.Be it known that I, HOWARD M. BARBER, a citizen of the United States, andresident of Stonington, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Greasing Mechanism for Sheet Collecting and Folding Machines, of which the following'is ,a specification. l The object of my invention is to provide means for creasing partially folded signatures so that when the signatures are finally folded, cut, gathered and secured together, the product thus formed will r eadily'lie open at any particular'page. i
A further object is to provide means for creasing a transversely folded i signature longitudinally of its-travel upon-one or both sides of its longitudinal fold line before its longitudinal fold is made.
A still further object is to provide means for reversely creasing the partially folded signature upon one or both sides .of the longitudinal fold line so that the leaves will readily fold back either way along the A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which, v f Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of so much of a sheet collecting and folding machine as includes my invention.

The two side frames of the machine are denoted by 1 and 2. The web feed mechanism is denoted by 3. The pair of rotary cutters 4, 5 have shafts 6, '7, which cutters are, in the present instance, shown as provided with one set of 'coactingblades 8*," 9, arranged to cut the web transversely into one sheet forea'ch revolution-of the cutters.

This cylinder 24: is arranged todeliver-thefsheet on to the folding table 26 by any suitable means, such as the two sets of endless tape carriers 27, 28, Onthis table 26, the transversely folded signature is folded longitudinallyof its travel by the usual folding blade 29-and coacting jaws30.
The cam mechanisms for insuring the proper opening and closing ofthegrippers on the cylinders 10, 15,'1,7,and 24; the cam mechanism for insuringthe folding oflof Y the collected sheetsfromthe cylinder 10 to the cylinder 15, and for controlling the floatingof the tucking blade and folding jaws, and the mechanism, (not shown, for controlling the operation of'the foldingmechanism for impartingthewlongitudinal-fold to the transversely nfolded signature, will not be specifically described herein as they maybe of anywell known orpapproved form and are not a part of the' present invention, which invention is directed to the creasing of the partially ;f,olded signatures, the mechanism fonwhich will now be described.

First creasing disks 31, 32, 33. are'shown as coacting wit-h the cylinder 17, the disk 31 being arranged to crease the transversely folded signature longitudinally of its travel along its longitudinal fold line so as to facilitate the folding of the said signature longitudinally of its travel on the-table 26. The creasing disks 32,33, are arranged to coact with the cylinder 17 to produce the first creases longitudinally of the travel of the transversely folded signature upon the sides of and parallel withthe longitudinal fold line and at predetermined distances therefrom. Second creasing disks 34, 35 are arranged to coact with the cylinder 21 to reversely crease the transversely folded signature longitudinally of its travel along the first creases formed by the creasing disks 32, 33. In the present instance, I have shown one of these slitting disks 39'mounted on a cross shaft 40, and I have shown twosets of creasing disks, the disk 3l being mounted on a cross shaft 41, and the disks 32, 33, 34, 35, being mounted on cross shafts 42,43, 44, 45 respectively. 7 r
The several rotary parts are interconnected to move at the desired relative speeds through a'train of gearing 47,48, 49, 50, 51, 5e, 53, 5c. 1 I I wish it understoodthat 'by'the term cylinder I contemplate anysuitable means for carrying the sheets-through'the prescribed paths, and by the-term grippers I contemplate any suitable means for engaging said sheets. 7 In theembodiment of the-invention shown and described-herein, the operation of the machine is-as follows: The 4 Web as it comes upon opposite sides thereof. This reverse creasing of the signature adjacentto its longitudinally foldededge and parallel therewith, will permit each of the leaves to be readily turned back and forth on the said reverse crease asa hinge, permitting the product formedfromh'ansignatureroricollected group. of signatures to be readily openedand when, ope tolie flat t any particular portion thereof. 7
It is evident-that various changes may be resorted to in. the construction, form and arrangement of the various-parts Without departing from the spirit. and scope of my invention and hence I do not Wish to limit myself strictly to the construction herein set forth, but r What I claimis: I

7. In a machine of the character described, means for imparting a plurality of folds to a signature, carriers for the folded signatures and means coacting with the carriers for reversely creasing the signature.
8. In a machine of the character described, means for folding a signature trans+ versely of its travel, carriers for the trans versely folded signature and means coacting With the carriers for reversely creasing the signature longitudinally of its travel.
9. Ina machine of the character described, means for folding a signature transversely of its travel, carriers for the transversely folded signature, means coacting With the carriers for reversely creasing the signature longitudinally of its travel and means for folding the signature longitudinally of its travel.
