Be it knownl that I, JAY HUGHES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atkinson, in the county of Holt and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Scrapers; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in a road scraper and has for one ofits objects the .provision of a device of this character, which is especially adapted for removing the dirt from the sides of a road anddepositing the same in the center thereof, which gives the correct grading to each side thereof.
Anotherv object of this invention is the provision of a pair of frames' arranged in parallelism with each other so that the scraping means carried thereby will carry and deposit the dirt from the sides of the road on to the center thereof.
A further object of this invention is to provide means for permitting the frames to be moved toward and from each other as desired, so as to regulate the point of the sides of the `road thatlthe dirt is to be removed from.
A further object of this invention is the provision of diagonally arranged scraper blades on each of the frames for cutting and carrying the dirt from the sides of the road to the center thereof.
A further object of this invention is the provision o f means for raising and lowering the frames for engaging and disengagin'g the scraper blades with the ground and also regulating the 'depth of the cutting action of said blades.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a plurality ofdiagonally arranged colters positioned forwardly of the scraper blades for cutting the ground and trash that may accumulate under the frames.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of' means for raising and lowering the colters with relation to the frames, whereby the cutting action thereof may be regulated.
A further object of vthis invention is to rovide cushioning means between the rames, which will absorb shocks to the Specification of Letters Patent.

Draft chains 10 are connected to the forward ends of the frames 1 and 2 so that the device may be readily connected to a draft power.
A plurality of diagonally arranged-supporting members 11 are secured to the frames 1 and 2 and slidably mounted therein are pairs of hollow supporting rods 12, which have secured to their lower ends, journals 13. The journals 13 are slidably supported in substantially U-shaped brackets 14 carried by the inner and outer side members 3 and e and the longitudinal bracing members 15, which are secured to the diagonally arranged beams -5 and 6. The journals 13 have rotatably mounted therein, shafts 16 on which are mounted, a plurality of colters or cutting disks 17, the colters or cutting disks 17 being spaced apart by blocks 18. The shafts 16 are supported diagonally of the frames and one in front of the other as clearly shown in Fig. 6. 'lhe hollow rods 12 are externally screwthreaded and have threaded thereoaadjusting nuts' '18', whereby the rods may be raised and lowered for regulating the cutting action of the disks. Secured to the upper ends ot' the hollow rods l2 are grease cupsv19 for the purpose of furnishing the journals 13 with lubricant. (oiled springs 20 are mounted upon the rods 12 for normally urging the journals downwardly with relation to the trames 2 and 1, thus it will be seen that by threading the nuts 1S upon the rods l2 in a cldakwise direction, the colters or cutting dslts 17 will be raised.

Each of the rods 22 and 24 have secured thereto, handles 26 a5 for rotating said rods to Wind the cables 23 and 25 thereon for moving the frames 1 and 2 in the direction of each other. Each of the rods and 21 have secured thereto, ratchet gears 27, which are engaged by spring actuated dogs 28 for preventing the rods 22 and 24 from rotating in a reverse direction, whereby the t' 'ames 1 and 2 may he adjusted in relation to each' other and held in any desired adjusted position.

The Vblocks that receive the fastening elements 58 have connected thereto, rods y6.0, which are slidably received within the adjacent block 57 and on which are mounted coiled ksprings 6l for the purpose of cushioningly supporting the block 57 that receives thev fastening elements r58, whereby shock absorbing means is provided' between the frames l an'd 2 and which construction will permit the frames 1 and 2 to be moved toward and from each other as desired.
In operation, a suitable draft power is connected to the chains 50 and the frames l and 2 are adjusted from each other to the desired point so as to make the device operable upon each side of the road and by forward movement of the frames `1 and 2,
the Scrapers cut into the ground and carry the loose dirt to the center of the road. The cutters or colters 18 cut into the ground4 and loosen the same, making it easy for the Scrapers to deposit the loose dirt into the center of the road. j
By rotating the rods 41 the rollers 35 may be moved into engagement with the ground for disengaging the cutters and Scrapers from the ground so that the device may be conveyed from one'point to another in an inoperative state.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minorchanges in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. AA road `scraper comprisinga pair of frames, flexible `means connecting said frames, means connected to said flexible means for movmg said frames toward and from each other, shock absorbing means connecting said frame,` and cutting means carried by said frames.
2. A road scraper comprising a pair of frames, means for connecting said` frames, cutting means carried by said frames,l supporting structures carried by said frames, rods slidably mounted in'said supportino structures, blocks carried by the rods and slidable in the supporting structure, coiled springs interposed between said blocks and frames, cables connected to said blocks, rods journaled'in said frames, a ratchet mechanism carried by said rods, said cables attached to said rods, and handles connected to said rods for rotating said last named rods, and rollers journaled to the first named rods. j
3. A road scraper comprising a pair of framesf means for connecting said frames,
Scrapers carried by said frames, a plurality of rods carried by said frames, shafts journaled to said rods, colters journaled on said shafts, means for raising and lowering the rods to engage and disengage the colterswith the ground.

A road scraper comprising apair of frames,'means for connecting said frames, a plurality of hollow rods carried by said frames, journals -carried by said rods, screwthreads formed on said rods, shafts journaled in the journals, colters journaled on said shafts, adjusting nuts on said rods for raising and lowering said rods, and grease cups carried' by Asaid rods for furnishing the journals with lubricant.
5. A road scraper comprising a pair of lframes, cutting means carried by said frames to form a shock absorber between said frames.
