Specification of Letters Patent. l Patented 0G15.
To @ZZ/whom t may concern:
Be it known that, I, 'JACOB B'Laszozrn, a subject of the Emperor of Russia, residing at Chippewa Falls, in they county of Chippewa and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful improvements. in Sled-Brakes, of rwhich the following is a specication.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements insled brakes.
lThe primary object ofthe invention is the provision of anattachment for yhand sleds whereby the occupant thereof may readily retard the ,onward movement of the sled'without interfering withthe steering of the same, the structure being easy and inexpensive to manufacture.y
, A furtherfobject'of the `device is to: provide a brake member adapted for engaging the road-bed at a point'beneath a sled and operable froma point above the forward portion thereof, y'the same being' readily actuated by the occiuiantofV the sled and thereafter automatically, returned to its normal inoperative position.' i
1n the drawing forming a part of this application and in `which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a central verticaly longitudinal sectionalV view of a sled provided with the present device, the same being illustrated by dotted lines in its operative position.l
Fig. 2 is a top` plan view thereof with the top board broken away. y
Fig. 3f is an enlarged sectional view of the foot actuating means ofv the device; f Y.
-Fig. iis a longitudinal sectional view of a modified Lformi of foot-actuating member',
and, A
Figi) is a vertical sectional view taken upon line V-V of Fig. 4f. 'Y
The present arrangement is adaptable for dierent forms of sleds, the same being herein illustrated in connection with a hand sled having opposite runners 11 and a deck or top `board 12 of substantially the usual construction. 11T-shaped brace iron 13 is arranged forwardly of the sled consisting of a cross bar 14 connecting together the upper ends of the runners 11 and secured thereto by screws 12, to which bar al drawing rope (not shown) is adapted to be secured while the feet or hands of the occu pant who is seated upon the sled top 12 may readily engage the bar 14 as the same isA spaced .considerably forwardly of the front edge y15 ofthe top board 12.
They said braceiron hasY a rearwardly .pro jecting member arranged perpendicular to the bar 'la consisting of parallel stripsl having their rear ends attached by bolts .17 tothe board 12 while guides 1S are arranged beneath the strips .l'in parallelism therewith, with their forward ends secured be., neathV the'fbiar 14; and with their rear ends connected to the lower ends ofthe 4aforef mentioned bolts 17 upon the under face o theboard 12. Y y 1,. The brake proper .consists of a substantiallyrectangular frame19 hinged to a plate 20'secured substantially Ycentrally. beneath the top board 12 of the sled and between the runners 11"tl1ereof,a toothed plate 21 being carried by the free end of the frame 19 adapted for engagement with the road-bed such asV 22, when the said yframe is swung downwardly.
.A post 23 is arranged substantially upright between'the strips 16 having a cross handle 24 at its upper end while the lower endof the post is pivotally` connected by means of a rod 25 with a central crank` portion 26 of the frame 19. A. hub 27 is centrally provided upon the post23 having oppositely projecting spindles 28 upon which anti-friction sleeves or rollers 29..'are journaled adaptedV to travel upon'the guides 1S beneath andin contact with the stripA 1,.retaining washers 30 being arranged upon said spindles for the said rollers. z
.A helical spring 31 cncircles the rod' 25 having its rear Vend anchored' as at 32 to the .plate 2O while' the.v forward endv of said spring is looped around the post 23.
- With an occupant seated' upon `the top 12 ofthe sled 10 and its feet positioned adjacentfthe ybar -lel with `the brake mechanism *Jlreld' yin its normal elevated inoperative position by the spring 31, the feet of the 0perator may be readily positioned upon the handle 24 and said handle forced forwardly carrying the postV 23 and the rod 29 in a corresponding direction, thereby lowering the frame 19 with the plate 21 in engagement with the road-bed 22, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawing. Upon releasing the handle 2st, the spring 31 automatically returns the said post and handle as well as the rods 25 rearwardly and the frame 19 upwardly. It will be understoodl that the post 23 may become slightly tilted
