Application filed July 6, 1916. Serial No. 107,838.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN THOS. GosLINn, a citizen of the'United States, residing at Vancouver, in the Province of British Columbia and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Side-Dressing Attachments for Saw-Filing Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an attachment for circle saw filing machines,;and the primary object of the invention is to provide an attachment, which is applicable for detach able mounting upon the slide of a saw filing machine, which is commerciallyknownas the Coval No. 55, or which may be attached to any similarsaw filing machine. An object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature, which will dress: or
filethe sides of the teeth of thesaw, making all of the teeth of uniform width. t v
. A further object of this invention is to rovide a side dressing attachment as specied which includes a, pair of pivotally mounted brace controlled jaws, and-means foradjusting the position of the outer active or operative ends of the jaws, for regulating their engagement with the sides of the teeth of a circle saw and to mount files in the outer inner faces of said jaws for dressing the sides of a circle saws teeth.
With the foregoingand other objects in View this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
I In describing the invention in. detail reference will be had'to the accompanying drawings wherein: like characters, designate like and corresponding parts throughout the several views, and inwhich Figure 1 .is a side elevation of the improvedv side dressing attachment showing the same applied.
Fig. 2 is a top planviewiof the attachment. 7
I Fig. 3 is a horizontal section having the top .or cover plate removed,
ings, 1 designates a slide which is an exten-.
sion on the originalslides of a saw filing machlne, and 2 designates the side dressing attachment as an entirety. The side dressing attachment includes a cross head structure 8. The cross head structure 3 is composed of side plates at and abottom plate 5. One of the side plates 4 is provided with a hand screw 6, which. is provided for clamp; ingengagement with the slide lfor holding the cross head at adjusted positions upon the slide. p
A plate 7 ismounted upon top of the cross head structure 2 and it is provided with upstanding sides 8 which are cut away as shown at 9. A pair of jaws 10 and 11 are pivotally connected as shown at 12 to the upper surface of the plate 7, and they extend the length of thefplate and project a short distancebeyondthe outer end of the same. The jaws 10 and 11 are provided with cut out portionsl3 formed in their inner facing surfaces, in which are placed files 14E. Clamping plates 15 are attached to the outer end of the jaws 10 and 11 by. suitable set screws 16 and theyare provided with recesses 17 whiohrecei vc the forward inner corners of the files for clamping the files securely in the recesses 13 and holding them connected to the jaws 10 and 11. Thejaws 10 and 11 have their inner edges cut away, adjacent their rear pivoted ends as shown at 19. A fiat spring 20 is positioned between the facing edges of the jaws 10 and 11 and its forward. end engages the shoulders 21' numeral 26 in Fig. 1 of the drawings will be properly engaged by the files 14. An upstanding boss 27 is formed upon the plate 7 and is provided with. a screw threaded bore 28 into which the lower end of a hand screw 29 is threaded, The hand screw 29 extends through a cover plate 30, which cover plate has its forward edges connected to the upstanding sides 8 of the plate 7 by set screws v asshown at 3L Thehand screw 29 1s propose, 7
Fingers 33 andifi are connected to the outer edges of the forward ends of the jaws 10 and 11 and extend outwardlytherefrom. The fingers 33 and 34 are preferably constructed of resilient metal and have their outer ends curved as shown at 35, to provide a rounded surface for ongaging the sides of a circle saw blade, as clearly shown in Fig. l of the-drawings. The fingers exert a tension on'the saw blade andtend to hold the edge of the same firmly as it passes through the files l iandyin alinement with-the files.
A second cover plate a0-is mounted over therear pivoted end of the jaws 10 and 11 and is attached to the rear portions of the upstanding sides 8 byset screws 41. Y
The jaws 10 and 11 are provided with cut out portions 36, which are adapted for receiving'the lug or boss 27 when the saws are in a closed position.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of construction and of the method of operationof the improved slide dressing attachment for saw filing machines will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, and while in the foregoing-description, the principle of the operation of this invention has been described together with various features of construction, itis to be understood vthat certain minor features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be altered to suit practical conditions provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of whatris claimed,
