Fig. 12 is a detail section taken on line ie-ie of Fig. e.
As shown in the drawings:
.The frame of the wrapping machine is Vdenoted :is a ivhole by the reference numeral 1, and suitably'mounted therein to receive a ivrapper applied thereon is an` annular object 2, supported upon means which serve to revolve the object. Revolubly mounted .in the wrapping machine and forming a part thereof, is a circular open ap rev oluble shuttle 3, driven by suitab e nieans to revolve through the eye' of the annular object 2. Mounted perpendicularly upon the front surface of the shuttle 8, is a paper reel 4, from which the strip of paper is led through a tension device consisting of a plate 5, having a plurality of upright pins 6, thereon, around which the paper strip is -led and from the tension device to and through the folder device from which it is drawn with its margins folded for application around the article being wrapped. Said folder device consists of a flat late 7,
Y one end ofwhich is of reduced ivic th dile to the provision of notches S, thereinand with the other end of said plate curved and bent around to afford a cy indrical portion 9. Another plate 10, is attached to and spaced from said plate 7, with the margins 11, of said plate 10, bent inwardly in a conical manner, so that the same convergetoward the reduced end of the plate 7, and with'a portion 12, of said margins flattened and riveted fiat against the surface of the late 7, by rivets 13. As clearlyr s hoivn in ig. 7, seid plate 10,. is provided with small slots 14,' therein, through which access is had for riveting the tivo plates together and a large slot 15, is provided centra ly of said plate 10,`through which access may be had to the wrapping strip passing` therebeneath as, lfor instance, in initially threading the end of the ivra) ing strip through the folder device. l`lie c lindrical portion 9, of the folder device a ords a means of'atvtachment thereof upon the shuttle 3, and
`tained thereon. As clearly shown in ."ig. 2,
a sto in20 is provided on said plate 5 to liiiiit? theV utward swing Vof the falde.z device.
A flat As clearly shown in Figs. 2, 3, and l, another reel of wrapping material 21, is provided upon tha shuttle Il, which may be of the saine or dil'i'crcnt material from the rcel fl, described, and the strip of material drawn therefrom is led through a tension device 2Q, and thence around a frnstro-conical roll 2f: to the article being wrap led.
The operation is as follows:
The sti-ii of wrapping material 4, after being led roin the reel through the tension device 5 6, is led around the rounded cylindrical extension 9, of the folder device and then threaded therethrough between the plates 'i' and 10` The flaring portions 11, of the plate 10, which extend over the edges of the plate 7, serve to turn the margins of the strip of material 4, inwardly.' so that the saine are folded beneath the strip as the saine is applied upon thel article. The construction of the folder device and the inaniier in which it is mounted, permits the sinne to readily adapt itself to .practically :in v conditions of wrapping, that is, for articles of dill'erent size and as ivell takes care of tli'e effects of high speeds of operation of the machine. The pivotal mounting of the folder device upon the inclined bolt 18, permits a certain movement of the folder device and the tilt to the device, due to the angled position of the bolt, insures a proper feeding direction of the strip drawn through the device to the article. Furthermore, the curved portion of the plate 7, leading to the cylindrical portion 9, )rovides a somewhat resilient structure, so that a slight'. warping movement of the entire folder device may take place during a wrapping operation, so that the folder device readily accommodates itself to all conditions of wrapping, obviating any possibility if tearing the strip passing tlieicz'imigli.
I ani avvera i; if iarious details of construction mij: be varied through a Wide range without departing from thc principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention:
1. A folding device comprising a plate having one end formed into a cylindrical. portion andthe opposite end having o positely disposed notches, a tapered plate iaviiig both edges flared to provide tapered conical members and iatteiied portions and means attaching the flattened portions to .ie first named plate.
2. A folder comprising a fiat guide plate,
a retaining late having its edges flared to fold both sic es of a. strip of paper and then flattened to encrage against and space the plates apart and means for ri idly attaching the fiat-tened parts to the gui e plate.
. 3. A folder comprising a guide plate formed to provide a cylindrical portion at one end and notched at its opposite end, a i In testimony whereof I heve hereunto sub'L retaining plate spaced therefrom, tapered scribed my name in the presence' of two sub conical folders at opposite edges of the soribing `Witnesses.'
plates having the outer ends vflattened into FRANK M. PIERCE. smid notches in the guide plate to provide a Witnesses: space equal to the space `between said plates. 4EARL M. HARDINE,
