To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, STEPHEN G. Rooms, a citizen of the United States, residing at Parkersburg, in the county of Wood and State of West Virginia, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a horseshoe and has for one of its objects the provision of a device of this character having means for forming a cushioned shoe which will aid in curing draft animals of sore or infected feet.

Another object of this invention is to provide the shoe with each end bifurcated to receive a wedge shaped rubber for forming cushioned heels to the shoe.

A further object of this invention is to provide detachable heel calks for each end of the shoe which will aid in preventing displacement of the cushioning means.

A further object of this invention is to provide novel means of detachably securing the calks to the shoes.

A still further object of this invention is the provision of a horseshoe of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable, and efiicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.

With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

For a complete understanding of my invention, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a horseshoe, constructed in accordance with my invention;

Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, illustrating the cushioning means;

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the wedge shaped rubber for forming the cushions to the heels;

Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 44; of Fig. 1;

Fig. 5 is a perspective View of one of the calks; and

F 1g. 6 is a fragmentary bottom plan View illustrating the formation of the slots.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a horseshoe having a toe portion 2 and the heel portions 3. The shoe 1 is provided withusual nail openings i for securing the shoe to the draft animals hoof by nails being driven through the openings and into the hoof. The toe portion of the shoe 1 is provided with a dove-tailed groove 5 to receive the dove-tailed portion of a call: 6 which has the beveled spaces 7 providing a toe calk which can be readily removed from the shoe whenever desired. Formed upon the toe portion 2 is the usual upstanding toe clip 8 for engagement with the animals hoo The heel portions 3 of the shoe 1 are each bifurcated to receive a wedge shaped member ,9 constructed from rubber or other. resilient material. The reduced end of the wedge 9 extends sufiiciently far enough to prevent one of the nails which secure the shoe 1 to an animals hoof to pass through for retaining the wedge shaped member 9 within the bifurcated portion of the heels 3. The upper faces of the heel portions are provided with apertures to receive pins 10 which are driven into the wedges 9 for aiding in preventing said wedges from being displaced in the bifurcated ends of the heel portions 3. The lower or bottom spaces of the heel portions 3 are provided with keyhole slots 11 to receive heel calks 12 which will be hereinafter more fully described. The wedges 9 are provided with elongated recesses for sockets 13 which register with the key-hole slots 11, for receiving the inner ends of the heel calks 12.

The heel calks each consist of a shank 14 having oppositely disposed flattened surfaces 15 and have formed upon one of the ends disk 16 of circular formation while at the opposite end is formed a pointed head 17. In applying the heel calks 12, they are inserted within the circular openings of the key-hole slotsll and the flattened faces 15 of the shanks 14 permit the heel calks to be slid in the direction of the ends of the heels or smaller end of the key-hole slots having the flanges 16 within the recesses 13 of the wedge shaped members 9 and by giving the heel calks one-half turn, the flattened faces will prevent the calk from accidentally moving Within the heel slots 11.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,

it will he noted that the heel calks are so applied to the shoe 1 that they may be readil removed Whenever desired and also when applied to the shoe will aid in holding the Wedge shaped members 9 from displacement Within the bifurcated ends or heel portions of the shoe. It will also be noted that the toe call: 6 may be readily removed when desired along with the heel callrs 12 providing a smooth shoe. moved from the shoe. the Wedge shaped members 9 are retained Within the bifurcated ends of the heel portions 3 by the pins 10 and the nails'which secure the shoe to the animals hoot. By placing the Wedge shaped members Within the heel and being con structed of rubber or other resilient materiai forms a cushioned heel to the shoe which Will aidin curing raw or infected feet of draft animals. 7

While K have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my imention v it will he understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may he made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
