My invention relates to printing devices for reproducing a multiplicity of prints arranged in symmetrical relation from a single negative.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device by means of which a sensitized plate may be moved with respect to the negative which is held in fixed position so that the design on the negative may be transferred to the plate a number of difierent times; means being provided whereby the plate may be moved slightly from the negative in order to permit its movement rela tively thereto into another position.

In carryin out my invention, I provide a base or tabfiz 1 having suitable supports 2. This table is provided with a central circular-opening 3. As will be seen from Fig. 1, the table has extensions 1* and 2 on opposite sides thereof. Run ways 4 which form a track are provided, this track extending over the table, and the extension as clearly shown-in Fig. i.
Referring now more particularly to Figs.
3 and 4; of the drawings, it will be observed that l have provided a pair of negative holders. These negative holders which consist of rectangular plates as shown n Fig. 1,

Theframe 13 isprovided with pinions 13 at the end of av common shaft 13' (see Fig. 9), these pinions being arranged to engage racks 15 at the o posite edges of the table 1. The shaft 13' bearingthe pinions 13 is rovided at its end with a worm ear 16 which is driven by a worm 17, (see ig. 2). This worm 17, it will be observed is feathered to a shaft 18, so as to slide longitudinally with res ct to the shaft 18, but to turn with it. 17", which extends downwardly from the frame 13. The handle 19 is secured to the end of the shaft 18 and is arranged to play over a dial 20 which is perforated so as to permit a ortion of a sprin I in 19 carried by the iiandle, to enter. Referring now to Fig. 10, it will be seen that the frame 14 is provided with a shaft 14', having at its ends inions 14, which engage racks 21, carried y the movable frame 13. The shaft 14' bears a worm wheel 22, whichis feathered to it, in a similar manner as the worm wheel 17 and which is carried between the brackets 22 rejecting from the frame 14. These shafts are rotatable and are provided with cam portions 28 (see Fig. 6) disposed in boxes 29', carried by the frame 29, which as will be observed from Fig. 6, is U-shaped so as to let it extend downwardly through the frames 13 and 14. From .Fig. 6, it will be observed that the boxes 29* on one side of the frame 29 are U-shaped so asto rest on the cams 28. The

The'opposite edge of the sensitized plate 36 is held by the clamping device, which consists of an upper portion 38 and a lower portion 39, the upper portion being provided with brackets 40, holding screws 41, which extend through lugs 42 on the frame 29, Winged nuts 43 being provided for moving the clamping device so as to tighten or stretch the sensitized plate and cross head 45 has a hinged connection 46 to one of-the uprights, and has a removable pin 47 which extends through the other upright for holding the cross head in position. The cross head bears a rock shaft 48 having arms 49, which are connected by links 50 to rock arms 51 on the shaft 52 bearing the cam 53. (See Fig. 4). The cam 53 is disposed in a recessed opening 54 of the frame 55 at the upper end ofthe plunger 56 so that when the rock arm 49 is moved by the handle 57 the cam 53 will be turned so as to raise or lower the plunger 56. The latter has an adjustable stem 58 which is secured to a pressure head ,59, guides 60 being provided for this head, as'shown in Fig. '4. The lower portion of the head is provided with a resilient covering 61.

When the hand wheel is turned,
the frame may therefore be raised on its hinges. (See Fig. 6). It will be observed that the bracket 67 is inclined so as to permit the swinging of the frame 29 on its hinges.
Disposed below the table 1 is ailamp 68 which is carried by a post 69 preferably secured to the table by posts 70. In Fig. 1, it will be seen that I have provided a screw 71 at the side of the table 1. This screw is used in connection with the pointer 72 carried by the frame 13, this pointer being capable of being moved relatively to the frame to any desired position by a rotatable adjusting member 73. The frame 13 in turn carries a screw 74 which is used in connection with the pointer 75 of the frame'14. (See Fig. 12).
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation of the apparatus will be readily understood. The sensitized plate may be clamped between the clamping members 34 and 38, see Figs/o and 8,prior to its positioning in the device. The cross head 45 may be raised by withdrawing the pin 47 and lifted outwardly on the handle 76 in any suitable manner thereby lifting the pressure head out of the Way. The sensitized plate may now be placed in position by slipping the member 34 over the pins 33, see Fig. 5, and tightening up on the nuts 43 so as to stretch the plate and draw it into perfectly flat condition. The negative is placed in the circular portion 6 of the holder and is secured with registering indicating markers on the negative, and on the top of the body portion of the holder, the circular portion of the holder and the recessed portion may then be brought into proper position by 7 cross head may be adjusted by turning the threaded stem 58. The process is generally begun by making a print in one corner of the plate and when the negative is in proper position, the handle 57 is then thrown down- Wardly thereby forcing the pressure head down upon the sensitized plate and bringing the latter into close contact with the negative. The electric light may be thrown on, and the exposure made after which the light is turned out.
The handle 57 is now raised, thus relieving the pressure from the sensitized plate. The handle 30 is turned in he direction shown by the arrow in Fig. 2 and thus lifts the frame 29 bearing the sensitized plate so thatthe latter is free from the negative.
The handle 19 may now be used to move the frame 13 and also with it the frames 14 and 29 so as to bring the sensitized plate to another position with respect to the negative.
The greatest accuracy can be secured by the use of the screws and the micrometer disks so that the accurate spacing of the dc signs which are to be duplicated on sensitized plates is assured.
Instead of printing on the sensitized metal plate, I may, if I desire, print on to another negative, and to this end, I provide a negative holder 80. 'This is used in connection with the pins 33 carried by the frame 29. To this end, the holder has a flange 80 provided with holes 80* arranged to slip over the pins. The holder is provided with an opening which is covered by the negative 81. At 82 are recesses in the holder, in which are disposed wedges 83, the wedges having resilient material disposed next to the negative. By manipulating these wedges. the negative may be firmly clamped in position. Theoperation of the printing is similar to that already described in connection with the metal plate.
In Figs. 18 and 19 I have shown modified forms with means for holding the sensitized plate in position on the frame 29. (See Fig. 18). The hand clamp 85 is held by means of a screw 86 against the sensitized plate 36. In Fig. 19, the frame 29 has a Z shaped member 29 between which and the support 87, the plate 36 is clamped, the set screw 88 holding the two clamping members firmly together. a
In printing on the negative, it is advisable to use a cloth, such as that shown at 90 in Fig. 4 to prevent light getting to the parts of the plate not intended to be exposed.
The apparatus described provides means for quickly and economically printing large number of similar designs in a very short space of time, and absolutely spacing the designs symmetrically.

a negative carried by the base in registration with said opening, a frame movable in one direction with respect to said base, a second frame carried by said first named frame and movable thereon in a direction at right angles to the movement of the first named frame, a frame hinged to said second named movable frame and adapted to carry a Y, sensitized plate, means for stretching said sensitized plate, and means for exerting pressure on the plate to bring the latter into engagement with the negative.
3.
