Description

H. H. VAUGHAN.
PASSENGER CAR FRAME.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 10. 1913. RENEWED JUNE mums- 1,245,071.. Patented Oct. 30,1917.
UNKTED TATE PATENT @FFKCE.
HENRY H. VAUGHAN, 0F MONTREAL, QUEBEC, CANADA.
ressnlvenn-cnn FRAME.
Application filed. September 10, 1913, Serial No. 789,168.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY H. VAUGHAN, of the city of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada, a citizen of the United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Passenger-Car Frames; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates particularly to the features of passenger car bodies which contribute thereto self sustaining properties, and it has for its object to increase these properties and at the same time stiffen the roof, the improvement being obtained with out impairing the deck-sash openings.
To this end the invention may be said to consist of arched carlines of trefoil-arch form relatively braced by short purlins, and these carlines and purlins supporting the deck-sash frames between them; a further feature consisting of the particular construction of roof frame to include short purlins, the latter acting as individual sills for the deck-sashes for supporting the same in the external depressions of the trefoil.
For full comprehension, however, of my invention, reference must be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar reference characters indicate the same parts, and wherein;
Figure 1 is a diagrammatical transverse sectional view of a passenger car construct ed according to my invention, one half being illustrated with the wood work filled in, the other half showing the skeleton frame alone; and
Fig. 2 is a similar longitudinal view of the deck portion of the car.
As the invention relates solely to the deck carlines and purlin and side sill structure, the remainder of the car body will receive only incidental mention and is shown for the purpose, only, of illustrating the application of the difierent features of the invention.
My improved deck structure is clearly seen in Figs. 1 and 2; the carlines thereof Specification of Letters Patent.

consist of trefoiled arch construction, each comprising a pair of side arcs 6 Z) and a middle are 0 rolled, pressed or otherwise formed from a single commercial angle bar. These carlines are supported by the side plates 7.: and spaced in pairs, the pairs being in turn spaced the proper distance apart to accommodate deck-sashes d by a series of joined short purlins 6 each extending from the center of one deck-sash to the center of the next, and secured to the carlines by angle brackets f and supported by sub-carlines 9. The main and sub-carlines are fastened in place bearing upon the side plates 70 by bent ends it of the flanges of both forms of carlines, the upper ends of the subcarlines having their flanges bent and riveted as at z' to the purlins e. i
The crowns of the deck-sashes are braced from the ridge pole m by bars 8.
What I claim is as follows:
1. In a steel car monitor-roof, the combination with the sides of the car body, of carlines of trefoil arch form formed independently of said sides and having their lower ends supported thereon, a roof supported by said carlines and having decksash openings at the reentrant angles of the trefoil and conforming to the carlines in the cross-section of the car between said openings and arched longitudinally of the car over said openings, deck-sash frames supported in said openings, the longitudinal middle of the roof being supported at a height above the top of the deck-sash frames.
2. In a passenger car, the combination with spaced arched carlines, of purlins secured to the carlines each of such purlins extending from midway one of the spaces between the carlines to midway the adjoining space, and sub-carlines supporting and connecting the ends of one purlin with the ends of the adjoining purlins.
3. In a passenger car, the combination with a roof having deck-sash openings, of spaced carlines of trefoil arch form the roof conforming to the carlines between the decksash openings, purlins secured to the carlines each of such purlins extending from midway one of the spaces between the car- In testimony whereof I have signed my line to nndway the adJonnng space and m name to thls speolfieatlon 1n the n'esenoe of close proxlmlty to the lower slde edge of two Witnesses.
each adjacent deck-sash openings and sub- HENRY H. VAUGHAN. cmlines supporting and connecting the ends Witnesses:
of one purlin with the ends of the adjoining GORDON G. COOKIE,
purlins. WILLIAM J. C. HEWETSON.
