WILLIAM G. HALL, OF SPRAY, NORTH CAROLINA.
' cream.
Application filed January 29, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM G. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spray, in the county of Rockingham, State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is an improvement in chairs and has particular reference to a bracing device therefor.
An object of the invention is the provision of a bracing device for the legs of a chair which will effectively prevent the same from spreading, and to this end, use is made of a plurality of rods having their ends secured to the legs of the chair and their intermediate portions clamped together in a novel manner.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the chair showing the bracing device applied thereto.
Fig. '2 is a top plan view of the b acing device.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4c is a perspective view of one of the bracing rods.
Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, the numeral 5 indicates a chair of any construction having the usual legs 6.
The bracing device which comprises the essential feature of the invention is shown in what is now believed to be its preferred form and comprises a plurality of bracing rods 7, each of which is V-shaped in formation and provided at its ends with eyes 8 for receiv- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing suitable fasteners whereby the rod is secured to the upper and lower ends of one of the legs of the chair. Four of these rods comprise the device, one for each leg of the chair, and all of said rods are arranged so as to converge with their intermediate or bent portions 9 in abutting relation, the rods secured to diagonally opposite legs of the chair being in the same vertical plane while the other two rods are in a vertical plane at right angles to the first named plane.
A clamp is employed for securing the intermdiate portions 9 of the rods together and preferably comprises a pair of vertically arranged plates 10 having the intermediate portions of their inner opposed faces provided with grooves 11 which cooperate to form an opening for receiving the portions 9 of said rods. The plates 10 are so arranged that the vertical plane of one pair'of oppositely opposed rods is at right angles to the planes of said plates while the vertical plane of the other pair of rods is parallel with the planes of said plates.
The clamping plates 10 are secured together by screws 12 mounted in each end thereof and having nuts 13 threaded thereon. From this description it will be apparent that the bracing device may be readily and quickly secured to the legs of a chair and mounted in proper position.
lVhat is claimed is:--
1. A bracing device for chairs comprising a plurality of bracing rods having their ends secured to the legs of the chair and their intermediate portions arranged in juxtaposition, and vertically arranged clamping plates having their inner opposed faces provided with grooves to form an opening for receiving said intermediate portions of the rods. certain of said rods extending at right angles to the plane of said plates, the other rods being parallel to the planes thereof.
2. A bracing device for chairs including a plurality of substantially V-shaped rods having their ends secured to the legs of a chair, each rod extending inwardly at right angles to the next adjacent rod and said rods having their intermediate portions arranged in juxtaposition, and vertically arranged clamping plates having their inner opposed In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, faces provnled wlth grooves for formlng an m the presence of two wltnesses. opemng t0 recelve salcl lntermedlate portions of the rods, certain of said rodsextend- WILLIAM G. Gopies oi this patent may he obtained. for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner ef Patents, Washington, 11 t3.
