inch in diameter, and located about one inch apart, although, of course, the size or exact location of the openings may be varied to' suit-the particular-engine to which my in ventiori is applied. The baflle phtc may be perforated throughout its entire height, but by preference, means for closing some of these perforations when desired, is provided, and while this means may be varied, l-have illustrated the samegas con'iprising a. plurality of strips 23 extends 1 ing transversely of the smoke'bq'x and securcd over the lower end of the balilelplate by means of suitablefnuts 24. 1
(rolled by means of" adamper25 which comprises a flat plate lying upon the upper y outer edge of the table plate and ilida mo able thereon. The tableplate and 11 y 10o With the above arrangement, when; it-is (Tam er are .su ported angleirons Ase-v cures to the sidhs of thesmoke box, ,and I havealso disclosed a bracket 26' which 18 secured at its forward end to the front wall of the smoke box, and whichha's-lts rear end resting on a shoulder of the exhaust nozzle 16. The damper orfplate 25 may be moved forwardly or backwardly' to vary the size of the opening 22, and it may be secured in adjusted osltion 1n any su1table manner, but in tile present instance, I
have shown the damper as having parallel slots 27 which receive suitable'bolts 28 passing through the table plate. By this conshown in the. drawings as damper into desired It is to be 'notedt at' the: table plate 21- structiom' when adjusting the damper, it is merely necessary to remove or loosen the nuts upon said bolts and then slide the osition.
extends forwardly of the smoke box to within la very short distance of the'front wall thereof, so'that the damper. opening 22 in comparison with the length. of the smoke box is relatively very narrow. No depend- .fing obstructions, such as ba'flie plates or the like project downwardly from the table platelfor I have found that obstructions of this sort impair the draft, in
that they shut off the top flues of the boiler. a To prevent cinders and the like from es- -eaping from the. smoke box of 'the engine,
I provide a'screen 29 which may be of any suitable construction, and which 1s extending up wardly and forwardly from the table plate to the front wall of the smokebox, and, of
course this screen or a part thereof may be removable to permit access to the ,interior openings in the baflleTp1ate'2O and the draft opening 22. j ijA -portion of the products of, f combustion are entrained of-the front endof the engine.
Dur'ngthe operation of the engine or boiler, smoke and other products of com bustion are discharged from the fire flues into the lower ortion of the smoke box. Exhaust steam is dischar ed from the ex haust nozzle'16 into the li expansion thereof, a vacuum is created in the upper iortion of the fire box and the products o 1 lower portion of the smoke box through the p in the opening between thelifting pipeand the'table plate; and the remaining portion ofthe products of combustion is. drawn or entrained into the smokepi 'e,due[to the partial vacuum creupper'h alf-of the box; in which a vacuum is maintainedwhen steam as disate'd at t e upper end ofil'the lifting pipe.
By extending the table plate to within; a;- short distan ce of'the front end ofthe smoke d box an 'exten'ded' chamber is provided in the partial Y charged from the exhaust nozzle.
'It will seen that the draft may be com ting pipe'17 and- I due to the pressure of the steam and the.
'c'on'ilmstion are drawn from the.
tending from the-lower e d of ai imam trolled by adjusting or regulating the lifting pipe the amper 25, orthe openmgs through the ing means are dependent on the others, and the adjustment of all of v them should be such "that astrong and equalized draft 1s obtained through all of the fire lines. If it is'found that the upper flues do not draw properly; the damper 25 is moved toward the front of the smoke box so as to make the draftopening 22 smaller, andthus a stronger draft is obtained through the opening 22, resulting in a. strong suction throughthe openings in the baflie plate 20, so that the draft through the various fire flues 1s equalized and the upper as well as the lower -flues are equally employed. On the other .hand, if it is found that thelower flues do not draw properly, the opening 22 is made larger. By properly adjusting the damper 22, a strong draft is-obta'ined which results a in the proper heating of the water within the boiler, proper consumption of the fuel; and, the ellmination to a great extent of burning 'cinders and .the like. Should, how ever any burning cinderspass into the smo e box these are prevented from passing through the smoke stack by means of the draft beneath the bafile plates is uninterrupted, and yet this space is of suflicient length to causevmost of thecinders to fall to the bottom of the smoke box, I
