Be it known that I, KARL D. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, county of Calhoun, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of whichthe following is a specification This invention relates to improvements in pumps.
My improved pump is especially designed by me as an air pump, although certainfeatures are advantageous for embodiment in liquid pumps. 5
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide in a, pump an improved valve structure.
Second, to provide in a pump an improved valve structure which may be quickly taken apart for cleaning or repairs.
Third, to provide an improved pump in which the parts are simple and economical to produce and readily assembled.
Fourth, to provide a pump in which the cylinder ports, valve ports and seats and other portions of the valve structure require a minimum amount of machining and of such a construction that the required machining may be expeditiously performed.
Further objects, and objects relating to details and economies of construction and operation will, definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed outin. the claims.

In the drawingssimilar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates the pump cylinder and 2 the piston. The cylinder 1 has a face 3 at one side, preferably at the top, and preferably fiat, as shown, so that it may be easily machined. This flat face is adapted to receive the flat valve plate 4:, which is formed so that both its faces may be machined flat. The. cover plate 5 is mounted upon this valve plate, the inner face of the cover plate being machined fiat so'as'to fit and form a tightjoint' with'the outer face of the valve plate.
The valve and cover plates are secured in place by means of the stud bolts 6, which are secured in the cylinder, as indicated in Fig. V, and adapted to receive the winged nuts 7 which clamp the plates in place and Patented Get. 30, 1917.

The cylinder is provided with an inlet passage 8 having 7 an elongated delivery chamber 12 opening into the fiat face of the cylinder. The cylinder is also provided with a discharge, passage 9 having a portion 11 at. its inner end also opening in the flat face .of the cylinder. These inlet and discharge ports are located centrally and on opposite sides of the cylinder. The cylinder is provided with inlet ports 13 and 14: and outlet ports "15 and 16. These ports are arranged in opposed pairs atthe ends of the cylinder, theirrelation being best illustrated in Figs.
.1, Hand III. The valveplate 4 is provided with bores 17 and 18 which form continuations of the intake ports 13 and 14 respectively and registering with a bore l9 forming a .continuation'of the discharge port 8 lof'thel cylinder. The plate 4 is provided with groups of bores or ports 20 and 21 which open into the inlet chamber 12 (see Fig. Ill) and form part of the connection between that chamber and the inlet ports.
The groups of ports 20 and 21 are arranged in a circular order, as best shown in Fig. VII. The valve plate is provided with groups of ports 22 and 23 which form partof the connections for theoylinder discharge ports 15 and 16 and the discharge passage 9 see Fig. IT). The outer face or the valve plate constitutes valve seats for the annular disk valves, as hereafter described.
The cover plate 5 has a pair of rec'essdike valve chambers 26 and 27 formed in its inner face and embracing the cylinder inlet ports and also the inlet valve ports in the valve plate (see Fig. TIT).
Supporting guide studs 29 are disposed centrally or the groups 20 and 21 adapted to giiide the annular disk valves 30, 31, 3Q, 33. The valves 30 and 31 are the inlet valves and the valves and 33 are the discharge valves.
The cover plate' is provided with a recesslike valve chamber 528 for the discharge valves 32 and 33 disposed so as to embrace the parts 22 and 23 and also the discharge passage. The valve plate has recess like passages 2%- and connecting the cylinder discharge ports 15' and 16 with the outlet valve ports and 23, see Fig. H. The valves are held yieldingly upon their seats by the springs 3a seated in bores 35 formed in the innertace' of the cover plate.
With the parts thus formed and arranged they can be readily produced and machined, it being possible to form the greater portion of. the passages and ports by boring or drilling instead of coring, and all the ports are so formed that the parts can be readily machined and fitted together.
I have not illustrated the cylinder heads as they form no part of this invention or their arrangement and securing means as they will be readily understood by those skilled in the art. The operation of the device will also be readily understood. When the piston moves in the direction of the arrow in Fig. II the air enters the cylinder through the inlet valve 30 and is discharged through the valve When the piston moves in the opposite direction, as shown by the arrow in Fig. Ill, air enters the cylinder through the valve 31 and hence is dis charged into the valve 33. The springs tend to seat the valves and they are also held to their seat by pressure. I
I have illustrated and described my improvement in detail in the form in which I have embodied the same for the market. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe certain modifications and variations in structural details, which I contemplate, as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled, in the art to whichmy invention relates to enibodyor adapt my improvements as conditions inay require. I desire, however, to be understood as claiming my improvements specifically in the form illustrated as well as broadly within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. ln apump, the combination of a oylinder having a flat face at one side, and inlet and outlet ports opening in said face, said cylinder being also provided with inlet and oi' tlet passages o 'iening'in said tacaa valve plate having bores therethrough registering with said outlet passage and said inlet ports, and recesslike discharge passages in its inner face registering with said cylinder discharge ports and inlet and discharge valve ports disposed in circular groups and opening into said cylinder inlet passage and said discharge passages respectively the outer face of said plate constituting valve seats, annular disk valves arranged to seat on said valve plate to coactwithsaid ports, valve guiding studs mounted'on said plate centrally of said groups ofports, a cover plate having a recess-like discharge valve chamber in its inner face communicating with said outlet passage through said alv'e plate outlet passage bore and a pair of recess-like inlet valve chambers communicating with said cylinder inlet ports through said inlet passagebor'esthereot, and seating springs for said valves, said cover plate being provided with bore-like seats for said springs.
2. In a pump, the combination of acylinder ha ving' a fiat face at one side; and inlet and outlet ports opening said face, said cylinderbeing also provided with inlet and outlet passages opening in said face, a valve plate having bores therethrough registering with said outlet passage andsa-id inlet ports, and recess-like discharge passages in its inner face registering with'said cylinder discharge ports, and inlet and discharge valve ports opening into said cylinder inlet passage" and said discharge passages respec-' tively, the outer face of said plate constitut'ing valve seats, valves arranged to seat on said valve plate to coact with. said ports, a cover plate having a recess-like discharge valve chamber in its inner face communicating with said outlet passage through said valve plate outlet passage bore and a pair of recess-like inlet valve chambers communicating with said cylinder inlet ports through said inlet passage bores thereof.
3; In a pump, the combination of a cylinder having a valve plate face with cylinder inlet and outlet ports and cylinder inlet and outlet passages opening into said face, a valve plate having bores therethrough-registering with said outlet passages and said inlet ports disposed on said face and coacting therewith to provide discharge passages communicating with said cylinder discharge ports and inlet and discharge valve ports opening into said cylinder inlet and discharge passages respectively, the outer face of said valve plate constituting valve seats, valves arranged to inwardly seat on said valve plate to coact with said ports, and cover plate disposed on said valve plate and coacting therewith to provide a discharge valve chamber communicating with said outlet passage through said valve outlet passage bore and inlet valve chambers communicating with said cylinder inlet ports through said inlet passage bores thereof.
4. In a pump, the combination of a cylinder having cylinder inlet and discharge ports and inlet and discharge passages and a valve plate face into which said ports and passages open, a valve plate disposed on said face and having inlet and discharge valve ports and coacting with said valve plate face to provide communicating passages for said valve and cylinder ports between, a cover plate disposed upon and coacting with said valve plate to provide valve chambers connecting said discharge valve ports with said discharge passages and inlet valve chambers connecting said inlet valve ports with said cylinder inlet ports, disk valves arranged in said valve chambers to seat on said valve plate, and springs for seating said valves.
5. In a pump, the combination of a cylinder having cylinder inlet and discharge ports and inlet and discharge passages and a valve plate face into which said ports and passages open, a valve plate disposed on said face and having inlet and discharge valve ports and coacting with said valve plate face to provide communicating passages for said valve and cylinder ports between, a cover plate disposed upon and coacting with said valve plate to provide valve chambers connecting said discharge valve ports with said discharge passages and inlet valve chambers connecting said inlet valve ports with said cylinder inlet ports, and valves arranged in said valve chambers to seat on said valve plate.
