UNTTED STATE PATENT @FETQE.
CHARLES L. OPPERMAN, OF GALENA, KANSAS.
(BATTING IMPLEMENT.
Application filed. August 25, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. OPPER- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galena, inthe county of Cherokee and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tatting Implements, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to an implement adapted for. use in the method of tatting, for expediting such method.
An important object of the invention is to provide an implement of the above mentioned character, which is extremely simple, inexpensive to manufacture, and convenient in use.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the ordinary method of tatting, the thread is looped about the left hand and the shuttle carried in the right hand. In forming each section or ring of the tatting, the shuttle is passed alternately upon opposite sides of the loop upon the left hand, forming the tatting loops. In each completed section of the tatting, one loop is ordinarily made slightly larger than the others, in or-- der that the thread may be passed therethrough for commencing the second section of the tatting and for connecting the second section with the completed section. As far as I am aware, considerable dificulty is experienced in passing or drawing the thread through the enlarged loop, in starting the next section of the tatting. This necessitates stopping the work, transferring the shuttle from the right hand to the left, picking up a pin in the right hand, passing the thread through the enlarged loop, laying down the pin, transferring the shuttle to the right hand, and continuing the work.
In accordance with my invention, I provide an implement in the form of a preferably hooked or tanged needle, carried by a ring member, which is preferably placed upon the fore-finger of the right hand. with the needle pointing toward the little finger. The implement thus placed upon the forefinger in no way interferes with the manipulation of the shuttle in making each individual tatting. When the tatting is completed, with one enlarged tatting loop, the right hand is turned over forwardly, and the tanged needle passed through the enlarged loop to draw the thread through it,

forming another loop for commencing the second section. During this operation the shuttle is held in the right handand after the loop is formed the Work is continued in the usual manner for completing the next sectlon.
In the accompanying drawings forming a partof this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, I
Figure l is a perspective view of the implement in use, showing it drawing the thread through the tatting loop,
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the implement, carried by the fore-finger of the hand, but not in use,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a needle embodying the invention, and,
F ig. 4 is a similar view of a slightly clifferent form of needle.
As shown in Fig. 3, the implement embodies a finger receiving member or ring 5, to which is rigidly attached by solder or the like, a needle 6, preferably having a hooked or tanged end '2'. Particular attention is called to the fact that the needle is disposed in the plane of the ring 5 and when in use, is adapted to extend transversely of the fingers toward the little finger, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
In Fig. 4, the implement is shown as formed of a single strand of wire. doubled upon itself as shown at 8. providing portions 9, which are longitudinally bent to form a ring or finger receiving member 10. One portion 9 is continued beyond the other portion in the form of a needle 11, having a hook or tanged end 12, as shown.
In use, the ring receiving portion 5 is preferably placed upon the fore-finger of the right hand, with the needle 6 extending transversely across the fingers toward the little finger. The shuttle is held in the right hand while the thread is looped or carried up the left hand, in the usual manner. The shuttle is passed alternately upon the right and left sides of the thread on the left hand, in the usual manner, for completing each section of the tatting, which has one loop a little longer. hen the section is completed the right hand isturned forwardly, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and the needle 6 passed through the enlarged loop, to engage the thread and draw it through for casting a loop for commencing the next section and connecting it with the completed section.
As soon as the loop is drawn through, the needle disengages it and the shuttle being retained in the right hand is again brought into action in a highly convenient manner.
It is to be understood that the forms of invention herewith shown and described are to be taken as preferred examples of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may he resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the sub- 'oined claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. An implement for use in tatting to draw the thread through a loop without transferring the shuttle from the right hand, comprising a finger receiving member adapted to be mounted upon the index fingerof the right hand and having a needle rigidly connected therewith at its upper portion so that the needle extends above and across the fingers in a direction away from the thumb.
2. An implementtor use in tatting to draw the thread through a loop without transferring the shuttle from the right hand, comprising a finger receiving member adapted to be mounted upon the index linger of the right hand and having a needle rigidly connected with its upper portion and distb'opiee at this patent may he obtained tor five cents each,
eea transferring the shuttle from the right hand 7 comprising a ring adapted to he mounted upon the index finger of the right hand and ha ing a needle rigidly secured to its upper portion so that the needle extends above and across the lingers in a direction away from the thumb, said needle being provided at its free end with an upwardly extending tang. l. in implement for use in tatting to draw the thread through the loop, comprising finger-receiving element adapted to be mounted upon the finger of the operator and having a needle-like member rigidly secured at one of its ends thereto and extending outwardly therefrom, said needle-like member being provided with a hook at its free extreinity.
