Be it known that A I, CHARLES LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Trenton, county of Mercer, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rope- Thimbles, fully describedv and represented in the following specification and the accompanying `drawings,forming a part. of the Saule. ,fl l

This invention relates" to an improved thimble for use with wire ropes, the object being to provide astrong and simple thimble which is lreadily connected to or disconf nected from hook eyes orsiinilar closed'con- The thimble is intended espeeially for use in wire rope slings, where it enables a drop forged hook to be used with integral closed eye, thus avoiding the necessity' for a separate ring toconnect the thimble to thehook eye, but the invention is of general application with rope'thimbles.

. In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, there isshown a rope thimble embodying all the features of the invention in their preferred formas l applied to wire rope slings and the` like, and

this construction will now be described in detail, and the features forming the invention then--speoiically pointed out in the, claims.

Referring to the drawings, the thimble or ey' piece is formed of two section-s A, A divi ed longitudinally of the thimble and secured together by rivets, bolts or like securi of section A', and the tongue 5 of section A ing means 10 through the bodies of the two sections, so as toform the usual groove for receiving the rope X. The section A is open at its outer end as at 2, and section A is open at the inner end as at 3. These openings are filled by tongues formed integrally with the sections, the tongues being' of such size as -to lit snugly within the vopenings and completely lill the same, vthe tongue 4 .of section A entering and closing the open end 3 entering and closing the open end Q of seotien- A. The two parts of the thnnble are C; Sunbascured by rivets 1 to hold the posite ends.

The hook eye or other similar member is readily applied to the thimble by passing the eye through the open end of one of the thimble sections, then through the open .end

ofthe .other thimble section, and then' securing the sections together. The provision of the tongues entering and closing the open ends has greatly strengthened the thimble and provided for Astrengthening of those parts most liable to wear and breakage.
