To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CARL R. Knox, a citizen of the United States ofAmerica, and resident of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to folding beds in general, but more particularly to beds of this kind which are combined with some other article of furniture, and especially those whichare combined with a table or desk or other similar piece of furniture.

Generally stated, the object of my invention is to provide a novel and efiicient folding bed of the foregoing general character.

A particular object is to provide animproved construction and arrangement whereby the bed frame, while in folded condition, is movable bodily in a horizontal plane, relative to the table, preliminary to the unfolding of the bed, and also after the bed is fully folded and ready to be inclosed within the table.

Another object is to provide a novel construction whereby the bed and table or other similar structure are separable and capable of use at one and the same time.

It is also an object to provide certain details and features of construction tending to increase the general efficiency and desirability of a table bed of this particular character.

To the foregoing and other useful ends, my invention consists in matters herein disclosed and claimed.

Figure 1, is a sectional View of a table, and also a side elevation of one end portion of the folding bed thereof, embodying the principles of my invention, and showing the said bed in folded condition and ready to be pushed into said table.

As thus illustrated, my invention comprises a table A, provided with a rectangular top at, end walls a and a side wall a which are all fixed in position at the top of the table. The four legs a are disposed at the corners of the table, in fixed relation thereto, and are of any suitable character. The table top is also provided with a swinging side wall a", hinged to the table top at its upper edge, whereby the box-like upper portion of the table can be opened at one side thereof. The end walls a are provided on the inner surfaces thereof, near their lower edges, with horizontal tracks a each track being provided with an incline a at the forward end thereof.

The folding bed 13 comprises four legs 6 which are rigidly connected together, and which are disposed at the inner sides of the table legs when the table and bed are brought together, as shown more clearly by Figs. 3 and 5 of the drawings. The bed frame is composed of three sections 72 b and b the firstand last being U-shaped in character, the middle section being composed of two parallel side bars, the entire bed frame being preferably made of angle iron. The sections 6 and b are connected together by short links 72 and the sections 6 and Z2 are connected together by similar links 6 whereby the said frame, with a suitable metallic fabric stretched thereon, together with the mattress O, are adapted to be folded or rolled up in the manner shown in Fig. 5. Section 5 is rigidly secured to the tops of the legs 6, and the folding legs 6 and .6 are pivoted respectively to the sections 5 and 5 in the manner shown in Fig. 2. In order that the said pivoted legs may automatically fold up, when the frame is folded or rolled up in the manner shown in Fig. 5, the upper ends of the legs 6 are connected by links 6 with the links 6 and the legs Z2 are similarly connected by links 6 with the links 6 these links 6 and Z2 being pivoted at opposite ends thereof.

lVhen the bed is folded or rolled up, it rests in compact form upon the tops of the legs 7), as shown in Fig. 1, and is then ready to be pushed inside of the table. it is obvious, therefore, with the foregoing construction and arrangement that the table and bed are completely separated, when the latter is unfolded, the two being capable of use independently of each other, and at one and the same time. The table, however, as explained, is constructed to support and practically conceal the bed, when the latter is not in use. 7

An important consideration of my invention is the manner in which both the table and bed are capable, with the construction as hown and described, of conforming to standard requirements in various ways. For example, the bed, when unfolded, is of the right height, that is to say, neither too low nor too high, which latter is often the case when an attempt is made to combine a folding bed with some other piece of furniture. Furthermore, and with the construction shown, the table may be of standard height, writing purposes, and the clearance below the table top, and below the bed, is of the character required for tables of this kind. In other words, the table and bed are combined without sacrificing any of the standard requirethe table being of such ments for either one,

Although the space or clearance below the bottom of the bed is sufficient to render the table suitable for use by the person seated in an ordinary chair, the construction is such that the top of the bed, when itis unfolded, is approximately of the standard height.

With the construction shown the end section 6 which may be called the inner end section of the bed-frame, is always right side-up, and when the frame is folded the other end-section b is rightside-up below the middle section, and the entire weightof the bed when thus folded is sustained by the fixed section 0 of the frame.

When the bed is in use, the head portion thereof may stand partially within the table, as each guide 0. a" terminates at the inner side of the front legs of the table, so that the legs Z) of the bed will rest on the floor before the bed frame is entirely withdrawn from the table. In this way, of course, it is not necessary to disturb the top of the table when the bed is withdrawn and unfolded, which is one advantage of this construction, but it will be understood that the bodily movem nt of the bed frame on a horizontal plane can be employed for any suitable or desired purpose, and in conjunction with a table having any suitable or desired construction. Each of the three sections of the bed frame is approximately one-third of the length of'the bed, and when the bed frame is folded within the table, the latter is then in condition for use in the ordinary manner, and, with the bed frame of the standard or ordinary length, the table will be of such width that it can be moved around and pushed through doorways of the ordinary or usual width. Obviously, the bed frame can be of any suitable or desired width, as the bed frame folds into three superimposed layers, so that the table as stated, may be of a width to pass through an ordinary doorway, and the table can, therefore, be of any suitable or desired length, and can be of such length that the bed will be of full width, like an ordinary full sized double bed, without departing from the ordinary dimensions or proportions usually required for tables. While one end of the bed is partially within the table, the front wall a of the table can be lowered to rest in an inclined position upon the end portion of the bed, and in this way the table wi l form t 1e head of the bed. As it is not necessary to have the tabletop a removable, it follows that the construction of the table can be rendered stifi and rigid by the permanent fastening of this tabletop in place, so that the two opposite ends of the table are rigidly and firmly connectedtogether and held against spreading apart.

though, when the bed is entirely from the table, so that the legs 0 rest upon the floor, there is then no weight imposed on the bed by the table, so that the structure of the latter is then under no strain. Obviously, therefore, the invention afiords a novel and practical method of combining a table with a folding bed frame of this kind, and is intended to solve some of the various problems involved in combining a table and bed into one unitary article of furniture, but the invention is not, of course, limited to the exact construction shown and described.

What I claim as my invention is 1- 1. A table bed comprising a table, and a folding bed remo ably supported by means within the upper portion of said table, adapted to be disconnected therefrom and unfolded for legs upon which the entire bed rests when fully folded and while being moved toward the table.

A table provided with a top, a folding bed below said top, adapted to be unfolded while said top remains in the horizontal plane thereof, provided with folding legs for supportingthe middle and one end of the bed, said folding bed also having four fixed legs upon which the other end of the bed is supported when in use and while being folded, and means above the fixed legs to sup port the bed in the table.

7. A table provided with a top, and a folding bed below said top, adapted to be unfolded while said top remains in the horizontal plane thereof, provided with folding legs for supporting the bed, the said top having four fixed legs, and said bed having four fixed legs, said table having means concealed in the upper portion thereof for raising the bed therein.

8. A table provided with a top, and a folding bed below said top, adapted to be unfolded while said top remains in the horizontal plane thereof, provided with folding legs for supporting the bed, end walls for the table, tracks on said end walls, means for engaging said tracks when the folded bed is moved into the table, and legs supported by said bed when said means engage said tracks.

9. The combination of a table and folding bed frame, the latter telescoping within the former, when the bed is folded, having means on the sides of the frame and the ends of the table to. lift the bed from the floor, and said table and bed being supported independently of each other when the folding bed is in use, permitting complete separation of the bed from the table by movement of the bed frame in the direction in which the same unfolds, and said bed frame when entirely folded being movable bodily into the table.

In combination, a body having a fixed top adapted for supporting loose articles thereon, and a folding bed frame inclosed in said body below said top and movable bodily into position forunfolding while said top remains in horizontal position, said movement of the frame while folded being in the same direction thereof in which the bed is thereafter unfolded, and said frame having laterally projecting means for engaging the upper portion of said body to support'the bed when the folded bed frame is-moved bodily in the opposite direction, said top being permanently fixed to said body, and said bed being movable bodily in folded condition a distance away from said body to permit independent use of said body and top at the same time.

12. In combination, a body having a top adapted for supporting loose articles thereon, and a folding bed in said body, movable into position for use while said top remains in horizontal position, said top being fixed to said body, and said bed being movable bodily in folded condition from below said top to permit unfolding thereof,'said bed including a frame composed of pivotally connected links and sections, said links providing space for the bedding between the sections when the frame is folded, and one end section being permanently right side up and having a sliding connection with said body.

13. In combination, a body, a folding bed frame in said body, movable relative thereto in folded condition, preliminary to being unfolded, adapted to be unfolded for use after said preliminary movement, and means to hold the bed frame against sidewise displacement during said movement, said frame including sections which are horizontal when inclosed in said body, and one of which sections is permanently right side up, said bed frame when entirely folded being mo able bodily into said body.

In combination, a body having ends, a folding bed in said body, movable relative thereto in folded condition between said ends, preliminary to being unfolded, adapted to be'unfolded for use after said preliminary movement, said bed including a frame composed of pivotally connected sections, the inner end section being permanently right side up and having a direct slidin connection with the ends of said body, ant legs supported bysaid inner end section when the bed is folded.

15. In combination, a body having a boxlike upper portion, a folding bed in said body, movable relative thereto without disturbing the folded condition thereof, preliminary to being unfolded, adapted to be unfolded for use after, said preliminary movement, said bed including a frame composed of pivotally connected links and secti ons, said links providing space for the bedding between the sections when the bed. is folded, and the upper portion of said. body having tracks to support the bed in said folded condition for said preliminary movement, and to receive the bed when entirely folded.

16. In combination, a body, a folding bed frame in said body, movable relative thereto in folded condition, preliminary to any un folding thereof, adapted to be unfolded for use after said preliminary movement, means at opposite sides of the bed to hold the frame against sidewise displacement during said preliminary movement, legs supported by said frame when the bed is folded, and folding legs to support the frame on the floor when the bed is unfolded, said preliminary movement being suliicient to carry the folded bed frame bodily and without any unfolding thereof into an exposed position at the front of said body.

In combination, a body, a folding bed frame in said body, movable relative thereto in folded condition, preliminary to any unfolding thereof, adapted to be unfolded for use after said preliminary movement, means at opposite sides of the bed to hold the frame against sidewise displacement during said preliminary movement, and folding legs to support the frame on the floor when the bed is unfolded, said preliminary movement being sufficient to carry the folded bed frame bodily and without any unfolding thereof into an exposed position at the front of said body, said frame having outer folding sec tions and an inner end section which slides horizontally into and out of said body while said top remains in horizontal position, said body having a table top, and said sliding end sections supporting the entire weight of the bed when said frame is folded and pushed into the body.

18. In combination, a body, a folding bed frame in said body, movable relative thereto in folded condition, preliminary to any unfolding thereof, adapted to be unfolded for use after said preliminary movement,means at opposite sides of the bed to hold the frame against sidewise displacement during said preliminary movement, legs supported by said frame when the bed is folded, and folding legs to support the frame on the floor when the bed is unfolded, said preliminary movement being sufficient to carry the fold ed bed frame bodily and without any unfolding thereof into an exposed position at the front of said body, said frame and body being separable and capable of use independently of each other. i

19. A folding bed comprising a furniture body having permanent ends and a fixed top, a three-section folding bed frame whereof the inner end-section thereof is always right side up and horizontal, having devices to connect the sections together, means on the ends of said body adjacent the frame to support the sides of said permanently right side up vinner end section for sliding movement into and out of said body, while the frame is entirely folded, means to support said inner end section stationary while the other sections are being folded thereon to bring the outer end section right side up below the middle section, folding legs to support the middle and outer end sections on the floor, the frame being practically entirely outside of said body when the bed unfolded, thereby permitting the use of said middle sect-ion as a seat for entering and leaving the bed, and means on said frame to support a mattress, said sections being each approximately one-third the length of the bed, the outer end section and the middle section being supported on tirely by and horizontally above the said sliding inner end section when the bed is entirely folded, and means for closing the front ofsaid bodyto conceal the folded. bed below said top..

20. A folding bed comprising a furniture body having permanent ends and a fixed top, a three-section folding bed frame whereof the inner end section thereof is always right side up and horizontal, hav ing devices to connect the sections together, means on the ends of said body adjacent the frame to support the sides of said permanently right side up inner end section for sliding movement into and out of said body, while the frame is entirely folded, means to support said inner end section stationary on the floor while the other sections are being folded thereon to bring the outer end section right side up below the middle section, folding legs to support the middle and outer end sections on the door, the frame being practically entirely outside of said body when the bed is unfolded, thereby permitting use of said middle section as a seat for entering and leaving the bed, and means on said frame to support a mattress, said sections being each approximately one-third the length of the bed, the outer end section being supported entirely by and horizontally above the said sliding inner end section when thevbed is entirely folded, and means for closing the front of said body toconceal the folded bed below said top, said devices including links which stand upright at front and rear of said body when the bed is folded.

21. A table-bed comprising a table-body having fixed end walls and a fixed rear side wall, a fixed top and a movable front side wall, a folding bed frame, means adjacent the sides of the bed to support the sides of one end section of said frame in sliding connection with upper portions of said body, thereby to permit movement of the folded frame bodily into and out of said body, which end section is horizontal when the bed is folded, said end walls extending approximately a third of the length of the bed, and legs for said frame, said body having four fixed legs, and said movable front side wall being mounted to close after the folded frame is moved bodily Within the table.

A folding bed comprising a body, a folding bed frame having means at opposite sides thereof to slide horizontally on said body, in the direction in which the bed unfolds, preliminary to any unfolding thereof, and which frame is foldable to bring the mattress and bedding entirely inside the rectangular bundle formed thereby, legs supported by said frame when the bed is folded, folding legs extending below the hori zontal plane of said means to support said frame, and a top adapted to conceal the bed within said body and form with the latter an ordinary table.

23. A folding bed comprising a body, a folding bed frame having means at opposite sides thereof to slide horizontally on said Gopies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the body, in the direction in which the bed unfolds, preliminary to any unfolding thereof, and which frame is foldable to bring the mattress and bedding entirely inside the rectangular bundle formed thereby, folding legs extending below the horizontal plane of said means to support said frame, and a top adapted to conceal the bed within said body and form with the latter an ordinary table, said body having guides, said frame having pivotally connected sections one of which slides on said guides, and the other sections of the frame being manually operable to fold and unfold the bed before and after the horizontal movement thereof.

24. A folding bed comprising a body, a folding bed frame having means at opposite sides thereof to slide horizontally on said body, in the direction in which the bed unfolds, preliminary to any unfolding thereof, and which frame is foldable to bring the mattress and bedding entirely inside the rectangular bundle formed thereby, legs supported by said frame when the bed is folded, folding legs extending below the horizontal plane of said means to support said frame, and a top adapted to conceal the bed within said body and form with the latter an ordinary table, said body having four fixed legs to support the folded bed within the table, fixed end and side Walls rigid with said table legs, and a movable front wall.
