pertains to .make and luse `,the same, referenceV being had to the accompanying drawings7 which illustrate the preferred form of the invention, though it is to be understood that tails of construction shown and described, as
` it is obvious that various modifications there.-
of within the scope of the claims will occur to .persons skilled in the art'. l
The object of the inventionis to produce` a railway. car underframe and superstructure in 'whichA is utilized railwayrails of theconventional type,- wherever such rails are adapted to be placed. y
`ifinothe'r object is to combine with such railway yrails a. bolsterA center `filler castingv comprising two parts. separable vertically and adapted to clamp between its parts the end portions ofthe webs of such rails, and also lto provide convenient means for attaching the inner ends vof draft sills, which" are preferably of Z-shapein, cross section.

A s will be noted in Figs. and 2, thedraftlv A inforce the draft andcenter sill connection, '5 a top cover plate 30is provided which eX- sills 13 are of Z-shape in Cross section. They extend beyond the end sills 14, which are preferably of built-up plate-girder forma.
proximately the same length, but the bottomV flange 16 is-cut away at 18 to facilitate the 'connection of the truss rods, hereinafter re- .ferred to, with the bolster center liller castlng.
This bolster center filler casting is of peculiarformation and comprises a lower mem-Y ber 20 and an upper member 21, between` which are clamped the end portions of the rails 1, which form the center sills ofthe car ,intermediate the bolsters.
To facilitate assembly, this bolster center filler casting is split horizontally, as shown in Fig. 3, and in its lower portion the usual king pin socket 12 is provided, in addition to which integral brackets 22 are cast upon said lower portion 20 and said brackets 22` serve as anchors for the yends of truss rods ets.
The upper member 21 of the bolster centen fillercasting extends rearwardly, as shown i in Figs. 1 and'3, and laps said rails 1 and,
as shown in said figures, vertical rivets eX- 'l' tend through the 'horizontal webs 25 Aand 26 of the bolster center filler casting parts to" connect,k the end portions of thek rails 1 thereto.
Likewise, the vertical webs 15v of the draft sills are secured by direct rivet connection with the flanges 4 of said sills, said rivets' being indicated at 29 in Fig. 1, and to retends atleast fromv theV end sill 14 through the bolster, and for some little distance therebeyond, toward the middle of the car,
as shown in plan view of Fig. 1. This top cover plate 30 is secured by direct rivet connection with the upper flanges 17 of the 1 Z-shaped draft sills. Coperating with the 4center sill construction, thus 'far described,
are the truss rods 23 which are anchored at their ends in the brackets 22 and supportstruts in turn bear against the lower faces of the center sill rolled sections 1.
The cross bearer, a plurality of which 'E may be employed when desirable, isformed of either pressed or cast diaphragms. 35
23 which arev held by bolts 24 in said brack,
end'portions of the crossv bearer are-filler castings 42, which underlie said side sills 41. The diaphragins 35, `as may be noted in Fig. 1a, are arranged in pairs on each side of the centerV sill rails 1, being` spaced and placed back to back. Each casting 42 has a portion or flange between the spaced webs of the diaphragms with which it yisl associated, which flange is riveted to and connects'both 'of said spaced diaphragm webs. Castings 42, one at each end of the cross bearer, also make connection between said cross bearer and the sidesills 41, side stakes in the form ofrailway rails-being attached in their lower portions to the normal bottom ianges of the rail side sills and to the ianges of the castings 42. Coperating struts 43 and truss rods 44 serve to sup-v sovk port the said sills 41 intermediate the` y bolsters, to which latter member the ends j of the truss rods 44 are connected by pins 45 which extend through eyes or openingsl inthe ends of said'truss rods and through"` i brackets 46 at the end portions ofsaid, bolsters, which are shown as being integral yphragrns 48y Vacross the bolster, and the middle portion of the bolster 'comprising the bolstelkcentel'f-iller-casting including the members 2O and 21, hereinafter referred to.
As before described, the bolster serves as an' anchor for the end portions ofthe truss rods 44.;r y n Y The webs of the railsr l are connected in` termediate the boltsers by the horizontal plate or baselike portions G1 of the struts 7, through which horizontal portions eXtend rivets VG2, which also pass through the hori- Zonta-l webs of said rails 1, thereby tying., these rails together and-intermediate these horizontal baselike portions 61 and the bolsters, the rails are also tied together by alsoserve as supports for supporting chocks h 65 which rest under the inclined floor GG'of intermediate their ends the struts 7, whichV parts of the bolster diaphragms 4S, but' f plates 64, which form loops for therails and a hopper car body. The loops or plates64 g A f portions of the center sills as shown to prowhich, with'ithe fillers 36 and 8 and top and said heads may be brought into Contact throughout their entire'length, thus bringy ing nearer together the inner hopper sheets 5 and increasing the capacity of thecar, in whichv event fillers would be required between'thevertical vwebs 15 of the'draft sills i and the 4bottom flanges 4V of said rails lto provide the 12g. inch spacing of Vdraft sills called for by lli/I. CQ B. requirements.
