Description

J. PEARSON SLIDING DOOR LOCK. APPLICATION HLED JULY 29, 19I6.
Patented Oct. 16, 1917,
M m 7 d 1 d 9 A m [6 j Z 6 U W JACOB PEARSON, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
SLIDING-DOOR LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Get. 16, 1917.
Application filed July 29, 1916. Serial No. 112,141.
T all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Jason Pearson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of lvlinnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sliding- Door Locks; and I do hereby declare thefoh lowin to be a full clear and exact descri 2- tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a sliding door lock and one of its objectsis the provision of a device of this character, which shall be simple, durable and eiiicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
Another object of this invention is to provide a casing for receiving abolt and haviug means therein for an engagement with the bolt to lock it against withdrawal-therefrom.
A further object of this invention is to provide a catch pivoted in said casing and having means secured tneretofor normally holding the free end thereof into an engagement with the bottom of the casing, whereby upon insertion of the bolt in the casing, the catch will engage the bolt and lock same against withdrawal.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a plate for pivotally supporting the bolt and having means thereon for supporting the bolt in a substantially horizontal plane and which is capable of allowing the bolt to be swung upon its pivot to depend downwardly therefrom.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a sliding door lock, constructed in accordance with my invention, illustrating it applied to a pair of sliding doors,
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 is transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 1 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4' l of Fig.2, illustrating means for supporting the bolt in a horizontal plane,
Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the device, illustrating the free end of the catch, and
Fig. 6 is a plan view of a handle for operating the catch from the opposite side of the doors from which the device is mounted.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a door frame having slidably mounted thereon in any suitable manner doors 2 and 3, to which my invention is applied. A casing 1 consisting of a bottom wall 5 having secured to eachedge thereof side walls 6 which are cut away as illustrated at 7 to dispose the free end of a catch 8 that is pivoted to the side walls 6 as.
illustrated at 9., The pivoted end of the catch 8 is spaced from the bot-tomb for the reception of a locking bolt 10, which will be hereinafter more fully described. The, base 5 has bolts 11 extending therethrough and which extend through the door 2 to receive nuts 12 for securing the casing 4t to the door.
A plate 13 is secured to the door 3 adjacent the casing i by a bolt 14: which projects beyond the plate 13 and has pivoted thereto the locking bolt which is provided at its free end with a projection 15 to engage the free end of the catch 8. A lug 16 is formed on the plate 13 and extends forwardly therefrom for supporting the locking bolt 10 in a substantially horizontal plane and which will allow the locking bolt to be swung about its pivot to depend downwardly from the plate when desired to prevent the bolt from projecting beyond the door when the door is in an opened position.
hen desiring to lock the doors 2 and 3 together, the locking bolt 10 is swung to a substantially horizontal position and by moving the doors 2 and 3 in the direction of each other, the locking bolt 10 will onter the casing l between the base 5 and the catch 8 and the catch 8 will engage the notch 15 upon the locking bolt and lock same against withdrawal from the casing, thus preventing the doors from being moved apart or into an open position. A plate 17 is secured to the catch 8 upon its pivot end and has secured thereto a coil spring 18 which in turn is secured to a transversely eX- tending strip 19 secured to the upper edges of the ,side Walls'G, providing aconstruction which Will force the free end of the catch 8 into, an engagement With thenotch vl5 upon the locking bolt, providing a devicewhi'c'h Wlll automatically lock the bolt againstwlth drawal from the casing upon lnsertlon therein.- A suitablehandleQO is secured to the free end of the'catch S for disengaging the catch 8 from the locking bolt when desired.
A substantially L-shaped rod 21' extends through the door 2 and has one ofit'snrinportions secured to the catch 8 and' has mounted auponthe free end of the 'otherarnr portion a-handleQQ, Wherehy upon pushing" on the handle 22, the CZliJClLShlitffbfi disengaged from the locking-bolt l0 fro'tnthe oppositeside of the door frolnwhich the deiice is applied so that a person may manipulate this-device from either side 01 the'doo'rs- While E- have shown and described the preferred embodiment of any invention; it Willbe understood that minor changes in' construction, combination andarrangenient ofparts nlay lbe made witheut departing from the spiritandscope ofthe invention asclanned.
Having thus ClGSCl'ilJGLllD) invention, What I cla-i n is 1. A lockcoinprisingacasing a bolt ex-- tending into-said casing, a catch pivoted Within the casing, a plate secured to the piv-- oted end of the catch, a spring cennected'to said plate a transverse strip secured to the reusing; and to theispringq'for causing the spring to urge the free end of the catch into en gageinentavlth the bolt.
2. A lock con'iprisi'ng a casing consisting ofa bottom Wall and a pair of side Walls,
said side Walls having their forward ends IlllClll'lEClwfI'ODl a point intermediate their ends in the'direction of their forward ends, a lockingbolt: received between the side Walls and overlying the bottom Wall and having its forward end projectin-g beyond the walls, a lug-formed on the forward end of said bolt, a'catch pivoted between the sidewalls at a point adjacent the rearend,
