SANITARY BAIL-RING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Got. 30, 1917.
Application filed March 6, 1917. Serial N 0. 152,914;
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE ALBERT HART- MAN, Sn, a citizen of the United States, re
siding at Homer in the county of Champaign and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Bail-Rings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to attachments de signed to be applied to receptacles and more especially to fruit jars and the like whereby the same may be readily converted into pails.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an improved attachment of this character which is designed to be applied to fruit jars of the Mason type in such a manner that the jar may be utilized as a milk pail, and which is so constructed that all parts thereof are readily assembled and detached from the jar when desired.
A supplemental object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this character which, owing to its simplicity will be sanitary and most eflicient and which will be cheap to manufacture and easily applied.
With these general objects in view and with other subordinate objects which will appear from the description, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be more fully herein described and claimed when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved bail ring;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a fruit Jill having my ring applied thereto.
In detail my improved device comprises a flat metal ring 1 preferably of aluminum or of any suitable material, having its inner diameter of substantially the external diameter of the mouth of a fruit jar 2 of the Mason type, so that it may be readily applied over the mouth of the jar and rest on the annular shoulder 3 which is usually provided on jars of this type.
Integrally formed at diametrically opposite points on the outer edge of the ring 1 is a pair of upstanding lugs or ears 4 inclined outwardly from the body of the jar and apertured near their upper ends to receive therethrough an ordinary bail or handle 5 which is preferably formed of a section of bent wire, but may be formed of any suitable material and type as desired. The handle 5 is designed to be detachably engaged with the ears i and forms no part of my present invention, the invention being restricted to the ring and the manner and method of applying the same to a jar as disclosed in the accompanying drawings.
In operation the ring 1 is applied over the open mouth of the jar 2 with the bottom fiat surface resting on the shoulder 3 and the usual packing washer 6 may then be applied to the upper face of the ring and the metal cap 7 screwed over the mouth of the jar whereby to clamp the packing washer 6 against the ring and force the same against the shoulder which will securely bind the ring on the mouth of the jar below the cap 7. When the handle 5 is engaged with the ears l the jar may be used as a pail for transporting the contents from place to place as desired. By inclining the ears 4 outwardly from the body of the jar a sulficient clearance is provided whereby the fingers of a person may be passed between the ears and the cap 7 when the same is being turned to unscrew it from the mouth of the jar and, owing to the flat surface of the ring as well as the dimensions of its inner diameter, there is provided an efficient bottom surface against which the packing washer 6 will be compressed to act as a more efiicient packing means than will the ordinary annular shoulder 8.
It is obvious that with slight alterations the device may be applied for a considerable number of uses and I desire to be understood that I do not intend to limit myself specifically to the details of construction and materials employed and described here in, but I intend that any changes may be made in these details and materials as may fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
An article of the class described comprising a flat ring of a size to be received over i pair of upstanding apertured earsvproject-V and adapted to seat upon the annular shoulprojection of said ears providing clearance der of a fruit ar having a reduced threaded for the fingers of a. person When screwing or 10 month portion and to be clamped thereon unscrewing the cap.
by the cover of the gar, sald ring, having 51 GEORGE ALBERTHARTMAN, SR
ing outwardly therefrom et dimnetrigolly Witnesses opposite: points, a bail handle pivotally CHABLE JD. Bret, mounted in said apertures and the outward CLARENCE E. KRUGH.
