lVith the above recited objects ini view, and others which wilLappear as the nature of the invention is more fully understood, the improvement consists-inthe construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forthimthe followingspecification and falling within the scope of the appended claim. i

The rails RR have their body portions constructed in the usual manner. The ends of the rails are, however, enlarged or thickened so that the webs upon one of the sides of each of therails is disposed flush with the head of the said rail; Each of the enlarged ends is out vertically and longitudinally to provide faces or walls which are flush with one of the faces of each of the webs of the rails. The straight vertical face of the enlargement of the rail R, indicated by the numeral 1, provides the head of said rail with an angular shoulder 7, the juncture of said shoulder with the said face 1 being rounded, as indicated by the numeral 8. The inner straight wall or face of the enlargement of the rail end R has its head terminating in a shoulder 10, the said shoulder being disposed a suitable distance at the rear of the terminal of the base flange 11, and the end of the rail is extended a suitable distance beyond the terminal of the base flange, the distance between the end 11 of the base flange and the end of the extension equalingthe distance between the end of the base flange of the rail R and the shoulder 7 provided by the head of the said rail R. The inner face of the rail from its shoulder 10 is beveled or inclined outwardly, as indicated by the numeral 13, and is from thence continued longitudinally in a vertically straight plane, as indicated by the numeral 14:. The inclined and longitudinally extending portions 13 and 14: have centrally and integrally formed thereon a longitudinally extending rib 15, the rib being shaped to be snugly received within the channel 4 of the rail R, and so the said rib, while presenting an outer longitudinally. eXtend ing vertically straight face for a certain distance from the end of the rail extension has its inner portion inclined, as at 16, toward the web and the shoulder 10 of the rail R, this portion corresponding to the inclined portion 5 of the channel The outer endof the'rib15 is beveled, as at 17, in an opposite direction to the inclined or beveled terminal of the channel 4: of the rail R, and the inner face of the wall 14 has its eX- tremity beveled or rounded, as at 18, to correspond with the beveled or rounded corner,
8 provided at the juncture of the shoulder 7 and the inner face of the rail end B. The rib 15 is provided with a plurality of elongated slots 19 corresponding in number with the bolt openings 9 of the rail R, and adapted to register with the said openings. \Vhen the rails are assembled, suitable securingbolts 20 are passed through the registering openings and the said bolts are provided with retaining nuts 21.
From theabove description, taken in connection with the drawings, it will be noted that I have provided a simple, strong and efficient joint for the meeting ends of railway rails, one wherein the tongue or rib not only engages within the channel of the coacting rail, but in which the peculiar formation of the co-acting faces of the rail ends provide an effective lock between the said rail ends. It will be noted that when assembled, the portion ofthe rail ends projecting beyond the terminals of the base flanges rest upon the upper faces of the base fiangesof the opposite rails; and that the joint efiec tively provides for the expansion and contraction of the rails, without subjecting the Copies of this patent may be obtained for web, said thickened portions being arranged in overlapping relation and having opposing faces extending from the base to the upper surface of thehead, and respectively provided with a longitudinal groove and a tongue to fit in said groove, theopposing ends of said tongue and groove being beveled, the projection of the first-named rail end being beveled at its outer end and the inner end of the doubly thickened portion of the other rail end being correspondingly beveled, and boltsextending through the over-lapping portions of the rail ends and securing them together.
